Clara read Julian’s message three times.

Can we talk?

She hated those words.

There was something uniquely dangerous about the phrase you need to know.

It suggested that the truth had been waiting somewhere in the dark, patiently growing teeth.

Clara slipped her phone into her pocket.

Her assistant looked up from her desk.

“Are you going somewhere?”

“Yes.”

“Should I cancel the two o’clock?”

“No.”

“Do you need me to—”

“No.”

Clara grabbed her coat.

Then stopped.

“Actually…”

Her assistant waited.

“If Ethan Calloway calls, tell him I’m unavailable.”

The assistant nodded.

“Of course.”

Clara walked toward the elevator.

Her heart was beating too fast.

She didn’t know what Julian wanted to tell her.

But she knew one thing.

He had been there.

Julian had known her for almost four years.

He had watched her rebuild her life.

He had listened to her talk about Ethan.

He had been there on nights when she couldn’t sleep.

He had seen the scars Ethan had left behind.

If Julian had information about Ethan that could change everything, why had he waited until now?

That question frightened her more than the answer.

Julian was waiting at a small café three blocks from the studio.

It was one of those places with wooden tables, exposed brick walls, and overpriced coffee served in cups that were too small.

Clara walked inside.

Julian stood immediately.

“You came.”

“You sounded serious.”

“I am.”

They sat.

A waiter approached.

“Coffee?”

Julian looked at Clara.

“Tea.”

“Black coffee.”

The waiter nodded and left.

Clara leaned forward.

“What do you know?”

Julian didn’t answer immediately.

That irritated her.

“Julian.”

“I need you to promise me something.”

“No.”

He blinked.

“You don’t even know what I’m asking.”

“Then you should know me well enough to understand that I don’t make promises before hearing the question.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“There she is.”

“Don’t.”

“Sorry.”

He became serious again.

“I need you to listen before deciding what you think.”

“About Ethan?”

“Yes.”

Clara folded her arms.

“Go ahead.”

Julian looked toward the window.

“When you told me about the breakup seven years ago, you said Ethan chose his company over you.”

“He did.”

“Yes.”

Clara waited.

Julian’s fingers tightened around his coffee cup.

“But that wasn’t the whole story.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean there were things you didn’t know.”

“What things?”

Julian looked at her.

“I wasn’t supposed to know them either.”

“Then how do you?”

He hesitated.

“Because of my father.”

Clara frowned.

“What does your father have to do with Ethan?”

“More than you think.”

The waiter arrived with their drinks.

Neither touched them.

Julian waited until the waiter left.

Then he lowered his voice.

“My father was one of Calloway Holdings’ external advisers.”

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

“I know.”

“He was involved in the Bellmont acquisition.”

“Again, I know.”

Julian shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

He pulled a folded document from his coat.

Clara stared at it.

“What is that?”

“An old correspondence.”

He placed it on the table.

“Between my father and Richard Calloway.”

Clara didn’t touch it.

“Why are you showing me this?”

“Because I think Richard Calloway knew Ethan was going to propose to you.”

Clara’s breath caught.

“What?”

Julian nodded.

“And I think he did something to make sure Ethan couldn’t get to you that night.”

The café seemed to disappear.

Clara stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Richard didn’t want you in Ethan’s life.”

Her heart began pounding.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“I thought so too.”

“You’re telling me his father deliberately stopped him from coming to me?”

“I don’t know exactly what he did.”

“Then why are you saying this?”

“Because I found these.”

Julian tapped the documents.

Clara finally reached for them.

The first page contained an email.

The sender was Richard Calloway.

The recipient was Julian’s father.

The date was seven years old.

Clara’s eyes moved across the screen.

Then stopped.

She cannot become part of the family.

Her fingers trembled.

She read the sentence again.

Below it was another.

Ethan is too emotionally compromised to understand what this relationship will cost him.

Clara’s breathing became shallow.

“There’s more.”

Julian handed her another page.

This one was worse.

Keep the board meeting in place.

He must remain focused on the company.

If necessary, remind him what happens when personal attachments interfere with business.

Clara looked up.

“What board meeting?”

Julian shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

She looked back at the page.

“Why didn’t you show me this before?”

“Because I didn’t have enough evidence.”

“You have evidence now?”

“I have more than this.”

Clara’s voice hardened.

“Then show me.”

Julian reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a second envelope.

“This came from my father’s private files after he died.”

Clara froze.

“Your father is dead?”

“Two years ago.”

She softened.

“Julian…”

“He left behind hundreds of documents.”

He placed the envelope on the table.

“This was marked with Ethan’s name.”

Clara stared at it.

“Why didn’t you open it?”

“I did.”

“And?”

Julian’s expression changed.

“I wish I hadn’t.”

Clara opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Ethan.

Younger.

Standing outside a hospital.

His face was pale.

His shirt was wrinkled.

His hands were shaking.

Clara knew the photograph immediately.

It was from the night she left.

She turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

11:48 p.m.

Clara looked at Julian.

“What happened at 11:48?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why show me?”

“Because there’s one more thing.”

He took out another document.

This one contained a hospital visitor record.

Clara scanned it.

Ethan Calloway.

11:52 p.m.

She looked up.

“He was at the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“So what?”

Julian leaned closer.

“Look at the next name.”

Clara looked down.

Her eyes widened.

Richard Calloway.

Then another name.

Victoria Calloway.

Clara’s pulse accelerated.

“Victoria was there?”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan’s father?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Ethan say he was alone?”

Julian’s face tightened.

“He didn’t.”

Clara stared at him.

“What?”

“He never told you he was alone.”

She remembered.

Ethan had said:

I was at the hospital.

He hadn’t said anything else.

Julian continued.

“I think someone in that family has been hiding what really happened.”

Clara looked at the documents again.

Her mind raced.

She remembered Ethan’s expression when he had told her about his father.

He had looked genuinely devastated.

But if Victoria had been there…

Why had nobody told Clara?

Why had Ethan never explained?

Why had Richard sent those emails?

And why did Julian’s father have them?

Her phone buzzed.

Clara looked down.

A message from Naomi.

Naomi: Where are you?

She didn’t answer.

Julian watched her.

“You don’t have to decide anything today.”

“I know.”

“Don’t confront Ethan yet.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if we’re right, there’s something much bigger underneath this.”

Clara stared at him.

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then find out.”

Julian nodded.

“I will.”

She stood.

Then stopped.

“Julian.”

“Yes?”

“Thank you.”

He looked at her.

“For what?”

“For telling me.”

He gave a small smile.

“You deserved to know.”

Clara picked up the documents.

“I’m taking these.”

“I expected you would.”

She walked toward the door.

“Clara?”

She turned.

Julian looked unusually serious.

“Whatever happens next, don’t let Ethan’s father decide what you feel.”

She frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Julian hesitated.

“Richard Calloway has spent years controlling the people around him.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

“Don’t let him control you too.”

Ethan was standing in the lobby of Calloway Holdings when Clara walked through the doors.

He saw her immediately.

Something inside him lifted.

Then he noticed her expression.

That feeling disappeared.

She walked directly toward him.

No hesitation.

No greeting.

No smile.

She stopped inches away.

“Your father.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“What about him?”

“Did he know you were going to propose to me?”

Silence.

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Where did you hear that?”

“Answer me.”

“Clara—”

“Did he know?”

“Yes.”

The answer came quietly.

Her heart sank.

“How?”

Ethan looked around the lobby.

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

“My office.”

She turned toward the elevators.

“Fine.”

Ethan followed.

Neither spoke during the ride.

When the doors opened, they walked into his office.

Ethan closed the door.

Clara placed the documents on his desk.

His eyes landed on them.

He went completely still.

“Where did you get those?”

“Julian.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Of course.”

“You knew?”

“Not about the documents.”

“But you knew your father didn’t want me.”

“Yes.”

“When did you find out?”

Ethan looked away.

“After you left.”

Clara’s anger surged.

“After?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you were gone.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Ethan ran a hand through his hair.

“Because I didn’t know what was true.”

“Your father said I couldn’t become part of the family.”

“I know.”

“He tried to keep you away from me.”

“I know.”

“And you did nothing?”

Ethan looked at her.

“I was twenty-four.”

“You were my boyfriend.”

“I know.”

“You were supposed to fight for us.”

“I did.”

“Not hard enough.”

The words hit him.

He nodded.

“Probably not.”

Clara stared at him.

That wasn’t the answer she expected.

She had come prepared for denial.

For excuses.

For anger.

Instead, Ethan looked exhausted.

“I confronted my father after I found out,” he said.

“And?”

“He told me you had left because you were tired of waiting.”

Clara’s throat tightened.

“And you believed him?”

“No.”

“Then what did you do?”

“I went looking for you.”

She froze.

“What?”

“I went to your old apartment.”

“I had already moved.”

“I know.”

“Then?”

“I searched for you.”

Her anger faltered.

“I couldn’t find you.”

Clara looked down.

“You could have tried harder.”

“I did.”

“Not hard enough.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Ethan said something that made her heart stop.

“There was another reason I didn’t tell you.”

She looked up.

“What?”

His eyes were filled with something she couldn’t identify.

Fear.

“I was ashamed.”

“Of what?”

He swallowed.

“I knew my father had manipulated me.”

He looked away.

“And I hated myself for letting him.”

Clara said nothing.

Ethan walked toward the window.

“I had spent my entire life believing I was smarter than everyone.”

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“Then the first time it mattered, I realized I wasn’t.”

He turned back.

“I let him control my priorities.”

“I let him convince me that you were a distraction.”

“I let him teach me that success mattered more than happiness.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“And by the time I understood what he had done…”

He stopped.

“You were gone.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

She didn’t want to cry.

Not here.

Not in front of him.

“Why didn’t you tell me this years ago?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Because I thought you deserved better than a man who needed seven years to understand his own life.”

The room went silent.

Clara looked at the documents.

Then at him.

There was a truth beginning to emerge.

One that made everything more complicated.

Maybe Ethan had failed her.

Maybe his father had manipulated him.

Maybe both were true.

But one question remained.

She pointed to the document.

“What’s the board meeting?”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“I don’t know.”

“Your father mentioned keeping you focused.”

“Yes.”

“On what?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Think.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then his face changed.

He remembered.

The board meeting.

The emergency call.

The hospital.

His father’s voice.

One sentence.

He opened his eyes.

“Oh God.”

Clara stepped closer.

“What?”

Ethan looked at her.

“My father knew I was going to propose.”

“I know.”

“No.”

His voice was suddenly different.

“He didn’t just know.”

Clara’s heart raced.

“What are you saying?”

Ethan looked at the old documents.

Then at her.

“He knew exactly when I planned to leave the meeting.”

“Why?”

His face went pale.

“Because he was the one who scheduled the meeting.”

Clara stared at him.

The pieces shifted.

The hospital.

The board meeting.

The proposal.

The missed presentation.

Richard Calloway.

And suddenly, one horrifying possibility emerged.

Maybe Ethan hadn’t simply been delayed that night.

Maybe someone had planned for him to be delayed.

Ethan reached for his phone.

“I need to call my sister.”

Clara caught his wrist.

“Why?”

“Because Victoria was at the hospital.”

He looked into her eyes.

“And if she knows why…”

His phone began ringing.

Ethan looked down.

Victoria Calloway.

Neither of them moved.

Then Ethan answered.

“Victoria?”

There was silence on the other end.

His expression slowly changed.

“What?”

Clara watched him.

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

“Where are you?”

Another pause.

Then:

“Why are you asking me about the night Clara left?”

Clara’s blood ran cold.

Ethan’s face drained of color.

Victoria said something.

Ethan listened.

Then his eyes lifted toward Clara.

“She’s here.”

A longer silence.

And then Victoria spoke four words that changed everything.

“Then she needs to leave.”
