Scorched leaves clung to their branches, edges glowing faintly as if the night itself resisted surrendering to dawn.

Smoke curled lazily, choking the air with the acrid scent of char and blood.

Aeron’s chest rose and fell in jagged rhythm, each breath scraping against his ribs like shards of glass.

His dagger — once sleek and tempered — was cracked along the edge, glowing faintly from the fire he’d forced through it again and again.

His uniform hung in tatters, blackened with soot and smeared with blood, both his own and the beasts’.

And yet, the golden-eyed monster still stood.

Its breaths came ragged now, chest heaving, blood dripping in dark lines down its muscled flank.

Yet its eyes — twin suns forged in a god’s furnace — burned with undiminished fury.

Its presence filled the grove, heavier than smoke, older than time.

Aeron wiped sweat from his brow with the back of his trembling hand.

His lips curled faintly, a flicker of defiance despite the weakness gnawing at him.

“Persistent bastard, aren’t you?”

The creature’s answer was a guttural roar.

It lunged, claws extended, jaws flashing with ivory death.

Aeron did not retreat.

He bent low, flame surging from his palm, and thrust himself forward to meet the strike.

Steel met claw, fire clashed against raw power.

The ground cracked beneath the collision, a ring of force sending embers scattering in every direction.

The impact hurled Aeron back.

His boots dug trenches in the earth as he skidded across ash.

His arms quivered violently, his lungs screamed for air.

[System Notice: Stamina critically low.]

He gritted his teeth, forcing a steady breath.

“I know.”

The dagger trembled in his grip, his body begging to collapse.

But his gray eyes stayed locked on the beast, sharp and unyielding.

He wasn’t fighting to conquer.

He was fighting to last.

The golden monster stalked forward, ash curling around its paws like mist.

Aeron tightened his stance, even as his vision swam.

Every nerve in his body screamed surrender — but his spirit was iron.

And then—

The horizon broke.

The first light of dawn pierced the canopy, shafts of gold slashing through smoke and shadow.

Warmth spilled across the ruined grove.

The beast halted.

With a final guttural snarl, it turned.

Its massive frame dissolved into smoke, fading like a phantom into the depths of Emberwood.

One heartbeat it was there, suffocating in its presence.

The next, only silence.

The grove exhaled.

Aeron staggered, every muscle slackening.

He dropped to one knee, his dagger sinking into the dirt to support his weight.

The air stank of burnt earth, of ash and charred bone.

His body was a map of wounds — shallow bites along his arms, bruises blooming black beneath torn fabric, a searing burn across his shoulder where the beast’s claws had grazed.

And still, he lived.

A soft chime rang in his ears.

Aeron let out a long, ragged breath, lips twitching faintly.

“Hunter’s instinct,” he murmured.

“Fitting.”

His eyes dropped to the Beast Core, warm and pulsating faintly with golden light, as if it were still alive.

The glow lit his palm, throbbing in time with his heartbeat.

Dangerous.

Valuable.

A token of survival.

He slipped it into his pocket and pushed to his feet, though his legs trembled like brittle twigs.

Every step felt heavier than stone, yet he forced himself forward, shoulders squared, chin high.

“…Not bad for the first night,” he muttered.

The forest had tested him.

And he had endured.

Crownshade Academy – Morning

By the time Aeron crossed the threshold of the Academy gates, the sun had fully risen.

The sprawling courtyards were already alive — students yawning as they trudged toward morning drills, instructors barking orders, the smell of breakfast drifting faintly through open windows.

But two pairs of eyes had been waiting.

Lyra sat on the dormitory steps, her gray hair catching strands of sunlight like silver threads.

Her amber eyes widened the moment she saw him.

He was a wreck — soot streaking his jaw, his blazer torn and singed, burns across his skin.

He looked like he’d returned from the depths of war.

Her ears twitched violently, tail curling tight against her leg as she sprang to her feet.

“A-Aeron!

Where have you—”

Her words faltered when she truly took in the state of him. Read this novel at novelping.com for the best experience.

Relief warred with anger, her chest tightening painfully.

Aeron gave a faint, almost careless smile.

“Training.”

“That’s not training,” Lyra snapped, her voice trembling between frustration and fear.

“That’s nearly getting yourself—” She stopped herself, the word choking in her throat.

Dead.

She couldn’t bring herself to say it.

His gaze softened, the faintest shadow of warmth breaking his otherwise cold mask.

“But I came back, didn’t I?”

Her amber eyes glistened.

She wanted to scold him more, to strike him for being so reckless.

Instead, she simply stared, her heart hammering, the words stuck in her throat.

From the opposite side of the courtyard, a clear voice cut through.

“Aeron!”

Aira Everdon strode toward them, her pristine uniform immaculate, her long brown hair gleaming in the light.

She slowed when she reached him, her confident smile faltering as she drank in his battered state.

“You…” Her brows furrowed.

“What in the gods’ names did you do to yourself?”

“Training,” Aeron repeated evenly.

Aira’s lips pressed thin.

She crossed her arms, glaring at him with a mixture of worry and annoyance.

“You can’t just vanish for a night and come back looking like you fought an army.”

Lyra’s ears twitched as she glanced at Aira.

“I-I told him the same thing…”

Aira’s eyes flicked toward her, narrowing for just a heartbeat before she schooled her features back into a pleasant smile.

“How thoughtful of you.”

Lyra’s tail puffed slightly, her nerves sparking.

Turning back to Aeron, Aira stepped closer, voice softening.

“You need to rest.

Come, I’ll—”

“I’ll help him,” Lyra interrupted before she realized the words had left her mouth.

Both Aeron and Aira blinked at her.

Lyra’s face flushed, but she didn’t back down.

Her ears tilted back, tail swishing nervously, but her amber eyes held determination.

Aira tilted her head, a sly smile curving her lips though her gaze was sharp.

“Oh?

Bold of you.”

Aeron sighed, brushing past both before their rivalry could spark further.

“I can walk fine.”

But neither girl left his side.

One fell in step at his left, the other at his right, their shoulders nearly brushing his.

As though by silent agreement, they refused to leave him unattended.

Aeron said nothing.

But unseen, the faintest smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
