Chapter 3: Spiritual Line

THE SYSTEM IS NOT MINE

Yan woke before dawn.

The pain was already waiting. It sat inside the bone of his right arm like a tenant who refused eviction. The linen bindings had tightened during the night

Whenever he moved his arm, the pain still attacked him.

Yan lay still.

From beyond the thin wall came a cough. It was dry and shallow.

His father was still alive.

The sound did not comfort him. It merely confirmed that the house still contained breath.

White letters assembled against the dark rafters.

The number did not flicker. After a moment, it's changed

Primary Catalyst Detected

Yan closed his eyes. He already knew where it was.

By midmorning, the beast lay in the Chief’s courtyard beneath full daylight.

Washed. Measured. Reduced. Without the violet blood and the smoke of last night’s fire, it appeared almost manageable, a slab of muscle and hide instead of a predator that had nearly hollowed him out.

"Village Chief, we can sell these parts for a good price"

Men circled it, discussing yield.

Yan stood beyond them. The dried scent of ozone still clung faintly to his sleeve.

“Yan, You should be resting,” the Chief said without even looking at him. “That arm won’t heal itself.”

Yan nodded but did not leave.

A few breaths passed, The Chief glanced at him again. “What do you want? Why are you still here? "

“I want the heart,” Yan said.

Conversation thinned.

“The heart?” a butcher repeated.

Yan did not look at him.

Silence stretched. The Chief frowned slightly. “For what?”

Yan did not answer but stared at the Chief.

The silence spoke more than words could.

To them, it was worthless stringy muscle, spiritual contamination. No caravan bought the heart and everyone wanted hide and marrow.

The Chief waved a hand. “Take it. If swallowing it fixes you, that’s your affair.”

The chest cavity opened with a wet, heavy sound. Steam rose.

When the heart was placed into Yan’s hands, it felt heavier than flesh should. It pulsed once. He thought it was alive.

But dismissed the thought immediately.

Catalyst Acquired

Refinement Sequence Incomplete

Then he searched through his mind which now contained method refinement. He needed a few more ingredients.

Yan went back to home and placed the heart and then he moved along the village perimeter that afternoon. Iron leaf near stagnant irrigation. White Bitterroot beneath dry ridges where soil cracked. River moss clinging to shaded stone.

He gathered with his left hand. The right trembled if asked too much.

On his way back, the mothers pulled their kids again whenever they saw him.

Night returned without ceremony.

His father slept in the next room with uneven breathing while his mother and Taner slept next to him.

Yan barred his door. A single oil wick burned low, its flame thin and stubborn. The heart rested in a clay bowl.

Yan prepared the potion by mixing herbs with blood drawn from the heart

White text surfaced.

Failure Probability: 63%

Outcome of Failure:

60% Permanent Disability

30% Death

Sixty-three percent. The system did not soften the number. It presented probability the way a farmer reads the weather.

Yan stared at the potion.

Yesterday, the village had drawn a circle around him and left him outside it. Yesterday, his father turned toward the wall. Yesterday, something cold had begun remembering him.

He did not know what a spiritual line was. He only knew that remaining unchanged meant remaining disposable.

He took a deep breath, then he gulped down the potion.

The air thickened.

Red filaments rose from his heart’s surface.

They extended toward him from the inside.

Yan did not move.

The threads touched his skin.

Stability: 90%

An invisible barrier resisted.

The filaments trembled. Violently.

Stability: 70%

His vision fractured white. His injured arm convulsed, as though the beast’s teeth had returned to finish the work.

Stability: 60%

The threads lashed against emptiness.

For a suspended moment, they began to unravel.

Yan felt something inside him give way, but it was not in the flesh, something much deeper.

Structural Shift Detected

Pressure Redistribution: Observed

Alignment Vector: Adjusted

The filaments curved inward, not carving new space, but forcing space to exist.

Pain detonated behind his eyes. It felt like a heated wire driven through stone that had never been meant to hold anything. Something cracked. A soundless fracture.

Blood slid from his nose.

Stability: 30%

The filaments locked.

Yan remained kneeling.

White letters returned, steady and cold.

Spiritual Line Count : 1

Stability: 50%

Compatibility: 1.0%

The number had changed for the first time.

Yan wiped the blood from beneath his nose with the back of his sleeve. The oil wick sputtered. In the next room, his father coughed.

Yan stood. His arm still throbbed.

He stepped into the courtyard.

The light of the moon burned bright.

A dog barked near the eastern boundary.

The village slept behind shuttered windows.

For the first time, Yan was not inside the dark. He was looking at it.
