THE WHISPERING MIRE
The first light of dawn arrived without a sunrise.
Instead of the sun climbing above the horizon, the endless black sky slowly faded into deep blue as countless silver streams dissolved into the heavens.
Within minutes, daylight spread across the Endless Road.
The golden barrier surrounding the temporary rest point shimmered once before dissolving into countless particles of light.
A calm mechanical voice echoed inside every traveler’s mind.
SAFE ZONE HAS CLOSED.
DAY TWO HAS BEGUN.
CONTINUE YOUR JOURNEY.
The peaceful atmosphere that had settled over the camp vanished instantly.
Everyone became busy.
Campfires were extinguished.
Supplies were packed.
Weapons were inspected.
Parents hurried children into their wagons while Road Beasts were checked for injuries.
Kael tightened the leather straps securing his cargo before giving the Ashen Draft Horse a handful of dried grass mixed with pieces of monster meat.
The horse sniffed the unfamiliar food cautiously.
After a few moments, it began eating.
A notification appeared.
Road Beast Satisfaction Increased.
Loyalty +1
Stamina Recovery Increased by 10% for Today.
Kael smiled faintly.
“So taking care of you has rewards.”
The horse responded with a soft snort before nudging his shoulder.
Nearby, Garrick approached while carrying his mantis spear across one shoulder.
“Heading out alone?”
Kael nodded.
“I move better that way.”
“I figured.”
Garrick crossed his arms.
“A few of us are forming a caravan.”
Kael looked toward the center of camp.
Nearly fifteen wagons had gathered together.
The survivors were discussing marching positions and assigning roles.
“We’ll have more firepower,” Garrick explained.
“But we’ll also move slower.”
Kael understood immediately.
Large groups attracted attention.
Small groups lacked protection.
Neither option was perfect.
“What about you?” Kael asked.
Garrick chuckled.
“I’ve somehow become everyone’s shield.”
His smile faded slightly.
“If I can stop another family from ending like mine…”
“…I’ll take the responsibility.”
Kael extended his hand.
“Stay alive.”
Garrick shook it firmly.
“You too.”
Without another word, the two men climbed onto their respective wagons.
The temporary rest point gradually emptied.
Some caravans left in groups.
Others departed alone.
Within half an hour, the circular platform stood abandoned once more.
The Endless Road welcomed a new day.
Kael traveled alone for nearly three hours.
Unlike the previous day, the scenery changed far more rapidly.
The silver forests gave way to open plains.
The plains became rocky hills.
The hills slowly transformed into damp wetlands.
Water pooled on both sides of the black road.
Strange trees with twisted roots rose from the shallow marshes.
Gray mist floated above the stagnant water.
Even during daylight, visibility dropped dramatically.
A foul smell drifted through the air.
Rotting vegetation.
Wet soil.
Something else…
Something metallic.
Blood.
Kael slowed the wagon.
“The Whispering Mire.”
The merchant’s warning returned to his mind.
The horse became visibly nervous.
Its ears flattened.
Its breathing quickened.
Kael climbed down.
The road remained perfectly dry despite the surrounding swamp.
That alone felt unnatural.
He scanned the area carefully.
No movement.
No monsters.
Only silence.
Then…
Someone whispered his name.
His grip tightened around the hatchet.
The voice had come from the swamp.
Soft.
Gentle.
Familiar.
He slowly turned his head.
Nothing.
Only gray mist drifting between ancient trees.
Again.
“Kael…”
This time the voice sounded closer.
Almost beside him.
He immediately remembered the silver forest.
Illusions.
The road had already taught him one lesson.
Never trust voices beyond the road.
Ignoring the whispers, Kael climbed back onto the wagon.
“Move.”
The horse obeyed.
The wagon continued forward.
The whispering didn’t stop.
Instead…
More voices joined.
His former driving instructor.
A childhood friend.
His mother.
His father.
Every person he had ever known seemed to call his name from within the fog.
“Come here…”
“We found a way home…”
“We’re waiting…”
Kael closed his eyes briefly.
“Not real.”
He repeated the words aloud.
“Not real.”
The whispers grew louder.
The mist thickened.
Soon Kael could barely see twenty meters ahead.
Then…
A figure appeared on the road.
A young woman stood motionless in the center of the black stone.
She wore a simple white dress.
Her long black hair covered part of her face.
She wasn’t transparent.
She wasn’t hiding among the trees.
She stood directly on the road.
The horse stopped immediately.
Kael frowned.
This was different.
The system had warned against leaving the road.
Not against someone standing on it.
The woman slowly raised her head.
Her face froze Kael where he sat.
It was his younger sister.
Or rather…
Someone wearing her face.
Impossible.
She had died years ago.
The woman smiled sadly.
“You took so long.”
Kael didn’t answer.
“You still blame yourself.”
Silence.
“You think if you’d reached the hospital earlier…”
“…I would still be alive.”
His breathing became uneven.
The memory struck like a knife.
Rain.
A speeding truck.
An ambulance caught in traffic.
The endless feeling that he should have done something more.
The woman took one step closer.
“I don’t blame you.”
Another step.
“Come with me.”
“We can go home.”
Kael slowly reached into his wagon.
Not for the hatchet.
For the tiny black Road Seed.
The moment it touched his palm…
The Road Forge mark above his heart burned.
A new notification appeared.
Foreign Mental Influence Detected.
Road Forge Passive Skill Activated.
Traveler’s Resolve
The burning sensation spread throughout his body.
The illusion shattered.
His sister’s face twisted violently.
Eyes became empty sockets.
The white dress transformed into gray roots and hanging vines.
Standing before him wasn’t a woman.
It was a creature nearly three meters tall.
Its body consisted entirely of tangled tree roots wrapped around dozens of human skulls.
Each skull whispered continuously.
Hundreds of different voices echoed together.
Above the creature floated glowing words.
Whispering Root Mother
Rank: E
Level: 9
The monster screamed.
The pleasant voices disappeared.
Only piercing shrieks remained.
The horse panicked.
Kael immediately grabbed the reins.
“Forward!”
The wagon surged ahead.
The Root Mother slammed both root-covered arms onto the road.
Massive thorny vines burst from the swamp, attempting to wrap around the wagon.
Kael seized the hammer.
Not to attack.
To defend.
He struck the emergency release pin holding the rear cargo crate.
The crate detached instantly.
It crashed onto the road behind them.
The pursuing vines wrapped around it instead.
The heavy wooden box was dragged screaming into the swamp.
The delay lasted only seconds.
But seconds mattered.
The horse pulled harder.
The wagon accelerated.
Behind them, the Root Mother let out another deafening scream.
Dozens of smaller root creatures emerged from the marshes.
They resembled crawling infants made from tangled branches.
Hundreds of them flooded toward the road.
Kael’s eyes searched desperately.
Then he saw it.
A narrow stone bridge spanning a deep section of swamp.
The road crossed directly over it.
The bridge looked ancient.
Weathered.
Barely wide enough for a single wagon.
There was no alternative path.
The Ashen Draft Horse charged forward.
The wagon rattled violently as its wheels crossed uneven stone.
Halfway across—
CRACK!
One of the bridge’s side supports collapsed.
The entire structure tilted.
The left wheel lifted from the ground.
Kael threw his weight to the opposite side.
The wagon slammed back onto the bridge.
Behind them, the swarm of root creatures reached the crossing.
The old bridge groaned.
Then…
It gave way.
Stone exploded into the swamp below.
The pursuing creatures disappeared beneath black water along with the collapsing bridge.
Only the section directly beneath Kael’s wagon remained intact long enough for the horse to leap onto solid road.
Seconds later…
The remaining stones collapsed into the mire.
Silence returned.
Kael pulled the wagon to a stop nearly two hundred meters away.
He climbed down slowly.
His hands trembled.
Not from exhaustion.
From realization.
If the Road Forge hadn’t exposed the illusion…
If he had stepped toward the creature…
If he had hesitated on the bridge…
He would already be dead.
A familiar notification appeared.
Whispering Mire Cleared.
First Hidden Hazard Survived.
Reward Granted.
Traveler Experience Increased.
Road Coins +50
New Title Unlocked: Clear-Minded Traveler
Kael leaned against the wagon and released a long breath.
One danger remained behind him.
Two more awaited ahead.
The Broken Bridge.
And beyond that…
The mysterious Red Toll Gate.
He looked toward the endless road stretching into the distance.
“This journey…”
“…is only getting started.”
