The rhythmic, metallic sound reverberated through the rocky ground beneath her head, echoing softly from the impenetrable darkness surrounding their temporary camp.

Her hand immediately reached down, her fingers closing tightly around the cold, textured grip of the plasma rifle resting beside her sleeping bag.

The night atmosphere was entirely too quiet, stripped of the usual nocturnal winds. She slowly pushed herself up into a low crouching position, her gaze cutting through the thick shadow.

"Everyone, wake up immediately," she commanded, her voice low yet carrying an undeniable edge of absolute military authority.

A few exhausted freshmen groaned in their sleep, shuffling lazily against the cold dirt without opening their eyes.

"Wake up. Now!" she repeated, her sharp tone slicing through the night like a drawn blade.

Her intense demeanor startled the sleeping cadets, causing several freshmen to jolt upright in pure panic. They rubbed their bleary eyes, reaching frantically for their sidearms as they looked around in confusion.

A pale noble girl scrambled to her feet, clutching a trembling energy pistol. "What happened? Did an evacuation shuttle finally arrive?"

Rhaevia did not look back at her, her unblinking eyes fixed entirely on the high rocky perimeter surrounding their position.

"Zergs," she stated flatly.

The very next instant...

ROAR!

A monstrous, ear-splitting shriek exploded through the darkness, shattering the night into utter chaos.

Hundreds of glowing, crimson eyes suddenly ignited between the dark boulders surrounding the valley. The terrifying sight revealed an overwhelming, wave-like horde of razor-clawed beasts crawling over the perimeter rocks.

"THEY’RE HERE!" a student shrieked, his voice cracking in sheer terror.

"Get your weapons! Form a defensive line!" another cadet screamed, tripping over his own supply crate in the dark.

"Where are the squad instructors? Why aren’t the defense drones firing?!" panic instantly swallowed the entire encampment as students scrambled blindly in every direction.

Rhaevia leaped smoothly onto a flat, elevated boulder, her sharp eyes mapping out the chaotic battlefield in less than two seconds.

Below her, the charging Zerg swarm was not spreading out randomly like hungry, mindless predators. Their calculated overlapping movements formed a clear, terrifyingly structured pattern.

"Hold your fire! Don’t shoot yet!" Rhaevia roared over the rising din of screaming cadets and skittering claws.

A nearby student stared up at her in utter madness, his thumb hovering frantically over his rifle’s firing stud. "What are you talking about?! They’re going to tear us to pieces!"

"I said wait," she ordered coldly, her gaze tracking the front line of the horde.

The mass of beasts continued their terrifying advance, kicking up clouds of dark soil as they closed the distance.

Thirty meters.

Twenty meters.

Ten meters.

Rhaevia’s dark eyes moved rapidly across the rocky terrain, analyzing the choke points and terrain angles.

She raised her arm and pointed forcefully toward a narrow, shadowed incline along the eastern ridge. "They are going to break through right there!"

The elite physical student who had challenged her authority earlier frowned, clutching his broadsword as he looked between her and the western barricade. "How could you possibly know that? The main force is clearly charging our western wall!"

"Because that frontal push on the west is a feint designed to force us to concentrate our primary defenses there," Rhaevia explained with chilling precision. "They are herding us."

She instantly turned to the main group, her voice cutting through the noise. "Move the entire heavy combat unit to the eastern ridge immediately! Leave the western barricade lightly defended with suppression fire!"

"That makes no sense!" the elite student yelled back.

"It will in thirty seconds!" Rhaevia snapped, her eyes narrowing.

The cadets hesitated for a fraction of a heartbeat, torn between standard academy theory and her raw battlefield instinct.

Suddenly, the leading wave of the Zerg swarm abruptly altered its path in perfect unison.

Instead of crashing into the heavily fortified western barricade, the massive horde swerved violently to the right, surging directly toward the narrow, eastern ridge gap.

The elite student’s face completely drained of color as the horrifying reality unfolded exactly as she had predicted.

"She... she was right!" he stammered in shock.

Rhaevia raised her energy rifle, her finger locking onto the trigger.

"NOW! FIRE!" she commanded.

The entire student unit unleashed a synchronized volley of high-yield plasma fire into the dark canyon.

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

Blinding beams of energy tore through the night sky, illuminating the valley in violent flashes of blue and crimson light.

Rhaevia stood high on the boulder, barking out continuous, precise adjustments over the deafening explosions.

She expertly directed their concentrated fire into predetermined bottleneck chokepoints, funneling the massive swarm into narrow corridors where their numerical advantage became utterly useless.

"Watch the left flank! Suppress the climbers!" she barked.

"Third squad, reload in rotations! Do not let your weapon heat sinks overheat!"

"Do not break formation to chase them! Hold your ground!"

Under her relentless, steady command, the terrified, unorganized cadets gradually transformed into a disciplined, functioning military unit.

The first wave of mutated beasts collapsed under the concentrated plasma fire, their heavy bodies piling up in the bottleneck.

Then the second wave shattered against the eastern stone wall.

Then the third wave was systematically wiped out in the crossfire.

By the time the first faint rays of dawn began breaking over the horizon, the makeshift camp was still standing completely intact.

Dozens of exhausted, sweat-drenched cadets collapsed onto the dirt, weeping in relief as they looked out over the mountain of dead Zergs.

The arrogant elite student slowly walked over to the high boulder where Rhaevia was wiping dark alien blood from her rifle barrel.

For several uncomfortable seconds, he stood in front of her without uttering a word.

Finally, he lowered his head slightly, unable to meet her intense gaze.

"I was completely wrong about you," he admitted softly, his voice rough with exhaustion.

Rhaevia briefly glanced down at him, her expression unreadable.

He tightly clenched his dirty fists at his sides. "You aren’t an E-rank trash... you’re a true commander."

Before Rhaevia could offer a response, an eerie, suffocating silence suddenly swept across the entire valley.

The few remaining, scattered Zergs on the outskirts of the battlefield completely stopped moving.

Every single crimson compound eye across the desolate plain slowly rotated, locking directly onto her slender figure.

Rhaevia’s calm expression gradually hardened into absolute ice as her battle-hardened instincts flared violently.

Something immensely powerful was rapidly approaching the camp.

The heavy ground trembled rhythmically as a massive, towering Zerg slowly emerged from the dark fog of the lower valley. Its body was covered in thick, metallic obsidian armor plates, vibrating with an unnatural dark red energy core.

Unlike every other wild beast they had fought, this creature did not rush forward to attack. It simply stood at the perimeter gap, towering over the dead, and stared directly into Rhaevia’s dark eyes.

Then, its massive, serrated mandibles slowly parted with a sickening, wet crunch. A raspy, heavily distorted voice, distinctly unnatural, escaped its guttural throat.

"King..." it rasped, the alien word echoing clearly across the frozen battlefield.

Rhaevia froze completely, her breath catching tightly in her throat.
