He sent the File Street notes before midnight and then left his phone face-down so he would not watch it.

Sophia answered at 7:12 in the morning.

Dishwasher and the wall are the paragraphs that mattered. Offer goes in Monday. If it lands, you walk the inspection with me. If you text me anything else this weekend, I will assume Friday got misunderstood.Full novel: The Milf Conqueror — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

That was all.

Ethan read it twice, smiled at the ceiling, and did not text her back.

Saturday in the Cole house had a different weight than the last one.

Alexandra made too much breakfast again and watched him eat it like she could catch the week in his face. Isabella came down late, stole bacon, and said Chloe had asked whether Ethan Sterling was suddenly friends with Madison Blake or just using her hallway.

"I told her I didn’t know," Isabella said, not looking as casual as the sentence wanted. "Which is a lie. I know you. I just don’t have the version I can say at a table."

"You don’t need a version."

"Yes I do. Mom is already in a mood, and you keep coming home like you left part of the day in somebody else’s room."

Veronica walked in on the end of that and did not ask Isabella to repeat it. She poured coffee, told Alexandra the eggs were fine, and told Ethan she needed him to help her bring boxes down from the office later because she was not asking the girls to wreck their Saturday for storage.

It sounded like chores.

It felt like she wanted him in a room with a door.

Campus took the middle of the day. Madison found him outside the library without pretending it was an accident.

"You didn’t come by," she said.

"You told me not to."

"I know what I told you." She adjusted the strap of her bag and looked past him at a group that might have included Ryan if either of them wanted it to. "Chloe asked me last night if I was sleeping with you. I told her to mind her apartment. That is not the same thing as me knowing what we are doing."

"We don’t have to name it on the library steps."

Madison’s mouth tightened. Aftertaste had faded. Hunger had not. "You smell different. I noticed it yesterday and I noticed it now, and I hate that I noticed it. If that is cologne, buy a less obvious one."

"It isn’t cologne."

She stared at him, then shook her head and walked into the library before the conversation could become another locked door she had not planned.

Ryan passed him ten minutes later and did not make a joke. That was new. He only looked at Ethan like the story had changed shape and he had not found the handle yet.

[Not urgent. Not gone.]

Evening pulled the house inward.

Alexandra went out. Isabella shut herself in her room with headphones. Veronica called Ethan into the upstairs office with two boxes that did not need two people.

The office smelled like paper and her perfume and, now, him. Wanted Scent did not know how to be polite in a closed room. It sat in the air between the desk and the window and made the chore feel like a pretext.

Veronica noticed. He watched her notice.

"Open that one," she said. "Tax files. I need last year’s closer to the cabinet, not in a pile where I trip on them."

They worked for a few minutes without talking. Her sleeve kept brushing his when they both reached into the same box. She stopped reaching at the same time he did, then started again as if the pause had been about the files.

"Sophia did not call me," Veronica said eventually. "I kept waiting for it. That should have been a relief."

"The notes were clean. There was nothing to call you about."

"There is always something to call me about with you lately." She straightened, close enough that he could see the fatigue she did not wear in the kitchen. Forty-two. Strict. Still the woman who had taken him in. "You smell like her house. Or like you. I cannot tell which, and I do not like not being able to tell."

"I’m not wearing anything."

Veronica looked at his throat. Then at his mouth. Then at the box as if it could save the moment.

"I chose not to ask you a question last night," she said. "I am still choosing not to. If you make me ask it, I am going to hate both of us for the answer."

"Then don’t ask it."

"That is not as helpful as you think it is."

She moved past him to the cabinet. The space was too narrow. Her chest crossed his arm. Her hand landed on his wrist to steady herself, automatic, the kind of touch that had been allowed in this house for years.

Wicked Fingers II did not care that it had been allowed.

The skill took her wrist and traveled. Up. In. The path he had bought for Sophia found Veronica instead, because she had put her hand there.

Veronica stopped breathing for a second.

Echo Touch came after, cruel in its timing. She felt him when he was already only standing there.

Her fingers tightened on his wrist instead of letting go.

"Ethan." His name came out low, stripped of the hallway voice. "Tell me that was nothing."

"If I tell you that, I will be lying to you in your own office."

She looked up at him. For a second the strictness cracked all the way through and what was under it was not a rule. It was want she had not given herself permission to have, and care she had been using as a cover.

She kissed him.

It was not a long kiss. It was not a clean one either. Her mouth on his was shock and then hunger and then the kind of sound she would hate herself for making. His hand found her waist because there was nowhere else honest to put it. Wanted Scent and the closed office and ten years of living in her house sat in that one contact until she broke it.

Veronica stepped back so fast she hit the cabinet.

Her mouth was pink. Her breathing was wrong. She looked at him like he had taken something and like she had handed it over.

"That did not happen," she said. "Do you understand me? That did not happen. You are going to take that box downstairs and you are going to go to your room, and we are not going to stand here and turn my office into a confession."

"I understand what you need me to do."

"That is not the same as understanding me." Her hand hovered at her lips and then dropped. The strictness came back in pieces, not all at once. "Sophia is work. Madison Blake is a girl from school. I am the woman who put you in this house. Do not confuse those three things because your week has been loud."

She opened the office door herself.

"Go."

Ethan picked up the box.

In the hall, Isabella’s music leaked under her door. Alexandra’s car was still gone. The house did not know.

He took the box downstairs and did not go back up to the office.

In his room the shop tried to open. He shut it. He did not need a new skill for what had just happened. He needed to sit with the fact that Veronica Cole had kissed him and then ordered him to pretend she hadn’t.

Ethan touched his mouth once, then dropped his hand.

He could do that for her.

He could also wait, the same way he was waiting on Sophia, and let the lie do the work.
