Ethan almost didn’t go.
He stood in the bathroom longer than he needed to, messing with his collar, telling himself the party was a waste of time. Then he went. He’d sat behind Madison Blake in two classes and never gotten past hello. That was starting to feel stupid even to him.
East quad was loud. Lights over the pool. Bartender who didn’t care about IDs if he knew the last name. Kids in clothes that never went on sale.
Madison was near the deep end with a drink she hadn’t touched. Hair off her face. Looked like she could leave any second.
He walked over before he could talk himself out of it.
"Madison. Hey. Didn’t know if you’d be out here."
She turned, took a second. "Ethan, right? Didn’t think this was your thing. Everyone here’s been saying the same stuff since we got here."
"It’s not. I just—wanted to talk without yelling over a lecture. Sounded better in my head."
Half a smile. "At least you’re honest. What did you want to talk about? If you came over to say the music’s loud, I already know."
He almost got the next line out.
Ryan Mitchell came around the pool with two guys and a girl on his arm. Talked like the night was for him.
"Sterling. Didn’t know Veronica let you out after dark. Figured she had you on a schedule."
A few people turned. The way they do when something’s about to go wrong.
Ethan looked at him. "Didn’t realize I needed your permission."
"You need it for most things." Ryan stopped close so everyone could hear. "Tuition. The house. That car you drive like it’s yours. Still trying to figure out the arrangement. She feels bad about your mom so she keeps a spare kid around? Or is it easier than writing a check?"
Madison’s drink shifted. She didn’t laugh. Didn’t tell him to shut up either.
Someone behind Ryan made a noise that wanted to be a laugh.
Ethan let it sit. Rushing only made it worse. "If you’re asking if she pays my bills, she does. If you’re asking if that’s your business, it isn’t."
"It is when you walk up to Madison like you’re in the same group." Ryan glanced at her, still smiling. "She’s not wasting a night on the guy in his dead mother’s friend’s guest room. That’s not mysterious. That’s a pity story with better lights."
Madison exhaled. "Ryan, can you not? You don’t need an audience for every sentence."
"What? I’m saving her the awkward part." He clapped Ethan’s shoulder hard enough to look friendly. "Don’t take it personal. Some people get invited because they belong. Some people get invited because the hostess is rich and still feels responsible."
Madison looked at Ethan, and whatever had been open was already gone. "I should find Chloe. It was nice seeing you. I just don’t want to stand here and make this bigger."
Not mean. Just done.
She took the long way around the pool. The space filled with other people’s eyes.
Ethan could’ve said something sharp. Could’ve given Ryan the whole scene. He didn’t.
He fixed his shoulder and walked toward the gate.
The walk across campus was colder. He didn’t wait for a ride he couldn’t pay for. Phone stayed in his pocket.
Isabella would text if she noticed. Alexandra would ask questions. Veronica would hear it in his voice even if he said nothing.
He played the moment back once, then stopped.
Ryan wanted a reaction. Madison wanted distance. Everyone else wanted a story for tomorrow.
Fine. He could be the story for one night. He wasn’t staying the version they’d just agreed on.
Veronica had taken him in. Paid for the school that just laughed at him. He cared about her. About Alexandra and Isabella too.
Didn’t mean he planned to stay the boy in her house.
The Cole place sat behind old trees. Lights on downstairs. Her car in the drive. Isabella’s window dark.
He came in the side door and took the stairs without slowing down.
Radio on low in the kitchen. Veronica’s voice somewhere near the front, ordinary, like someone who’d never had to leave a party because someone decided she didn’t belong.
His room still looked like a guest room. Bed. Desk he barely used. Clothes she’d bought because his own were starting to look bad.
He sat on the edge of the mattress and stared at the window.
Nineteen. Broke. Grades in the dirt. Living in a house that wasn’t his.
Mocked in front of a girl he actually wanted, and he’d stood there and taken it because making it louder only proved Ryan right.
He wasn’t staying that version of himself.
Something cold slid in behind his eyes. Not a headache. Not panic.
The air in front of him thinned. Pale text wrote itself into the dark.
[Conquest System Activated]
Ethan shoved back so hard the mattress complained.
"What the fuck is that supposed to be?"
On his feet before he finished the sentence. The letters stayed there, hanging over the bed.
He looked at the door, the window, the light again, waiting for it to blink out.
"No. That’s not real. I’m not standing here talking to a floating screen after getting laughed off a patio." He dragged a hand down his face. "That’s not happening."
Nobody downstairs reacted. The house made the same quiet sounds it always made.
He stepped in and pushed his fingers through the words. They should’ve broken. Should’ve been a trick of being tired and pissed off.
His hand went through light that shouldn’t have been there. The text got brighter.
"What the fuck is this? If this is a joke, it’s a very specific one."
[Host Recognized: Ethan Sterling]
[Age: 19]
[Status: Dependent / Overlooked / Ambition Detected]
He laughed once, sharp. "Dependent. Yeah. You needed a floating billboard for that? Could’ve saved you the trouble."
Another layer opened under the first.
[Primary Directive: Acquire power, resources, influence, and conquest.]
[Currency: Conquest Points (CP)]
[Current CP: 0]
[System Level: 1]
[Abilities: None]
He stared at the zero until it stopped looking like a joke.
No gift. No free skill. A system that showed up after the worst night of the semester and still wanted him to pay.
"Of course. Even the hallucination wants money. That tracks."
The humiliation from the pool was still there, but it had somewhere to go now.
Another window opened.
[New Quest: Stand Up Without Help]
[Objective: Secure a private conversation with Madison Blake after the party, or obtain your first independent source of money.]
[Reward: 300 CP]
[Bonus: +100 CP if the Cole household never hears the full story of tonight.]
[Failure: The System does not pity you.]
He read it twice.
Madison or money. Both, if he was careful. Bonus for keeping Veronica out of it.
That last part landed. Not because he was ashamed. Because the house was leverage, and leverage got weaker when people felt sorry for him.
He reached for a shop, a skill, anything he could use tonight.
Nothing.
[Notice: Skills must be purchased.]
[Notice: Conquest Points are earned, not given.]
[Notice: The world will not hand you anything.]
[Take it.]
"Yeah," he said, quieter. "I got that part. Didn’t have to write it out like I was slow."
A car door shut in the driveway.
Veronica’s voice came up the stairs a second later, asking if someone had eaten. Ordinary. Close enough he shut the windows with a thought before she could knock.
The room went back to being a room. His hands were still shaking.
The ceiling looked the same as an hour ago.
He didn’t.
Ryan thought he was a charity case. Madison had already written him off.
They were both going to be wrong.
And the first person who found out wasn’t going to be either of them.
