The soaring white marble gates of the Celestrix capital faded into the distance, but the echoing cheers of thousands of citizens still rang through the crisp morning air.
Caelum Sol-Zenith rode at the head of a small, polished imperial army battalion. His thick, platinum-blonde hair caught the pure sunlight, his bright blue eyes fixed resolutely on the open trail ahead. Riding tightly alongside him were his two lifelong companions: the twenty-year-old star mage, Selene, her silver hair flowing gracefully over her pristine white robes, and their twenty-three-year-old tank, Magnus, whose massive, gold-plated armor clanked heavily with every stride of his warhorse.
As they crossed the imperial border and entered the borders of a sprawling, deep ancient forest, the cheerful noises of the capital were replaced by the gentle rustle of leaves and the quiet chirping of birds.
"We are finally on the road, Caelum," Selene murmured, a soft, confident smile playing on her beautiful face as she adjusted her grip on her glowing crystal staff. "The high sanctuary’s predictions were right. The aura of this forest feels completely pure. It’s the perfect path to start our crusade."
Magnus grunted from behind his massive tower shield, a deep, older-brotherly rumble in his chest. "Don't let the silence fool you, little mage. A pure aura just means the monsters here are better at hiding. Keep your guard up."
Caelum let out a genuine, warm chuckle, turning his head to look at the massive warrior. "Always the protector, Magnus. But honestly... looking back at the years we spent trapped in those grueling sanctuary training chambers, I don't think any of us would be standing here today without you. Remember when we first started? I couldn't even swing a holy blade without losing my balance."
"And I kept crossing my mana circuits every time I tried to cast a high-tier barrier," Selene added, her indigo eyes shimmering with deep gratitude as she looked at the tank. "You spent countless extra hours letting us cast spells and strike your heavy armor just so we could learn the raw mechanics of physical impact. Thank you, Magnus. Truly."
Magnus’s ruggedly handsome face flushed a slight shade of red under his gold helmet, a rare, warm smile breaking through his serious demeanor. "Tsk. Save the sappy thanks for when we actually liberate your mother's homeland, you two. I only pushed you hard because a Chosen Hero and a High Mage are entirely useless to the world if they get slaughtered in their very first vanguard clash. You both earned your strength."
As the hours drifted by, the sun dipped beneath the canopy, plunging the deep forest into a thick, misty twilight. The imperial battalion smoothly halted, quickly setting up a highly organized military camp for the night. While the trained soldiers marched outward in tight circles to check the absolute boundaries and establish a secure lookout perimeter, a few attendants started lighting campfires, chopping wood, and cooking a hot, spiced stew that filled the clearing with a comforting aroma. Caelum sat by the fire, entirely relaxed, completely confident that his holy journey was unfolding flawlessly beneath the heavens.
.....
Meanwhile, hundreds of leagues away, deep within a completely different sector of the winding, rocky border valleys, another camp had settled for the night.
The Umbral Sovereignty's elite vanguard moved like silent ghosts through the dark crags. There were no bright, blazing campfires or loud chatter here; the demon warriors and dark elf scouts moved with absolute, disciplined silence under the cold starlight.
A bit away from the main camp, sitting entirely alone on a massive, smooth obsidian rock overlooking the misty valley, was Prince Raizael. His attractive crimson and gold royal silk robes were slightly unbuttoned at the collar, exposing his pale alabaster skin to the cool night breeze. His realistic, toned-down crimson eyes were fixed upward, staring deeply into the vast cosmic sea of stars.
Suddenly, a soft, warm weight pressed against his side. Princess Sylphiri leaned her upper body flat against his broad shoulder, her thick platinum-blonde hair cascading beautifully over his arm. Her long, pointed elven ears twitched softly in the quiet night air.
Raizael didn't pull away. He slowly tilted his head down, planting a soft, lingering kiss directly onto her flushed cheek, his fingers sliding up to trace her sharp jawline. "Is everything alright, my beautiful assistant? You seem a bit quiet tonight."
Sylphiri’s face instantly burned a bright, chaotic pink from the sudden physical intimacy, her violet eyes wide with a mixture of natural shyness and intense warmth. She leaned deeper into his hold, her fingers gently clutching his robe. "I... I am perfectly fine, Raizael. I am just... deeply appreciative that you actually chose to bring me with you on your very first deployment. Standing by your side like this makes me incredibly happy."
She paused, her violet eyes clouding over with a small, hesitant flicker of worry as she looked up at him. "But... will Morrigan truly be alright back at the castle? She looked so broken when we left. I cannot help but worry about her state."
Raizael turned his body slightly, extending both of his large hands to gently cup her flushed porcelain face, forcing her to look directly into his calm, unyielding gaze. A reassuring, dominant smile played on his lips.
"You don't need to worry about her, Sylphiri," Raizael whispered, his deep baritone voice smooth and comforting. "There is a highly specific, critical task that only she can execute within the capital walls. That is the sole reason I commanded her to stay behind and guard my sanctuary."
Sylphiri felt the last bits of her anxiety completely evaporate under his touch. She nodded softly, her long elven ears twitching with intense arousal and submission as she closed her eyes, completely melting against his chest under the volcanic starlight, thoroughly ensnared by his dark magnetism.
.....
The clock struck midnight back in the deep, ancient forest of the human empire.
The campfires had burned down to glowing embers, and Caelum’s entire party, along with the imperial soldiers, had retired to their tents, slipping into a deep, comfortable slumber. The forest was entirely silent, wrapped in a thick, heavy blanket of midnight fog.
“AAAHHH—! BANDITS! WE’RE UNDER ATTACK—!”
A sharp, blood-curdling shriek violently shattered the silence of the night. The desperate scream of an imperial lookout soldier echoed through the clearing, instantly followed by the chaotic, metallic clash of swords and the roaring sound of tents tearing apart.
“Wake up! Defend the Hero—! Mmph!”
Caelum’s blue eyes snapped wide open in absolute shock. He threw off his blankets, rapidly grabbing his holy sword and lunging out of his tent flap into the dark clearing.
The scene outside was a total, chaotic nightmare. The outer boundary lines had been completely breached. Surrounding the campsite was a massive, heavily armed group of brutal, scarred bandits wearing mismatched iron armor and wielding spiked maces and jagged blades. Several imperial soldiers already lay groaning in the dirt, caught entirely off-guard by the sudden midnight raid.
Standing at the front of the clearing, casually wiping a trail of fresh blood off his massive iron battleaxe, was the towering, scar-faced leader of the bandits. He looked at the young, blonde hero with a disgusting, mocking sneer.
"Well, well, look what we stumbled into boys! A pack of wealthy, pretty little noble runts playing soldier in our woods!" the bandit leader roared, his deep voice echoing through the terrified camp as his men tightened the circle, their weapons raised. He pointed the tip of his bloody axe directly at Caelum's face. "Surrender your weapons and bow down flat on your faces right now, little prince! Drop the gold, leave the silver-haired girl behind, and maybe we’ll let you crawl back to your daddy alive!"
Caelum gripped his holy sword, his knuckles turning white as his righteous fury flared, completely unaware that while he was struggling against common forest filth, the net of the Sovereign Regent was already closing around his final destination.
