Chapter 18: The Forgotten King

The Void Emperor's Infinite Evolution

The chamber fell into absolute silence.

Even the underground river had stopped flowing.

Kael felt every hair on his body stand upright as an overwhelming pressure descended upon the Silent Lake. It wasn't merely powerful—it was ancient, carrying a weight that seemed capable of crushing souls.

The crimson eyes within the tunnel slowly advanced.

One after another they disappeared into the darkness, revealing they all belonged to a single colossal creature.

It emerged without a sound.

Its body resembled a dragon, yet no dragon from legend looked like this. Black scales covered its enormous frame, each one etched with crimson runes that pulsed like beating hearts. Six horns curved backward from its skull, while a tattered pair of wings dragged behind it as though they had once been magnificent before time itself had worn them away.

Despite its monstrous appearance...

Chains wrapped around every part of its body.

Golden chains.

The same chains Kael had seen surrounding the throne during his evolution.

His breathing caught.

The throne...

The dragon's crimson eyes narrowed.

"So."

"It remembers."

The System erupted with notifications.

Warning!

Unknown Entity Identified.

Authority Conflict Detected.

Identity Locked.

Access Denied.

Kael frowned.

"Authority?"

The dragon laughed.

"You still know nothing."

Its voice echoed inside his mind instead of his ears.

"A child holding the key to a kingdom."

Lyra stepped forward.

"You will not touch him."

The dragon's gaze shifted toward her.

"Guardian."

"I wondered if you still existed."

"You should have remained sealed."

"I tried."

The dragon smiled.

"But seals weaken."

Kael looked between them.

"You know each other?"

Lyra answered without taking her eyes off the dragon.

"We fought together."

A pause.

"And later..."

"We fought each other."

The dragon chuckled.

"She still refuses to admit I was right."

"I refuse because you were wrong."

"Were we?"

The dragon lowered its head.

"If I was wrong..."

"Then why did the Sovereigns fall?"

Silence answered him.

For the first time since meeting Lyra...

Kael saw uncertainty in her expression.

The dragon noticed it too.

"You see?"

"The truth survives longer than lies."

Kael's mind raced.

"Sovereigns?"

"The Origin Sea..."

"The throne..."

None of it made sense.

The dragon slowly turned toward him.

"You chose the Nameless Path."

"I did."

"Good."

Its answer surprised Kael.

"You aren't trying to kill me?"

The dragon laughed again.

"If I wanted you dead..."

"You would never have awakened."

Kael couldn't argue with that.

The creature's presence alone made breathing difficult.

Lyra's voice became cold.

"Enough."

"He isn't ready."

The dragon ignored her.

Instead, it looked directly into Kael's eyes.

"Tell me."

"Why did you choose the hidden path?"

Kael remained silent for several moments.

Finally he answered honestly.

"I didn't want a path someone else had already walked."

The dragon stared at him.

Then...

It smiled.

Not cruelly.

Not mockingly.

With approval.

"Excellent."

"The Void does not need followers."

"It creates pioneers."

Lyra sighed quietly.

"You're filling his head with dangerous ideas."

"No."

The dragon replied.

"I'm reminding him that evolution isn't imitation."

"It is transcendence."

Kael felt those words settle deep within him.

The dragon raised one enormous claw.

A single black scale detached from its body and floated toward Kael.

Lyra's expression immediately changed.

"No!"

But she was too late.

The scale gently landed in Kael's palm.

It was warm.

Almost alive.

The System activated.

Unknown Artifact Detected.

Attempting Analysis...

Analysis Failed.

Authority Required.

The dragon spoke.

"Keep it."

"One day..."

"When you learn the truth..."

"You will decide whether to destroy me."

"...or free me."

Kael looked up sharply.

"Free you?"

The dragon slowly lifted one of its forelegs.

The golden chains tightened.

Only then did Kael notice they weren't simply wrapped around the dragon.

They pierced directly through its flesh.

Every movement caused fresh blood to drip onto the stone floor.

"You've been imprisoned."

"For a very long time."

The dragon nodded.

"So long..."

"...that even I have forgotten what sunlight feels like."

Kael unconsciously tightened his grip on the scale.

Something about the creature's eyes...

They didn't resemble a monster's.

They resembled someone carrying endless regret.

Lyra walked beside Kael.

"Do not pity him."

"He has destroyed worlds."

The dragon didn't deny it.

"I have."

"I've also saved more than you'll ever know."

Neither spoke again.

The silence between them carried centuries of history.

Finally the dragon turned away.

"Our time is over."

"The prison weakens whenever I awaken."

"I cannot remain."

It looked back at Kael one final time.

"Grow stronger."

"Question everything."

"And never trust anyone who claims history belongs to the victors."

"The oldest lies..."

"...are usually written by the survivors."

Its massive body slowly dissolved into crimson mist.

The countless eyes disappeared one after another until only darkness remained within the tunnel.

The pressure vanished.

The frozen lake melted.

The cavern returned to normal.

Kael looked at the black scale still resting in his hand.

"Who was he?"

Lyra remained silent for a long time.

When she finally answered, her voice was barely above a whisper.

"He was once called..."

"...the First Void Sovereign."

Kael's pupils contracted.

"The first..."

Lyra nodded.

"And if what he said is true..."

She looked at Kael with an expression filled with both hope and concern.

"...then you may become the second."

A sudden chime interrupted the moment.

Kael looked toward the tunnel leading upward.
