The door opened another inch.

Margaret gripped Ethan’s arm so tightly that her fingernails dug into his skin.

“Don’t look at him,” she whispered.Full novel: The Name Beneath the Name — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Ethan stared at the widening darkness.

“Why?”

“Because he’ll know you’re afraid.”

“I am not afraid.”

Margaret looked at him sadly.

“You should be.”

The door opened completely.

An elderly man stood in the doorway.

He wore a charcoal suit, a white shirt, and no tie.

His silver hair was perfectly combed.

His posture was straight despite his age.

He carried no weapon.

He didn’t need one.

His eyes moved slowly around the room before settling on Margaret.

Then Ethan.

Then Clara.

A faint smile appeared.

“Nathaniel.”

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

He had spent his entire life being called Ethan.

Yet every stranger who knew the truth called him Nathaniel.

The old man stepped inside.

“You look exactly like your father.”

Ethan’s voice hardened.

“Who are you?”

The old man smiled.

“Your grandfather.”

Margaret moved between them.

“Stay away from him.”

The old man laughed softly.

“You’ve been saying that for twenty-seven years.”

Ethan looked at his mother.

“You never told me his name.”

Margaret didn’t answer.

The old man did.

“Edmund Vale.”

The name meant nothing to Ethan.

But Clara noticed the reaction in Margaret’s face.

“You know him,” Clara said.

Edmund looked at her.

“I know everyone who matters.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

His smile widened.

“You have your mother’s courage.”

Clara stiffened.

“My mother?”

Edmund nodded.

“Margaret’s mother.”

He looked at Margaret.

“She was a remarkable woman.”

Margaret’s voice shook.

“You killed her.”

Edmund’s expression barely changed.

“She made unfortunate decisions.”

“You murdered her.”

“I removed an obstacle.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Edmund looked at him.

“Good.”

“What?”

“You finally sound like a Vale.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“You’ve been controlling Richard.”

“Controlling?”

Edmund smiled.

“No.”

He walked toward the table.

“I gave him direction.”

“You destroyed my family.”

Edmund looked at him.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

“You kept my mother imprisoned.”

“I kept her alive.”

“You killed people.”

“I prevented wars.”

Clara shook her head.

“That’s what monsters always say.”

Edmund looked at her.

“Do you know what separates a monster from a respectable man?”

“No.”

“Money.”

Silence.

Edmund picked up the black ledger.

“This is why Richard could never truly control you.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because your mother left you something far more valuable than money.”

Edmund opened the ledger.

“Proof.”

He turned several pages.

Then stopped.

“Your mother documented everything.”

Margaret’s face tightened.

“I thought Richard destroyed it.”

“He tried.”

Edmund smiled.

“He wasn’t clever enough.”

Ethan stepped toward the ledger.

“What happened the night I was born?”

Edmund closed it.

“That’s a long story.”

“Then start talking.”

Edmund looked amused.

“You think you can command me?”

“I think you owe me the truth.”

“No.”

Edmund stepped closer.

“I owe you nothing.”

“I’m your grandson.”

“That is precisely why I owe you nothing.”

Ethan frowned.

Edmund’s eyes became colder.

“You are not my heir.”

“Then who is?”

Edmund looked toward Margaret.

“She knows.”

Ethan turned.

“Mom?”

Margaret looked down.

“Your father.”

Ethan’s heart stopped.

“Gabriel?”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Edmund.

“Your real father.”

Ethan stared.

“Who?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

Edmund answered for her.

“My son.”

Clara’s eyes widened.

“Gabriel?”

Edmund shook his head.

“Gabriel was Margaret’s first love.”

He looked at Ethan.

“But he wasn’t your father.”

Ethan felt as though the floor had shifted beneath him.

“Then who?”

Edmund’s voice became almost gentle.

“Daniel Vale.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“My eldest son.”

“I have another father?”

“You had one.”

“What happened to him?”

Edmund’s expression hardened.

“He died.”

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

“How?”

Edmund looked toward Margaret.

“Ask her.”

Ethan turned.

Margaret couldn’t meet his eyes.

“Mom.”

She said nothing.

“Mom, look at me.”

Slowly, she did.

“What happened to Daniel?”

Margaret’s lips trembled.

“Richard killed him.”

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel knew what Richard had done.”

“What had he done?”

Margaret swallowed.

“He had stolen the company.”

Ethan looked at Edmund.

“You said my mother built Calloway Holdings.”

“She did.”

“And Daniel owned part of it?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Richard get everything?”

Edmund smiled bitterly.

“Because Richard married your mother.”

Clara’s expression changed.

“And then?”

“He murdered Daniel.”

Margaret spoke quietly.

“He made it look like an accident.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you married him anyway?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

“I had three children.”

Her voice broke.

“Alexander was six.

You weren’t born yet.

Evelyn was four.”

She wiped her face.

“Richard told me that if I went to the police, all three of you would disappear.”

Ethan stepped back.

“So you stayed.”

“Yes.”

“To protect us.”

“Yes.”

“But Richard took me anyway.”

Margaret nodded.

“He took you because he discovered something.”

“What?”

“That Daniel left you his shares.”

Ethan stared.

“Shares?”

“Control of the company.”

Edmund corrected her.

“Control of the family trust.”

Ethan’s mind raced.

“How much?”

“Enough to destroy Richard.”

Clara understood first.

“That’s why he needed Ethan.”

Edmund nodded.

“Richard could control the company while Ethan was a child.”

“But when Ethan turned twenty-five…”

Margaret nodded.

“The trust would activate.”

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“When I turned twenty-five…”

“You became the legal owner.”

Clara looked at him.

“But Richard still controlled everything.”

“Because Richard forged your signature.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“He stole my inheritance.”

“He stole your entire life.”

Edmund placed the ledger on the table.

“And that’s why you’re dangerous now.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because the trust has finally been triggered.”

Ethan’s breathing stopped.

“Triggered?”

Edmund nodded.

“You are now the legal owner of Calloway Holdings.”

Silence.

Clara looked at Ethan.

“But Richard—”

“Richard owns nothing.”

Edmund smiled.

“He merely sits in the chair.”

Ethan looked toward the ledger.

“How do I take control?”

“You don’t.”

Edmund closed the ledger.

“I do.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“So that’s why you’ve been waiting.”

“Of course.”

“You want the company.”

“No.”

Edmund’s expression became strangely calm.

“I want what your mother hid inside it.”

“What?”

“A record.”

“What record?”

“The original shareholder registry.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why does that matter?”

“Because it contains a name.”

“Whose?”

Edmund looked toward Margaret.

“Your grandmother.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Why does her name matter?”

“Because she didn’t die.”

Margaret’s eyes widened.

“Edmund.”

He ignored her.

“She disappeared.”

Clara stared.

“Where?”

Edmund looked at Ethan.

“That’s the secret Richard spent twenty-seven years protecting.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Tell me.”

Edmund smiled.

“You’ll find her where Daniel died.”

“Where?”

“Under the old Calloway factory.”

Ethan stared.

“Why?”

“Because your father didn’t die in an accident.”

Margaret began crying.

“Daniel was murdered.”

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

“By Richard?”

“No.”

Ethan froze.

“Then who?”

Edmund’s eyes darkened.

“Your mother.”

Silence.

Clara looked at Margaret.

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

Edmund smiled.

“She pulled the trigger.”

Ethan stared at his mother.

“Is that true?”

Margaret couldn’t answer.

“Mom.”

Her shoulders began shaking.

“Is it true?”

“I…”

She covered her face.

Ethan stepped backward.

“No.”

“I didn’t mean to.”

“You killed my father?”

“I was protecting you.”

“You killed Daniel?”

“He was already dying.”

“What does that mean?”

“He was poisoned.”

Ethan stared.

“By whom?”

Margaret looked toward Edmund.

Her eyes filled with terror.

“By him.”

Edmund smiled.

“I gave Daniel a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Join me.”

“And he refused.”

“Yes.”

“So you poisoned him.”

“Yes.”

Ethan’s voice trembled.

“And my mother shot him?”

“To end his suffering.”

Margaret whispered:

“He begged me.”

The room went silent.

Ethan looked away.

For years, he had imagined his mother as a victim.

Now he didn’t know what she was.

Victim.

Killer.

Prisoner.

Liar.

Perhaps all four.

Clara moved toward him.

He didn’t notice.

Edmund picked up the ledger.

“You see the problem, Nathaniel?”

Ethan looked at him.

“You’re surrounded by people who lied to you.”

“You included.”

“Especially me.”

Edmund smiled.

“But I’m the only one telling you when I’m lying.”

Before Ethan could respond, a gunshot exploded outside.

Margaret screamed.

Clara ducked.

Ethan pulled her down.

Another shot.

Then another.

Edmund remained standing.

Calm.

Unmoved.

Ethan looked at him.

“Who is shooting?”

Edmund’s smile disappeared.

“Richard.”

“But he’s gone.”

“No.”

Edmund looked toward the door.

“He isn’t running.”

Another gunshot.

Edmund’s eyes hardened.

“He’s coming for you.”

The hidden door suddenly burst open.

Richard appeared with a gun in his hand.

Blood covered one side of his face.

His eyes were no longer calm.

They were wild.

“You.”

Richard pointed the gun at Edmund.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Edmund smiled.

“And you should have stayed obedient.”

Richard’s finger tightened around the trigger.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Stop!”

Richard’s gun shifted toward him.

“Move.”

“No.”

Richard’s eyes filled with rage.

“You have no idea what that man is.”

Ethan looked at Edmund.

“Apparently neither do I.”

Richard laughed.

“He murdered your father.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“And you didn’t?”

Richard’s expression changed.

Edmund watched silently.

Richard looked at Margaret.

“She told you?”

“Yes.”

Richard shook his head.

“She doesn’t know the whole story.”

Margaret whispered:

“Don’t.”

Richard pointed the gun at her.

“You should have told him.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Told me what?”

Richard looked directly at him.

“The reason your mother killed Daniel.”

Silence.

Richard smiled.

“Because Daniel wasn’t your father.”

Ethan froze.

Richard’s voice dropped.

“Daniel was your uncle.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Clara stared at Ethan.

Richard continued.

“Your real father is still alive.”

Then the lights went out.

And in the darkness, someone behind Clara whispered:

“Finally.”

A hand covered her mouth.

She was pulled backward.

Ethan heard her muffled scream.

“CLARA!”

When the lights returned— she was gone.
