“Aanya…”
The whisper echoed through the chamber.
Aanya’s heart skipped.
“Mum?”
The voice came again, softer this time.
“Don’t come closer.”
Aanya instinctively took a step toward the crack in the wall.
Aarav caught her wrist.
“Wait.”
She looked at him.
“That’s my mother’s voice.”
“I know.”
“But something feels wrong.”
The Keeper slowly stepped between them and the crack.
“Listen to him.”
Aanya frowned.
“Why?”
The Keeper’s face grew tense.
“Because Nightfall has learned how to borrow voices.”
The chamber fell silent.
Aanya stared at the crack.
Then the voice changed.
It laughed.
A cold laugh.
Nothing like her mother’s.
Aanya felt a chill run down her spine.
The silver light pouring through the crack suddenly turned black.
A shadow slipped into the room.
It had no face.
No shape.
It moved like smoke across the floor.
Aarav stepped in front of Aanya.
“What is that?”
The Keeper whispered,
“The real Nightfall.”
The shadow stopped.
Then two glowing silver eyes appeared within it.
The chamber became colder.
The shadow spoke.
“Subject Zero.”
Aanya stood her ground.
“My name is Aanya.”
The shadow turned toward Aarav.
“Subject One.”
Aarav’s jaw tightened.
“My name is Aarav.”
For a brief second, the shadow became perfectly still.
Then it smiled.
Aanya frowned.
“You know us?”
“I know every version of you.”
Images flashed around the room.
Aanya saw dozens of versions of herself.
Some older.
Some younger.
Some smiling.
Some crying.
Beside each one stood a different Aarav.
Aanya’s breath caught.
“So many…”
The shadow’s voice echoed.
“Every choice created another path.”
Aarav looked around the chamber.
“Those timelines were destroyed.”
“Were they?”
The shadow laughed quietly.
“Memories never truly disappear.”
Aanya looked at the shadow.
“What do you want from us?”
The room grew silent.
Then Nightfall answered.
“Come home.”
Aanya’s expression hardened.
“This isn’t my home.”
“It was.”
“It never was.”
Nightfall took a step closer.
“Your first memory was born here.”
Aanya shook her head.
“My future won’t be.”
The words echoed through the chamber.
For the first time, Nightfall stopped moving.
The Keeper looked at Aanya with surprise.
Aarav smiled faintly.
“You always know the right thing to say.”
Aanya rolled her eyes.
“I definitely don’t.”
For one tiny moment, despite the darkness surrounding them, they both smiled.
The Keeper noticed.
A strange warmth flickered through the room.
Nightfall’s voice became colder.
“That connection is the problem.”
Silver chains suddenly shot out from the darkness.
They wrapped around Aarav’s wrist.
“Aarav!”
Aanya grabbed him. New chapters come out on g.com first.
The black mark on Aarav’s wrist began glowing violently.
He fell to one knee.
“Aanya…
don’t let go.”
“I won’t.”
She held his hand tighter.
Nightfall whispered,
“If he stays with you…
he’ll remember everything.”
Aanya looked at Aarav.
He was in pain, but he shook his head.
“Don’t listen.”
Nightfall continued,
“His memories will destroy him.”
Aanya’s eyes filled with fear.
“What are you doing to him?”
The Keeper shouted,
“Break the chain!”
Aanya lifted the silver key her mother had given her.
Without thinking, she pressed it against the black chain.
A burst of silver light filled the chamber.
CRACK!
The chain shattered.
Nightfall let out a furious scream.
The entire chamber trembled.
The shadow slowly disappeared back into the crack.
But before vanishing completely, it spoke one last sentence.
“This was only the invitation.”
Silence returned.
Aarav took a deep breath and stood up.
“You okay?”
He nodded weakly.
“Yeah…”
He looked at the broken black chain on the floor.
“But I think it knows how to reach me now.”
Aanya looked toward the crack, now sealed once again.
The Keeper’s face had gone pale.
“This changes everything.”
Aanya frowned.
“What changes?”
The Keeper answered quietly,
“Nightfall has finally entered Ravenhall.”
Far above them, the university bell rang once.
Aanya and Aarav looked toward the ceiling.
The mystery wasn’t over.
It had only just begun.
