The footsteps grew louder.
Not hurried.
Not chaotic.
Measured.
Hundreds of them.
Ethan stood in the center of Room Zero, staring at the open vault doors.
“Who is coming?”
Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at Lillian.
“Tell him.”
Lillian’s expression was grim.
“They’re the people who have protected the Vale inheritance for generations.”
Ethan frowned.
“Protectors?”
“No.”
Lillian looked toward the entrance.
“Witnesses.”
Another wave of footsteps echoed through the corridor.
Clara stepped closer to Ethan.
“What do they want?”
Evelyn answered this time.
“The truth.”
Edmund laughed.
“The truth?”
He raised his gun.
“You don’t even know what the truth is.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I know enough.”
“You know nothing.”
“I know you killed Daniel’s father.”
Edmund’s smile disappeared.
“I know you imprisoned Daniel.”
His jaw tightened.
“I know you erased Clara’s identity.”
Clara stared at him.
“And I know you tried to kill Lillian.”
Lillian’s expression hardened.
Edmund looked around.
“You’re all forgetting one thing.”
He pointed the gun toward Ethan.
“I still have a choice.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You don’t.”
Edmund smiled.
“Don’t I?”
He pressed a button on a small device.
The floor beneath Ethan lit up.
A red circle appeared around his feet.
Ethan looked down.
“What did you do?”
Edmund’s smile returned.
“I activated the blood protocol.”
Lillian’s eyes widened.
“No.”
“What?”
“Get out of the circle!”
Ethan tried.
He couldn’t move.
Something locked around his ankles.
Clara rushed toward him.
“Ethan!”
Lillian grabbed her.
“Don’t touch him!”
“Why?”
“The system will register you as a second sacrifice.”
Clara stopped.
Ethan looked at Edmund.
“What does the protocol do?”
Edmund answered calmly.
“It decides which heir survives.”
Silence.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“You’ve been planning this.”
“For twenty-seven years.”
The Witnesses
The footsteps stopped.
A group of people entered the chamber.
Men and women of different ages.
Some wore formal suits.
Others wore plain clothes.
Every one of them carried the same silver emblem.
The divided circle.
They formed a semicircle around Room Zero.
Ethan looked at them.
“Who are you?”
An elderly man stepped forward.
“I am Samuel Cross.”
He bowed slightly.
“Keeper of the Vale Trust.”
Another woman stepped forward.
“Rebecca Stone.
Keeper of the Hart records.”
A third.
“Marcus Bell.
Custodian of the original inheritance.”
One after another, they introduced themselves.
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
“How many of you are there?”
Samuel looked around.
“Thirty-seven.”
Clara whispered:
“They’ve been watching us.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Since birth.”
Ethan looked at Edmund.
“And you control them?”
Samuel shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Samuel continued:
“Edmund has never controlled the Trust.”
Edmund’s expression darkened.
“He’s lying.”
Samuel ignored him.
“The Trust has only one master.”
He looked at Ethan.
“The heirs.”
Ethan frowned.
“I don’t want it.”
Samuel smiled.
“That’s irrelevant.”
“Why?”
“Because the inheritance has already chosen.”
A low hum moved through the room.
The black ledger opened again.
Pages turned by themselves.
Then stopped.
Three names appeared.
NATHANIEL VALE.
CLARA HART.
LILLIAN VALE.
EVELYN VALE.
Ethan looked at Evelyn.
“Four heirs.”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
“But you said three.”
“I said three were recorded.”
He looked at Evelyn.
“The fourth was erased.”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“And now I’m back.”
Samuel bowed his head.
“Exactly.”
Margaret’s Confession
Margaret was still lying on the floor.
Ethan looked at her.
“Mom.”
She opened her eyes.
“Ethan.”
He crouched beside her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Edmund?”
“No.”
She looked toward the four women and men surrounding them.
“Of the Trust.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why?”
“Because once you know the truth, you can’t walk away.”
He looked at the ledger.
“I don’t want this.”
Margaret smiled weakly.
“You said that when you were ten.”
“What?”
“You found one of your grandfather’s financial ledgers.”
She coughed.
“You told me you didn’t want his money.”
Ethan remembered.
A faint memory.
Sitting beneath a desk.
His mother kneeling beside him.
Her telling him:
Money isn’t the inheritance.
He looked at her.
“What is the inheritance?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“Freedom.”
Ethan frowned.
“From what?”
Margaret whispered:
“The family.”
Silence.
She continued.
“Every generation of the Vale family was given wealth.”
She swallowed.
“And every generation was also given a prison.”
“What prison?”
“The obligation to protect the Trust.”
Ethan looked at Samuel.
“Protect it from what?”
Margaret answered:
“From the government.”
Clara stared.
“What?”
Margaret nodded.
“The Vale Trust was created during a time when the family controlled parts of international finance.”
Ethan frowned.
“So?”
“The Trust wasn’t simply an investment fund.”
“What was it?”
Margaret looked at him.
“A shadow government.”
The chamber went silent.
The Real Enemy
Ethan turned toward Edmund.
“You knew.”
Edmund laughed.
“Of course.”
“And you wanted control.”
“No.”
Edmund’s smile faded.
“I wanted to destroy it.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Edmund stepped forward.
“For twenty-seven years, everyone has believed I wanted the Vale inheritance.”
He shook his head.
“I wanted it dead.”
Samuel’s expression changed.
“You’re lying.”
Edmund looked at him.
“Am I?”
He pointed toward the black ledger.
“That thing destroyed my family.”
Lillian stepped forward.
“You destroyed your own family.”
“No.”
Edmund’s voice became bitter.
“The Trust did.”
He looked at Ethan.
“My father gave everything to the Vale family.”
“My mother.”
“My sister.”
“All of them.”
He swallowed.
“And when they tried to leave, the Trust wouldn’t let them.”
Ethan stared.
“Then why did you kill people?”
Edmund’s eyes hardened.
“Because I realized the only way to destroy the Trust…”
He looked at the four heirs.
“…was to destroy the bloodline that controlled it.”
Clara whispered:
“So all of this…”
“Was necessary.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You murdered innocent people.”
Edmund looked at her.
“No.”
His voice became cold.
“I murdered obstacles.”
Lillian shook her head.
“You’re insane.”
“Perhaps.”
Edmund smiled.
“But I’m almost finished.”
He pressed the device again.
The red circle around Ethan intensified.
Ethan gasped.
A sharp pain shot through his chest.
Clara screamed.
“Stop!”
Edmund looked at her.
“Then choose.”
“Which one dies.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
Edmund pointed toward Lillian.
“Her.”
Then Evelyn.
“Her.”
Then Clara.
“Her.”
Finally, Ethan.
“Or you.”
The room went silent.
Samuel looked horrified.
“Edmund, the protocol cannot be forced.”
Edmund smiled.
“It can.”
He looked at Ethan.
“The system only requires one willing sacrifice.”
Ethan stared at the three women.
“No.”
Clara stepped forward.
“Ethan, don’t.”
“I won’t let anyone die.”
Edmund laughed.
“Then everyone dies.”
The chamber lights flashed red.
SACRIFICE REQUIRED.
TIME REMAINING: 03:00
Ethan looked at the countdown.
Three minutes.
Clara took his hand.
“Don’t choose me.”
He looked at her.
“I’m not choosing anyone.”
“You have to.”
“No.”
She squeezed his hand.
“Ethan.”
“I said no.”
Then Lillian spoke.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
Lillian was staring at the black ledger.
Her face had changed.
“There is another clause.”
Samuel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Lillian opened the final page.
“There is.”
She read aloud:
WHEN FOUR HEIRS STAND TOGETHER, THE SACRIFICE SHALL BE TRANSFERRED TO THE CREATOR OF THE TEST.
Silence.
Ethan looked at Edmund.
Edmund’s face went white.
Lillian smiled.
“You made one mistake.”
Edmund slowly stepped backward.
“What?”
“You forgot…”
Lillian closed the ledger.
“…that there were four of us.”
The red circle beneath Ethan disappeared.
A new circle appeared beneath Edmund.
He looked down.
“No.”
The vault doors slammed shut.
The witnesses stepped back.
The system spoke.
CREATOR IDENTIFIED.
EDMUND VALE.
Edmund raised his gun.
“Stay back!”
Nobody moved.
His hands began trembling.
Ethan stepped forward.
“You wanted the inheritance.”
Edmund stared at him.
“You wanted the bloodline.”
Ethan continued.
“You wanted the test.”
The red circle beneath Edmund grew brighter.
“But you never understood the rules.”
Edmund’s eyes filled with rage.
“I wrote the rules.”
Lillian smiled.
“No.”
She pointed toward the black ledger.
“Your father did.”
The floor beneath Edmund opened.
He screamed.
Ethan rushed forward.
But Edmund vanished into the darkness.
The floor slammed shut.
Silence.
Then the black ledger closed.
The system spoke one final time.
TEST COMPLETE.
INHERITANCE TRANSFERRED.
Ethan looked at Clara.
“What happens now?”
Samuel stepped forward.
“The Vale Trust belongs to you.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Samuel frowned.
“I don’t want it.”
“You don’t have a choice.”
Ethan looked toward the sealed floor.
“Then maybe I do.”
He turned to the four heirs.
“Maybe we destroy it.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn smiled.
“Now you’re thinking like a Vale.”
Suddenly— the chamber lights went black.
A phone began ringing.
Everyone froze.
The sound came from beneath the floor.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
Then the call connected by itself.
A man’s voice whispered through the chamber.
“Congratulations, Ethan.”
Ethan’s blood turned cold.
The voice continued:
“You passed the first test.”
A pause.
“Now let’s see if you survive the second.”
And from beneath the floor came a sound Ethan recognized instantly.
A gun being cocked.
Then Edmund laughed.
