Chapter 24: The Venomous Gift of Ascension: Cassius Victus

The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse

"A Slave?" King Vilucious mused aloud, his voice dropping into a dangerous, mocking purr.

He didn’t break eye contact with the open roof, but his fingers tightened deliberately around Florianthum’s hand. High above, perched precariously on the edge of the fractured aesthetic rafter, Cassius sat looking down at them. His arms were pinned out of sight, bound tightly behind his back, leaving only his head visible as he peered into the grand hall below.

A ripple of sudden movement stirred at the court. The elite vampires shifted in their heavy robes, leaning into small clusters as hushed murmurs and sharp gossip broke the silence of the room.

Up on the roof, Cassius remained entirely still. But his eyes were no longer human. They had hollowed out into pitch-black voids, leaking wisps of living shadow once again that bled into the cool night air.

The remaining amusement vanished from Lord Vilucious’s features, his lips hardening into a tight, severe line as an oppressive fury gripped him. The air in the grand hall grew instantly colder, heavy with the weight of his rising temper. Recognizing the imminent danger, Florianthum moved decisively to intercept his wrath. She stepped into his immediate guard, raising her hands to frame his face- a calculating, intimate gesture designed to break his fixation on the rafters and draw his volatile focus back to herself.

When she spoke, her tone was a masterclass in poised, unyielding composure, projecting effortlessly over the restless murmurs of the assembled court. "This evening belongs to us, my precious!" she murmured, her gaze anchoring his.

"I am the architect of his capture; it was my hand that brought him to his knees. I claim him now as my rightful spoils. Given that he commanded the greatest strength among his peers, it is entirely fitting that I should be the one to break his spirit."

Yet, as the final syllables fell, the veneer of regal detachment shattered. A sudden, venomous intensity rasped through her voice, exposing a deep-seated malice that resonated through the golden, massive court hall. The sheer vitriol of her delivery left no room for ambiguity; she sought no ordinary subjection. Florianthum intended to orchestrate the total, irrevocable annihilation of Cassius’s very soul.

A smile ghosted across Lord Vilucious’s features, though it offered no warmth. On a visage defined by such otherworldly, flawless symmetry, the expression was profoundly unnerving- a chilling reminder of the absolute ruthlessness anchoring his power. Seizing the momentary shift in his demeanor, Florianthum smoothly extricated her hand from his grip. She spun toward the gallery, her composure fracturing into open rage as she commanded the guards of her battalion, "Bring him do-"

The order died in her throat. Vilucious caught her wrist mid-motion, his grip like iron as he hauled her backward. The sudden momentum spun her on her heels, sending her crashing directly against the hard plane of his chest.

He looked down into her startled eyes, the fluid, hypnotic patterns of his irises shifting like molten glass. "That is not my desire, my beloved," his voice a low, commanding vibration.

Before she could pull away, his long, gloved fingers tangled into the hair at the back of her head. With an unyielding yet strangely gentle pressure, he guided her face downward, tilting her head until her lips were positioned just beneath the curve of his throat. Florianthum stared up into his shifting gaze, her breath catching.

She became completely submerged in the crushing weight of his presence, entirely drenched in the intoxicating currents of his emotion, but instead of complaining, it looked like she was in love and was happily following what he did. Every shred of her resistance evaporated. Closing her eyes against the blinding glare of the chandeliers, Florianthum rose gracefully onto the heels of her metallic boots. With a sudden, deliberate surge of movement, she buried her fangs into the side of his neck. Her teeth pierced the precise spot where the dark blue royal sacrament had been poured- the sacred, luminescent essence reserved strictly for the grandest celebrations of ascension and ranking within the vampirian empire.

Instead of recoiling from the sudden flash of agony, Lord Vilucious’s features softened into an expression of profound, ecstatic pleasure. It was glaringly obvious to the watching court that the bite brought him no pain; rather, he was reveling in the dark ecstasy of the bond. Florianthum pulled back slightly, her tongue tracing the hollow of his throat to lick away the remaining drops of the thick, midnight-blue fluid. A low, vibrating chuckle rumbled in Vilucious’s chest, the light friction of her touch sending a faint, ticklish sensation through his cold skin.

He laughed softly, the sound rich and dark as his gloved fingers began to caress her hair with uncharacteristic gentleness. "Easy, my fierce Florianthum," he murmured, his voice laced with smooth amusement as he looked down at her. "Take your ease. The night is still young, and the prize is already yours."

The final syllables of Lord Vilucious’s sentence had barely faded into the heavy air of the grand hall when the tense quiet was shattered. High above, Cassius had been shifting his weight, desperately straining against his bounds to navigate a descent from the open rafters. The maneuver failed.

Thump.

With a sudden, violent lurch, he plummeted from the massive height, crashing directly onto the polished golden floor of the court with a sickening, resounding thump.

A collective gasp rippled through the assembled elites, but Cassius did not break. He was still very much alive. Sprawled upon the cold gold, his expression twisted into a mask of pure, ruthless defiance. From the hollow voids of his pitch-black eyes, a thick, dark liquid began to bleed, tracking sinister lines down his pale face.

Looking down at the broken figure on the floor, Lord Vilucious’s mocking expression vanished instantly, his features hardening into a severe, watchful seriousness. But the gravity of the moment was brief. As Cassius painfully began to push himself upward, dragging his bound body into a sitting position on the golden marble, the King’s severe mask cracked.

A cruel, condescending smirk returned to Vilucious’s lips. Florianthum remained frozen in place, her body still turned completely toward the King, her face inches from his throat as he looked over her shoulder at the prisoner.

"My, my," Vilucious murmured, a soft, dark chuckle bubbling up from his chest as he openly mocked the intruder. "Is this the legendary strength of a slave? Ahahaha..."

From the deep lacerations earned during his devastating impact, a strange and unsettling fluid began to seep onto the polished floor. It was a viscous, purple blood, shimmering with an eerie, glittery luminescence that caught the crystalline light of the chandeliers. Lord Vilucious’s eyes dilated at the bizarre sight, the sudden visual arresting his attention. A dark, twisted amusement flickered across his face. Masking his fury behind a veneer of mocking, theatrical concern, he tilted his head.

"What an extraordinary hue," Vilucious drawled, his voice dripping with condescension. "Tell me, have slaves begun adapting into decorative ornaments these days?"

With a smooth, deliberate motion, the King gently disengaged from Florianthum, lifting her hands off his chest and stepping away. He began a slow, measured descent toward the fallen captive, his oppressive aura swelling with every stride until the very air in the hall felt thick and suffocating. The elite vampires shrank back into the shadows as he passed.

"Cassius Victus," Vilucious announced aloud, his footsteps echoing rhythmically against the stone as he approached the bound figure. "A name spoken with reverence from your own... and yet, here you lie, nothing more than a shackled slave. Umm... might be a slave! Amusing, isn’t it?"

He brought his polished royal boots to a halt mere inches from where Cassius sat restrained, his limbs tightly pinned by the heavy bindings. Closing the remaining distance, Vilucious leaned down, his posture projecting absolute, unchallenged dominance. He stopped just beside the prisoner’s ear, his whisper cutting through the silence like a razor blade:

"This is my kingdom. Every wretched soul that draws breath within these walls does so purely by my decree. Did you truly believe your little rebellion went unnoticed? Don’t you think I already know exactly who you are?"

Cassius did not flinch. He lifted his gaze upward, staring directly back into the King’s eyes as the thick, black liquid continued to stream from his void-like sockets. On the cold, golden marble, the dark substance began to spread outwards, slowly inching toward the pool of glittery purple blood until the two contrasting fluids finally touched, swirling together into a grim, chaotic mosaic.

At the exact moment, Cassius’s lips peeled back into a horrific, blood-chilling smile aimed directly at the Lord of this unhinged realm. The mixing of his glittering purple blood with the black fluid from his eyes was not a sign of defeat; it was the catalyst for a terrifying alchemy. In a previous awakening, this union had granted him supernatural dominion, allowing him to shape the dark, viscous amalgam into physical constructs. Even as Vilucious began to turn his back, Cassius was already weaving his trap, manipulating the spreading puddle into a jagged, lethal silhouette- a sheer weapon designed to strike the King down from behind.

He never got a chance.

Before the fluid construct could launch, Florianthum’s sword came down with blinding speed, fracturing the rising weapon of dark purple liquid into a spray of droplets. Her eyes blazed with a horrifically furious, silent fire of dark blue energy, her features frozen in a cold, robotic mask of pure killing intent. The violent collision of her blade against the volatile shadow-blood unleashed an explosive reaction.

As Lord Vilucious whipped his head back around to face the commotion, a severe, blinding cinematic flash erupted from the impact, illuminating his startled face in stark, terrifying detail just as the world went black.
