The inspection text came through while Ethan was still on campus.

File Street. Tomorrow, 9:40. Inspector will be late if the last job runs. You will not be late. If the offer landed, you already know. If you need the number said out loud, it is twelve hundred for the week and I do not negotiate that in a hallway.

Not mixer cash. Not Veronica’s envelope. A week of his name on work Sophia Bennett was willing to put a number on.

He read it twice and put the phone away before Madison could see his face do anything worth commenting on. She was already watching him from the other side of the union steps like the new jawline was a personal insult she had not agreed to.

"You look like you just got good news and you are trying not to spend it in public," she said. "If that good news is about me, I am going to be annoyed. If it is about work, I am going to be annoyed in a different way, because you keep getting taller in rooms I have to walk through."

"It is work. I am not putting it on these steps."

Madison’s mouth tightened. "Then do not stand there smelling like you already left. Chloe asked me again last night. I told her to drop it. That lie is getting more expensive every time I use it."

She went around him. She did not ask him to follow.

Veronica found out the number before he had decided how to say it.

She was in the kitchen when he came in, laptop open, a checkbook he had not seen her use in months sitting near the fruit bowl like a warning. Alexandra was gone. Isabella was on the stairs listening and pretending she was looking for shoes.

"Sophia emailed me a courtesy copy of the inspection schedule," Veronica said, without looking up at first. "She did not have to. She did it because she knows this house, and because she wanted me to hear the number from paper instead of from you after the fact."

Ethan set his bag down. "Twelve hundred for the week. I was going to tell you at dinner."

"You were going to tell me after you had already decided it was yours." She closed the laptop and finally looked at him. The office was still in her face, sealed under the same finished expression she had worn at breakfast. "I have a check here for books and food through the month. You may take it. You may also tell me you do not need it. What you may not do is stand in my kitchen and act like refusing my money is a speech."

Isabella came the rest of the way down because subtlety had never been her gift. "He is about to refuse it. I can hear it from the stairs. Please do it in a way that does not make her go into the office and stay there until midnight."

"Go find your shoes," Veronica said.

"They are on my feet."

"Then go wear them somewhere else."

Isabella looked at Ethan, then at Veronica, then left them the kitchen because even she could tell this one was not for an audience.

Veronica slid the check an inch toward him and left it there.

"I am not punishing you," she said. "I am keeping this house from turning into a story where I threw you out to prove a point. If you do not need it, say that and I will put it away. If you take it, I will not call it a leash. I would like, for once, a clean sentence."

Ethan did not pick up the check.

"I do not need it this month. I have the inspection and I have the week. If that falls apart, I will come back and say so. I am not going to take your money so this kitchen feels normal."

Veronica’s hand stayed on the counter beside the paper. For a second the crack from the office showed through, the part of her that wanted him fed and close and still a boy she could account for. Then she put the check back in the book and shut it.

"All right. Then you will eat what is in this house and you will tell me if File Street goes badly. I am not interested in finding that out from Sophia a second time."

"I can do that."

She looked at his face the way she had the night before, too long, then turned back to the laptop like the look had been about the schedule.

File Street the next morning smelled like open windows and old paint.

The inspector was a man in his fifties with a tablet and no interest in anyone’s week. Sophia arrived four minutes after Ethan, coat on, coffee in one hand, already talking to the inspector like they had done this in three other cities.

She looked at Ethan once, registered the face, and did not comment on it in front of the other man.

"You are here to listen and to confirm what you already wrote," she said. "If he finds the dishwasher, you do not look surprised. If he finds something you missed, you say so before I have to."

"I wasn’t planning on performing."

"Good. I have already had a morning full of people performing."

They walked the house. The inspector found the soft floor. He found the lazy wall. He found a junction box in the basement Ethan had noted and a cracked flue cap Ethan had not. Ethan said so before Sophia asked.

Outside on the porch, the inspector left first. Sophia stayed with her coffee and the clipboard she did not need.

"Twelve hundred hits your account today," she said. "I sent it before I parked. If you were waiting for me to make a ceremony out of it, you came to the wrong job."

"I wasn’t waiting for a ceremony. I refused a check this morning because of that number."

Sophia studied him over the cup. The new face sat in daylight now. She did not pretend she had not noticed.

"Veronica told me you would do that. She did not tell me it would sound like pride. She made it sound like manners." Sophia stepped closer to look at a porch board that did not matter. Wanted Scent was in the cool morning air whether he asked it to be or not. "You look different. I am not going to ask what you spent money on. I am going to tell you that a face like that makes donors talk faster, and Ryan Mitchell’s people already have my name in their mouths."

"He said that yesterday."

"Then he is not as stupid as he looks." She lowered the cup. "There is a second property on Reeve this afternoon if you want the rest of the week to be real. Empty. No inspector. I need eyes, not a performance. If you come, you come to work. If Friday is still sitting in that back bedroom, leave it in the back bedroom."

Ethan met her eyes and did not dress it up. "I’ll come to work."

Sophia’s mouth moved like she almost believed him.

"Reeve at two," she said. "Do not be late, and do not wear whatever you wore to that mixer. I am not walking an empty building with a boy who still looks like he is passing drinks."

She went to her car without asking him to walk her.

Ethan stood on the File Street porch with money in an account that was his and a second empty building waiting.

Reeve at two was supposed to be eyes on a property.

He was already thinking about the closed rooms on the second floor, and about whether Sophia Bennett would keep calling it work once there was no inspector left to hear them.
