The last thing he remembered was the rain.

It fell against the windows of the nearly empty office, turning the city beyond the glass into a blur of pale lights and moving shadows. His computer screen illuminated a desk cluttered with unfinished reports, a half-empty cup of coffee, and a photograph he had kept for years without ever thinking much about it.

He was tired.Full novel: The Rogue System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Not the kind of tired that a good night's sleep could fix, but the quiet exhaustion that came from spending years doing what was necessary without ever deciding what he truly wanted.

He leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.

Twenty-eight years.

That was how long he had lived, and if someone asked him what he had accomplished, he wasn't sure what he would say.

He had a stable job. A small apartment. Enough money to survive, occasionally enough to enjoy himself, and no one depending on him. He wasn't particularly successful, but neither was he a failure.

He had simply existed.

As a child, he had imagined a future filled with possibilities. As he grew older, those possibilities gradually became responsibilities, then obligations, until he stopped imagining altogether.

He had never been particularly reckless. He observed before acting, thought before speaking, and avoided problems that offered no worthwhile reward. Some people called him intelligent. Others called him distant.

He didn't care enough to correct either opinion.

His phone vibrated.

A message from a colleague asking whether he had finished the report.

He glanced at the screen, typed a brief reply, and gathered his belongings. It was past midnight. Whatever remained unfinished could wait until morning.

Outside, the rain had weakened to a drizzle.

He walked toward the parking area with his collar raised and his thoughts wandering aimlessly. The streets were quieter than usual, and the reflections of streetlights stretched across the wet pavement.

He noticed the headlights before he understood what was happening.

A vehicle came around the corner too quickly.

There was a horn. A sharp burst of light. The squeal of tires against wet asphalt.

For one strange moment, his mind became completely clear.

So this is how it happens.

He had no time to run.

The impact threw him sideways. Pain flashed through him, then receded into a distant sensation he could barely comprehend. Somewhere nearby, a person shouted. Footsteps approached.

He tried to breathe.

His body refused to cooperate.

The sky above him was dark, the rain cold against his face. He could hear someone telling him to stay awake, promising that help was coming.

He wanted to answer.

He wanted to say that he understood, that he wasn't afraid, that there was no need to make promises they couldn't guarantee.

But his mouth wouldn't move.

His thoughts began to scatter.

He thought about the unfinished report. The money in his bank account. The books he had meant to read and the places he had planned to visit someday.

Someday.

The word seemed almost ridiculous now.

He had spent so much of his life waiting for the right moment to begin living differently. He had always assumed there would be more time.

The sounds around him faded.

His final thought was neither profound nor heroic.

I should have done more.

Then the world disappeared.

He did not dream.

There was no tunnel of light, no welcoming voice, and no mysterious figure offering him a second chance.

There was only darkness.

Then came sensation.

Warmth. Pressure. A muffled sound that seemed to come from impossibly far away.

He tried to open his eyes, but his eyelids felt heavy. He attempted to move his hand and discovered that his body barely responded.

Panic stirred within him.

Where am I?

The question formed clearly, but the answer never came.

He could hear voices now. Several of them. Their words were unfamiliar, though their tone carried the unmistakable urgency of people dealing with something important.

Someone lifted him.

A bright light passed over his face.

Then a voice spoke close to his ear.

“It's a boy.”

He didn't understand.

He couldn't understand.

His thoughts slipped beneath a rising tide of confusion, and the darkness returned.

Far away from the life he had lost, a newborn child took his first breath.

And somewhere beyond his reach, an entirely different world continued turning, unaware that an ordinary man had just been given an extraordinary second beginning.
