The ballroom is still buzzing when I step back onto the stage.

The energy is electric, charged with the kind of tension that comes from a room full of people who know they’re witnessing something historic.

Something they’ll talk about for years.Full novel: The Return Of The Discarded Wife — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

I walk to center stage.

The lights hit me.

The crowd quietens.

I look out at the sea of faces.

Editors.

Buyers.

Influencers.

The most powerful people in the fashion industry.

And in the front row, Elijah.

Still pale.

Still frozen.

Still watching me like I’m a ghost come back to haunt him.

Isabella is beside him, her fingers digging into his arm, her face a mask of barely controlled fury.

Victoria sits rigid, her wine glass clutched in her hand like a lifeline.

They have no idea what’s coming.

“Someone asked me earlier,” I begin, my voice calm and steady, “why I disappeared seven years ago.”

The room is silent.

You could hear a pin drop.

“I’ve been asked that question a lot over the years.

By reporters.

By colleagues.

By people who don’t understand how someone could walk away from everything and start over with nothing.”

I pause.

I let the silence stretch.

I let them wonder.

“The truth is, I didn’t disappear.

I escaped.”

Gasps ripple through the crowd.

I see the shock on their faces.

The curiosity.

The hunger for more.

“You see,” I continue, “seven years ago, I was married.

Married to a man who never saw me.

A man who treated me like a transaction.

A man who used me for my blood and discarded me when he was done.”

I let my gaze drift to Elijah.

His face is white.

His jaw is tight.

He knows what’s coming.

He knows I’m about to expose everything.

“I was invisible.

I was broken.

I was the unwanted wife.”

The words hang in the air, heavy with years of pain.

“But I didn’t stay invisible.

I walked away.

I started over.

I built an empire with nothing but my own two hands.” I smile.

“And tonight, I’m going to show you why.”

I reach into my pocket.

I pull out my phone.

I feel the weight of it in my hand.

The weight of seven years of silence, finally about to be shattered.

“Someone sent me a video, seven years ago.

A video that changed everything.

A video that showed me the truth about my marriage.”

I connect my phone to the stage’s AV system.

The massive screen behind me flickers to life.

“Watch,” I say.

“Watch what I endured.”

The video begins to play.

Grainy at first, then clearer.

The bridge at sunset.

The roses scattered across the stone.

Elijah on his knees.

Isabella standing before him, her hands pressed to her mouth in a gesture of fake surprise.

And then his voice.

Clear and cold and devastating.

“This marriage is a transaction.

You’re the only one I’ve ever loved.”

The crowd gasps.

I see the shock on their faces.

The disbelief.

The horror.

Isabella’s face goes white.

Her hand flies to her mouth.

She looks like she’s about to be sick.

Elijah stares at the screen, his expression frozen somewhere between shock and devastation.

I see the recognition in his eyes.

The memory of that moment.

The weight of his words finally crashing down on him.

Victoria’s wine glass shatters on the floor.

She doesn’t even notice.

She’s staring at the screen like she’s seen a ghost.

The video continues playing.

Elijah sliding the ring onto Isabella’s finger.

His grandmother’s ring.

The ring that was supposed to be mine.

Isabella’s triumphant smile.

The way she looked at him like he was her prize.

I let it play.

I let everyone see.

I let the world witness the moment that broke me.

And then, when it’s over, I speak.

“This is what I endured.

This is why I left.

This is the man who promised to love me and then proposed to someone else while I was still his wife.”

The room is chaos.

People are shouting.

Cameras are flashing.

Reporters are scrambling.

But I don’t stop.

I can’t stop.

“I was a transaction to him.

A solution to a problem.

A blood donor for a woman who faked an illness to steal my husband.”

Isabella screams.

“That’s not true!”

“Really?” I turn to her.

“Then explain the hospital records.

The fake diagnoses.

The years of manipulation.”

“I didn’t—”

“You did.” I cut her off.

“You destroyed my marriage.

You destroyed me.

And you sat back and watched while I bled for you.”

Isabella is shaking.

Her carefully constructed facade is crumbling.

I see the fear in her eyes.

The desperation.

The knowledge that her lies are about to be exposed.

“How did you get that video?” Elijah’s voice cuts through the chaos.

He’s standing now, his eyes blazing, his body trembling with barely controlled emotion.

“It doesn’t matter how I got it.” I turn to him.

“What matters is that it’s real.

What matters is that you said those words.

What matters is that you destroyed me.”

“I didn’t—”

“You did.” I step closer to the edge of the stage.

“You signed the papers.

You let me go.

You chose her.

And you never once looked back.”

“Hannah, please—”

“Don’t.” I hold up my hand.

“Don’t you dare say my name like you have any right to it.”

He’s silent.

For the first time since I’ve known him, he’s completely, utterly silent.

The chaos continues around us.

Reporters are shouting questions.

Security is trying to contain the crowd.

Isabella is crying.

Victoria is frozen.

But I don’t see any of it.

All I see is him.

The man who made me invisible.

The man who is now staring at me like I’m the only person in the room.

“This is what I endured,” I say again, my voice quiet but clear.

“This is what I survived.

And this is why I will never let anyone make me invisible again.”

I step back from the microphone.

I walk off the stage.

I don’t look back.

I can’t look back.

If I do, I’ll see his face.

I’ll see the devastation in his eyes.

I’ll see the guilt and the regret and the desperate need to make things right.

And I’ll want to believe him.

I’ll want to believe that he’s changed.

I’ll want to believe that he actually cares.

But I know better.

I’ve known better for seven years.

The backstage area is chaos.

Emily is waiting for me, her face pale, her eyes wide.

“Hannah.

Oh my God.

What did you just do?”

“Whatever I had to.”

She hugs me.

“You’re incredible.”

“I know.” I manage a smile.

“But I don’t know what happens now.”

“Whatever happens, we’ll face it together.”

I nod.

I don’t have words.

I don’t have anything except the adrenaline pumping through my veins and the knowledge that I just changed everything.

The sound of footsteps echoes behind me.

I turn.

Elijah is there.

He’s standing in the doorway, his chest heaving, his eyes wild.

“Hannah.

We need to talk.”

“No.” I shake my head.

“We don’t.”

“Please.

Just give me five minutes.”

“I gave you five years.

You wasted them.”

“I know.

I know I did.

But—”

“No.” I cut him off.

“There are no buts.

There are no excuses.

There is nothing you can say that will change what happened.”

“Then let me try.” He steps closer.

“Let me try to make it right.”

“Too late.” I hold up my hand.

“You’re too late.”

“I’m not—”

“Yes, you are.” I meet his eyes.

“You’re seven years too late.

And nothing you say or do will change that.”

He opens his mouth.

Closes it.

Opens it again.

“Please,” he whispers.

“I’m begging you.”

“Good.” I turn away.

“Begging suits you.”

I walk away.

I don’t look back.

I can’t afford to.

If I look back, I’ll see his face.

I’ll see the desperation in his eyes.

I’ll see the man I used to love, the man I still love, the man I will always love no matter how much I try to stop.

But I can’t let that matter.

I can’t let him back in.

I can’t let him destroy everything I’ve built.

Because if I do, I’ll lose everything.

And I’ve lost enough already.
