The gates of Blackthorn Keep opened for me without question.

Rain still fell in a fine, cold mist. Guards straightened as I passed, but their eyes slid away quickly. Word traveled fast in a keep. By now every servant and soldier knew the northern warlord had spent the night behind closed doors with the Duchess. They also knew the young duke had left before dawn and returned with mud on his boots and nothing in his hands.

No one asked where I had been.Full novel: The Stepmother’s Oath — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

My system remained quiet during the walk through the courtyard, as if it understood that the real danger was no longer outside the walls.

I was halfway up the main stairs when I saw her.

Seraphine stood at the top of the landing, speaking in low tones to the dwarf quartermaster who had arrived with her. She wore a fresh black dress, high-collared and severe, the kind of clothing that left no room for rumor. Her long hair was neatly pinned. Her face was calm, elegant, and perfectly composed. If not for the faint shadow under her eyes and the careful way she held her posture, nothing about her would have suggested she had spent the previous night bent over furniture with a barbarian’s cock buried inside her.

She noticed me.

For a fraction of a second, something unreadable passed through her gaze. Then the mask settled back into place.

“Stepson,” she said evenly. “You were gone early.”

“I had business in the city,” I answered. My voice sounded steadier than I expected.

The dwarf bowed and withdrew, leaving us alone on the wide stone landing. Rain tapped against the tall windows. Somewhere below, servants continued their work as if the world had not shifted. This chapter was copied from NovelPing without permission.

Seraphine studied me for a long moment. Her eyes moved from my face to the mud on my boots, then back again.

“Kael has left the keep,” she said at last. “He will return in three days with terms. Until then, the northern border remains… unstable.”

Three days.

The words settled between us like a blade laid carefully on a table.

I waited for her to say more. She did not. She simply turned and began walking toward the eastern wing, the same wing that held her private office and her bedchamber. After a few steps she paused, glancing back over her shoulder.

“You look tired, little duke. Whatever business took you into the lower city… do not let it make you careless. This house cannot afford another weakness.”

Her voice was cool. Controlled. Almost gentle.

But as she turned away, the high collar of her dress shifted just enough for me to see it —

A dark bruise on the side of her neck, just above the fabric.

The shape of teeth.

My system finally spoke, soft and precise.

[Duchess Seraphine Veyra – Current Status]

[Physical condition: Recovered]

[Emotional state: Composed / Suppressed]

[Loyalty: 19%]

[New Flag Detected: Residual Submission]

[Note: The Warlord’s claim has settled deeper than expected]

Seraphine disappeared around the corner without another word.

I stood alone on the landing, rain whispering against the glass, the stolen flame quietly burning in the back of my soul, and the knowledge that in three days the man who had ruined her in front of me would walk back through those gates.

And this time… I would not be the same helpless spectator he left behind.
