The library was cold.

I closed the shaman’s journal and leaned back against the dusty shelf. The words I had read still burned behind my eyes.

The deeper brands cannot be cut out. They can only be overwritten by a stronger claim… or starved into dormancy by prolonged separation and rejection. Few ever manage the second. Rejection.

That was the only path the records offered. And rejection required Seraphine to refuse him — completely — when the brand woke.

My system displayed the countdown with merciless clarity.

[Time remaining until Warlord Kael Draven’s return: 21 hours, 44 minutes]

[Duchess current location: Eastern wing – private chambers]

[Brand status: Dormant]

[Host strength: Still insufficient for direct confrontation]

I left the library and walked the quiet corridors of the keep. Most of the household had already gone to sleep. Only the night guards remained at their posts. When I reached the eastern wing, I stopped in front of Seraphine’s door.

Light still showed beneath it.

After a long moment, her voice came from inside — low, controlled, and tired.

“Enter.”

She was standing by the window in a dark sleeping robe, her long black hair loose down her back. The bruise on her neck had faded to a yellowish shadow, but it was still visible. When she turned to look at me, there was no surprise in her expression. Only a quiet, heavy awareness.

“You should be resting,” she said.

“So should you.”

A faint, humorless smile touched her mouth. She looked back out the window.

“He will be here tomorrow,” she said. “And when he steps through those gates, the brand will stir. I can already feel the edge of it… like a hand resting against the back of my neck.”

I stepped closer.

“Can you resist it?”

Seraphine was silent for several seconds. When she finally answered, her voice was very soft.

“I don’t know.”

The honesty in those three words hit harder than any political calculation. She turned to face me fully. The robe had slipped slightly on one shoulder, revealing the upper curve of her breast and the lingering mark Kael had left. Her eyes met mine without flinching.

“If the brand takes hold,” she continued, “I may not be able to speak or act as the Duchess of Blackthorn. I may only be able to respond as the woman he once kept. That is the reality we are facing.”

My system pulsed quietly.

[Duchess is acknowledging high risk of temporary loss of agency]

[Recommendation: Host must prepare for rapid deterioration of the situation upon Warlord’s arrival]

I clenched my fists at my sides.

“I won’t just stand there and watch again.”

Seraphine studied me for a long moment. Something complicated moved through her gaze — regret, calculation, and a faint, reluctant warmth.

“Then you had better be ready to act when the moment comes,” she said. “Because once the brand wakes… words will not be enough.”

She walked past me toward the door of her bedchamber. At the threshold she paused, one hand resting on the frame.

“Go rest, stepson. Tomorrow will be difficult enough without both of us exhausted.”

The door closed behind her with a soft click.

I stood alone in the outer solar, the stolen systems burning quietly under my skin, and the countdown continuing its merciless march.

[Time remaining: 21 hours, 12 minutes]

Kael was coming back.

And this time, the brand inside my stepmother would wake with him.
