Evelyn woke before sunrise.

She didn’t remember falling asleep.

The last thing she remembered was sitting beside the fireplace with Lucien, his hand wrapped around hers while they tried to make sense of everything Seraphine had told them.Full novel: The Villain’s Wife Knows the Ending — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Then darkness.

Then morning.

For several seconds, she remained motionless.

The room was cold.

The fire had gone out sometime during the night, leaving only a faint smell of ash behind.

She looked toward the chair where Lucien had been sitting.

Empty.

Her heart immediately accelerated.

She stood.

“Lucien?”

No answer.

She crossed the room and opened the door.

He was standing in the corridor.

He had changed into a dark coat and was speaking quietly with one of the palace guards.

The moment he saw her, he dismissed the man.

“You slept.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Apparently.”

“How long?”

“Enough.”

He studied her face.

“You look pale.”

“I had an interesting night.”

“So did I.”

“What happened?”

“I found something.”

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Lucien reached into his coat and removed a small piece of parchment.

“One of the guards found this beneath the door.”

Evelyn took it.

There were only three words.

Come alone, Duchess.

She looked up.

“When?”

“And you came to tell me?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because I’m not letting you go alone.”

Evelyn stared at him.

The memory of Seraphine’s warning returned.

Your past is waiting for you there.

She folded the parchment.

“The archives.”

Lucien nodded.

“The entrance is beneath the western wing.”

“Does Adrian know?”

“Not yet.”

“We should tell him.”

Lucien hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because he knows about the previous timelines.”

“Or because he wants us to believe he does.”

Evelyn sighed.

“You still don’t trust him.”

“No.”

“Neither do I.”

She looked at the parchment again.

“But if he’s lying, I’d rather know why.”

They found Adrian in the library.

The Crown Prince had apparently not slept either.

He was sitting behind a desk surrounded by books.

When Evelyn entered, he looked up.

“You found it.”

Lucien’s hand moved toward his sword.

“Found what?”

Adrian’s gaze moved to Evelyn.

“The message.”

She froze.

“You knew?”

“I suspected they would send one.”

“Who?”

Adrian closed the book in front of him.

“Whoever controls the archives.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I have.”

Lucien stepped forward.

“You’ve been hiding things.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Enough.”

Lucien’s jaw tightened.

Evelyn intervened.

“Tell us everything you know.”

Adrian was silent for a moment.

Then he stood.

“I’ve seen the archives before.”

“When?”

“In another life.”

Evelyn’s heart tightened.

“You went there?”

“Yes.”

“What did you find?”

“I don’t remember everything.”

“Convenient.”

Adrian ignored Lucien.

“But I remember the room.”

“What room?”

“The one beneath the archives.”

He walked toward a shelf.

“The first time I went there, I found records about the First Crown.”

“And?”

“I found your name.”

Evelyn stared.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian removed a book from the shelf.

“There was another name beside yours.”

He looked at Lucien.

“His.”

Lucien’s expression became unreadable.

Evelyn felt the same strange pressure in her chest that had appeared when Seraphine told her about the old archive.

“What did the record say?”

Adrian hesitated.

“That you were supposed to destroy the Crown.”

Evelyn frowned.

“And Lucien?”

“Stop you.”

Silence.

Lucien laughed quietly.

“That sounds familiar.”

Adrian looked at him.

“It wasn’t a metaphor.”

“What happened?”

“You fought.”

“Who won?”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“You.”

Her eyes widened.

“And then?”

“You erased your own memory.”

Lucien’s expression changed.

“Why?”

Adrian shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Evelyn looked down.

The fragments she’d seen the previous night suddenly felt heavier.

A white room.

A golden Crown.

Lucien beside her.

Her own voice telling him not to let them make her remember.

“What happened to him?”

Adrian looked at Lucien.

“He remembered.”

“And?”

“He killed you.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn’s fingers became cold.

Lucien didn’t move.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why are you telling us this?”

“Because that’s how the story ends.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Every time?”

Adrian nodded.

“Every time.”

Lucien’s voice was low.

“And you let it happen?”

Adrian looked away.

“I tried to stop it.”

“How?”

“I killed myself.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“What?”

“In one life, I killed myself before the war could begin.”

“And?”

“The story continued.”

“Another?”

“I killed the emperor.”

“Did it work?”

“No.”

“Then what did?”

Adrian looked at her.

“You.”

Evelyn’s stomach tightened.

“What did I do?”

“You chose him.”

She glanced at Lucien.

“And that changed the ending.”

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“But the system corrected itself.”

“What does that mean?”

“It found another way.”

“To make us fight?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked toward the palace walls.

“Then the archives aren’t just storing records.”

“No.”

“They’re storing the story.”

Adrian nodded.

“And if you enter them…”

“What?”

“You might remember everything.”

The entrance was hidden beneath the western wing.

They found it behind an old portrait of the second emperor.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

The air became colder with every step.

Evelyn held a lantern.

Lucien walked beside her.

Adrian followed several paces behind.

None of them spoke.

The deeper they went, the older the walls became.

The polished marble of the palace disappeared.

Stone replaced it.

Then brick.

Then something that didn’t look like either.

The walls were covered with strange symbols.

Evelyn stopped.

She recognized them.

Not consciously.

Her fingers moved over one of the markings.

A sudden image flashed through her mind.

She was standing in the same corridor.

But the walls were bright.

People were walking around her.

Someone was laughing.

Lucien’s voice.

“Evelyn.”

She blinked.

He was standing in front of her.

“You stopped.”

She pulled her hand away.

“I saw something.”

“What?”

“This place.”

Lucien looked at the wall.

“What did you see?”

“People.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian approached.

“You remembered.”

Evelyn glared at him.

“Don’t say that like it’s good news.”

He almost smiled.

“It’s not.”

They continued.

After several minutes, they reached a large stone door.

There was no handle.

Only a symbol.

A black bird.

Lucien looked at Evelyn.

“Do you know how to open it?”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

The moment her fingers touched the symbol, the door opened.

Adrian went pale.

“You shouldn’t be able to do that.”

Evelyn turned.

“Why?”

“Because the door only opens for the person who created it.”

Silence.

Lucien looked at her.

“You created this.”

“I don’t remember.”

“I know.”

They entered.

The room beyond was enormous.

Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling.

Thousands of books.

Hundreds of boxes.

Stone tablets.

Metal plates.

Scrolls.

Everything was labeled.

Dates.

Names.

Events.

Evelyn moved slowly.

It felt like walking through someone else’s memories.

Then she saw it.

A shelf bearing the name:

ARCLIGHT

She approached.

Lucien stopped beside her.

Adrian remained near the entrance.

“Be careful.”

Evelyn ignored him.

She pulled out the first book.

It was a family record.

Births.

Deaths.

Marriages.

Land transfers.

Then something strange.

The records began centuries earlier than the official Arclight family history.

Evelyn turned another page.

There were no names.

Only symbols.

Then one name appeared.

Aurelia.

She froze.

“Who is Aurelia?”

Adrian approached.

“I don’t know.”

Lucien looked at the page.

“Neither do I.”

Evelyn turned the page.

A drawing appeared.

A woman wearing the First Crown.

She looked exactly like Evelyn.

Not similar.

Exactly.

Evelyn dropped the book.

Lucien caught it before it hit the floor.

She stepped backward.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Evelyn.”

“That’s not me.”

The woman in the drawing smiled.

The same eyes.

The same face.

The same small scar beneath the left eyebrow.

Evelyn touched her own skin.

The scar was there.

Lucien stared at the illustration.

“When was this drawn?”

Adrian looked at the date.

“Eight hundred years ago.”

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn felt dizzy.

Eight hundred years.

She had lived less than thirty.

That wasn’t possible.

Unless…

The thought came slowly.

She had been someone else.

Aurelia.

The woman who had created the Crown.

The woman who had erased herself.

The woman who had been repeating the same life.

She looked at Lucien.

“Who were you?”

He didn’t answer.

Evelyn opened another book.

This one belonged to the Valemont family.

The first page contained a portrait.

A man stood beside Aurelia.

Evelyn’s breath stopped.

Lucien stared at the image.

The man looked like him.

The same face.

The same eyes.

The same scar on his chin.

He was holding a sword.

And beside his name was another.

Caelan Valemont.

Lucien whispered:

“That’s me.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“That’s me.”

The certainty in his voice frightened her.

A memory came.

A garden.

Aurelia laughing.

Caelan sitting beneath a tree.

Their hands intertwined.

Then another.

A battlefield.

Caelan kneeling.

Blood covering his armor.

Aurelia screaming.

Then another.

A white chamber.

The Crown.

Aurelia crying.

Caelan holding her face.

“You’ll forget me.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want you to.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t do it.”

“I have to.”

“Why?”

“Because if I remember you, they’ll use you.”

Lucien stumbled backward.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

He was breathing heavily.

“What did you see?”

“Myself.”

“As Caelan?”

He nodded.

“You?”

“Aurelia.”

They stared at each other.

The realization was too enormous to process.

They hadn’t simply met in another life.

They had been there before the empire.

Before the current kingdoms.

Before the history they knew.

They had been part of the original story.

And whatever had happened between them had shaped everything that came afterward.

Adrian approached slowly.

“I told you.”

Evelyn turned.

“You knew.”

“I knew fragments.”

“You knew enough.”

“I didn’t know this.”

She looked at him.

“Then why did you bring us here?”

“I didn’t.”

Evelyn frowned.

“The message.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I didn’t send it.”

Lucien looked toward the door.

“Then who did?”

A sound came from the darkness.

A slow clap.

Evelyn turned.

Someone stood between the shelves.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a long black coat.

His face was hidden by a hood.

He stepped into the lantern light.

Evelyn immediately recognized the symbol on his chest.

The black bird.

But there was something else.

A second symbol beneath it.

A golden crown.

The man smiled.

“You finally remembered.”

Lucien drew his sword.

“Who are you?”

The man ignored him.

His eyes remained on Evelyn.

“You took longer this time.”

Evelyn’s pulse accelerated.

“How do you know me?”

The man laughed.

“Because I was there.”

“Where?”

“When you erased yourself.”

Lucien stepped forward.

“Answer her.”

The man looked at him.

Then smiled.

“Caelan.”

Lucien froze.

Nobody had called him that.

Not in this life.

Not ever.

The man’s smile widened.

“You really don’t remember.”

Lucien raised his sword.

“I don’t care what name you use.”

“You will.”

The man lifted his hand.

The bookshelves began to shake.

Hundreds of books fell simultaneously.

Evelyn looked around.

“What are you doing?”

“Opening the archive.”

“For what?”

The floor beneath them began to glow.

A circular symbol appeared.

Evelyn recognized it immediately.

The First Crown.

The man stepped backward.

“The memories you buried are not yours anymore.”

The symbol brightened.

“They belong to everyone.”

The room exploded with light.

Evelyn screamed.

She saw everything.

Aurelia.

Caelan.

The first Crown.

The first betrayal.

The first death.

And finally—

herself standing before the Crown.

Not crying.

Not afraid.

Angry.

She was speaking to someone.

A man she couldn’t see.

“You promised.”

His voice answered.

“I changed my mind.”

Evelyn gasped.

The memory shifted.

She saw herself handing the Crown to someone.

Then heard her own voice.

“If you betray me, I’ll erase the entire system.”

The man laughed.

“You wouldn’t.”

She smiled.

“I already did.”

The memory shattered.

Evelyn collapsed.

Lucien caught her.

“Evelyn!”

She opened her eyes.

The archive was dark again.

The hooded man was gone.

Adrian was unconscious near the entrance.

Lucien was kneeling beside her.

His face was pale.

She looked at him.

“Caelan.”

His eyes widened.

“You remembered.”

“Not everything.”

“Neither did I.”

She touched his face.

A strange familiarity filled her.

Not the kind that came from months together.

Something older.

Deeper.

Something that felt like coming home to a place she had forgotten existed.

Then she saw something behind him.

A book had fallen open.

The page was illuminated by the lantern.

There was a drawing of Aurelia and Caelan standing together.

Beneath it was a sentence.

When the Crown awakens, the first betrayal will repeat.

Evelyn stared.

“What betrayal?”

Lucien looked at the page.

Neither of them noticed Adrian opening his eyes.

He stared at the book.

Then whispered:

“No.”

Evelyn turned.

“What?”

Adrian’s face was terrified.

“I remember now.”

Lucien stood.

“Remember what?”

Adrian looked at them.

“The first betrayal.”

Evelyn waited.

Adrian swallowed.

“It wasn’t yours.”

She frowned.

“Then whose was it?”

He looked toward the empty doorway.

“The emperor’s.”

A deep sound echoed beneath the floor.

Something had awakened.

And somewhere far above them, inside the palace, every bell began ringing at once.
