Chapter Twenty Four
Cassian Valmont.
Cassian wasn’t foolish…or at least not by a long shot.
He had merely changed floors when he jumped but seeing the look of panic and dread in their faces had been the best.
It was not as if he was about to start being a martyr all of a sudden.
Shaking his head as he stood beside the window he had just landed into after he made that jump and looked down.
The Hall Of Ascension might have not been too far from the ground but he wasn’t about to start getting suicidal by trying to see if he could survive a trip down to the ground.
He turned away from it and began to make his way out of the castle, not lingering any further to pacify the people still standing above that window he had jumped from who kept calling out his name.
They could all go to hell.
The voices from above continued to reach his ears.
“Cassian!”
“Third Young Master!”
“Wait!”
“Don’t jump!”
Cassian rolled his eyes at that last bit.
<Too late for that, isn’t it?>
He had already landed safely and honestly, these people were too dramatic.
He had simply jumped through a window, not declared war on the kingdom.
He glanced over his shoulder one last time before shaking his head.
<And they call themselves the royal family and the ministers?>
<How easily frightened.>
If he had truly wanted to die, he wouldn’t have gone through all that trouble just to get a second chance at life.
He had already experienced death once before and he had no intention of meeting it again anytime soon, at least not until he had finished everything he needed to do.
And certainly not because some people in a throne room were screaming his name as though he had just thrown himself off the highest tower in the kingdom.
<Idiots.>
A few guards who were tasked with guarding this part of the castle rushed over to him as soon as they heard the noise and when they saw that it was just him, they all began to make way.
But one in particular had to stop and question him and Cassian realized that it was their head.
“Young Master, is there any reason why you made use of the window instead of the door?”
He went straight to the point and asked and Cassian raised an eyebrow with a small smirk as he silently commended the man for being a little bit smart.
So he should know that there had to be something happening that caused the sudden change.
“The doors leading to the throne room was sealed and I didn’t want to wait for it to be discovered by others and then opened.”
He simply explained as he walked past the man and continued on his way but the man’s eyes widened as he once again asked another question.
“Why is it locked?”
“Why don’t you find that out by yourself and leave me be?”
Cassian turned his head while walking and cocked an eyebrow at him in question before turning his head back around.
The castle guard remained where he stood for a few seconds, watching Cassian’s retreating back.
There was something about the Young Master that felt different to him today and it definitely wasn’t just the fact that he had appeared from a window instead of the usual entrance.
It was the way he had answered.
He held no panic or concern about what had happened inside the Hall Of Ascension and it was almost as though he had already known that something would happen today.
The guard’s brows furrowed as he glanced toward the direction of the throne room before looking back at the disappearing figure.
Something had definitely happened inside that hall but whatever it was…it clearly wasn’t something Cassian Valmont intended to explain to him just because he asked.
“How strange…”
He muttered beneath his breath before quickly turning around.
“Go find out what happened!”
The guards around him immediately moved.
Cassian smirked when he heard all that but didn’t wait to listen to another word from the man as he quickly left the castle and stepped out towards the roads that led to the public entrance and sighed.
He didn’t understand it.
Why did the king make an order that none of their carriages were to be seen inside the castle?
It was not as if the ministers would start bringing war explosives to destroy the castle!
Now someone had to walk this far road just to get back to the entrance and leave in their carriages.
Shaking his head as he continued walking, his mind quietly took him back to his current situation and plans.
He was headed somewhere right this movement and this place he was going to was not going to be free of bloodshed no matter what decisions he made when he got there.
It didn’t take too long for his long legs to take him straight to the public entrance but he was already sweating slightly due to the harsh sun and due to the lengthy trek he had just made.
Cassian wiped the small layer of sweat that had formed around his forehead and clicked his tongue.
<This is ridiculous.>
<I’m supposed to be a noble so why am I walking around under this hot sun like some fucking commoner?>
The guards at the gates each smiled when they saw him and cleared the way for him without question and he nodded in response, too tired to even speak as his eyes immediately searched for his carriage.
There.
Finally.!
He could already imagine himself sitting comfortably inside with the curtains drawn while someone else suffered beneath the heat to take him wherever he wanted to go.
That was more like it.
<Much better.>
His steps became slightly faster for he knew that he had already spent enough time inside that castle for one day.
He had witnessed the report on the Crown Prince’s kidnapping, watched assassins invade the Hall Of Ascension, he even helped kill four of them after watching the king almost get killed.
He even negotiated his payment in the middle of a massacre and now…he simply had to go somewhere else.
<What a busy day for him and it’s wasn’t even over yet.>
“Let’s go,”
He called out to the boy who was almost napping by the carriage and he instantly jumped in fright at the sound but when he saw who it was, he somehow brightened and also darkened at the same time.
Cassian paid him no attention, simply patting his back as he got into the carriage and the boy beamed before climbing up to sit in the front.
“Where to, Young Master?”
He asked and there was a small pause from the inside of the carriage before Cassian finally responded.
“Take me to Dorkshire Coliseum as quick as you can.”
The moment the words left Cassian’s mouth, the boy’s expression changed.
Dorkshire Coliseum?
That wasn’t exactly somewhere ordinary nobles went for an afternoon stroll and it was one of the busiest and most dangerous places in the capital.
Anything from fights to gambling to illegal dealings to mercenaries to slaves and to weapons were found there and all sorts of people who preferred to conduct their business away from the eyes of the royal court.
The boy swallowed at that but he didn’t ask any questions.
He had already learned that asking too many questions around the Young Master usually resulted in answers he wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Yes, Young Master.”
The boy said nothing to that, his face a mask of pure determination as he leaned backwards and swiped the whip onto the horses.
A neigh filled the air as the horses jumped before they all began to move, easily pulling out of the castle and taking them down the path that led out of the royal grounds.
Within the carriage, Cassian stared at his hand as he sat there, mind as blank as a white canvas as if he was in a trance, eyes seeing but also unseeing at the same time.
The jostling of the carriage broke him out of that trance as they forged forward and he sighed to himself before taking a hand down his face while blinking a memory away from his mind.
His fingers slowly curled into a fist as that familiar feeling had begun to settle inside his chest again.
He hated it, he hated the way certain memories could still sneak up on him when he least expected them.
He had spent some time since he came back trying to bury them and trying to convince himself that everything that happened in his previous life had already ended.
That it no longer mattered and that none of those people mattered anymore and yet…there were some memories that refused to die.
Some faces that remained engraved into his mind no matter how hard he tried to forget them.
His hand slowly loosened.
No, he couldn’t afford to think about that now and especially not her.
Not when he was already on his way to the place where everything would start to change for good after what he planned came together.
This life…he refused to associate with her in any way whatsoever…this way, she wouldn’t suffer any pain at all from his actions.
