Sleep did not come for me that night.

I sat in the dark of my chambers with my back against the headboard, watching the two stolen systems settle deeper into my soul. The flame had already become quiet and obedient. The shadow still resisted, flickering at the edges of my thoughts like a living thing that hated being owned. My original system monitored the process with clinical patience.

[Side effects: Mild auditory distortion. Occasional cold spots on the skin. Temporary increase in paranoia]

[These effects will fade upon full integration]

[Estimated completion: 4 hours, 20 minutes]

[Time until Warlord’s return: 2 days, 9 hours, 12 minutes]

Somewhere in the eastern wing, Seraphine was still awake. I did not need the system to tell me that. The memory of her fingers pressing against Kael’s bruise, the quiet way she had spoken to an empty room — those images refused to leave.

Three days is too long.

I turned the words over in my mind until they lost their shape.

When the gray light of morning finally pushed through the curtains, I washed, dressed, and left my room with the clear intention of avoiding her. The keep, however, had other plans.

I found her in the main hall.

Seraphine stood near the long table where the morning reports were usually laid out. She wore a high-collared black dress again, the bruise carefully hidden. Her hair was pinned with the same severe elegance as the day she first arrived. Only the faint tightness at the corners of her mouth betrayed that anything had changed.

For a moment neither of us spoke. The silence between us was heavier than it had been the day before. It carried the memory of a solar, a couch, and the sound of her voice breaking while another man used her.

“You did not sleep,” she said at last. It was not a question.

“Neither did you,” I answered.

A flicker of something — irritation, perhaps, or reluctant acknowledgment — moved through her eyes. She set down the parchment she had been reading.

“Kael’s terms will not be gentle,” she said quietly. “He did not ride this far only to reclaim a body he already marked years ago. He wants passage rights through Blackthorn territory. He wants supplies. And he wants a formal acknowledgment that the northern clans will not be treated as barbarians by this duchy.”

Her voice remained calm, but her fingers had tightened on the edge of the table.

“And if we refuse?” I asked.

Seraphine met my gaze directly.

“Then he will take what he wants the same way he took me in front of you. Without asking.”

The words landed between us like a blade laid flat on the wood.

My system spoke in the back of my mind, soft and precise.

[Duchess loyalty remains at 19%]

[She is speaking truthfully. The Warlord’s demands are only the surface]

[Warning: Host’s current strength is still insufficient to alter the coming negotiation]

Seraphine studied my face for a long moment, as if searching for the boy she had left in the solar that night. Whatever she found there made her expression tighten further.

“Do not do anything reckless before he returns,” she said. “This house survives by knowing when to bend. Pride is a luxury we burned in the last war.”

She turned and walked away, the hem of her black dress whispering against the stone. At the doorway she paused, just long enough to leave one final sentence behind her.

“The mark on my neck is not the only thing he left, stepson. Remember that.”

Then she was gone.

I stood alone in the main hall, the stolen flame and the half-integrated shadow burning quietly under my skin, and the countdown continuing its merciless march.

Two days and nine hours.

The warlord was coming back.

And this time, the young duke who waited for him was no longer completely empty-handed.
