Emberwood Grove – Deeper Paths
The Emberwood wasn’t quiet.
Leaves shifted overhead though there was no wind, crimson and copper shimmering like slow flames.
Mana hummed faintly, every breath of air thick with a metallic taste.
Strange insects clicked in the underbrush, while unseen birds gave sharp, eerie cries before falling silent again.
And beneath it all, a low growl echoed far away, rolling through the soil like a warning.
Lyra’s ears twitched constantly, her steps small but quick.
Her tail brushed against her leg, stiff and betraying nerves she couldn’t mask.
She tried to keep her breathing even, but Aeron—walking just a half step ahead—could hear the small tremors in her chest.
Aira walked at the other side of him, sharp eyes scanning the trees, her expression calm but alert.
Her pace was steady, almost casual, though her hand lingered near the hem of her coat where her frost spells gathered quickest.
Every so often she shot Aeron a sideways glance, as if to check whether he’d react at all to the forest’s oppressive weight.
He didn’t.
Aeron’s gray gaze swept forward, cool and focused.
His senses were spread thin, his body tuned to every shift in mana.
The System pulsed at the edge of his vision:
[Quest – Whispers Beneath the Canopy]
Status: In Progress
Objective 1: Locate the source of the mana disturbance.
He exhaled slowly.
“Stay sharp.”
It came sudden.
A blur of crimson tore from the underbrush, heat radiating in waves.
The creature’s body was half-cat, half-serpent, scales rippling like molten embers.
Each step left the ground scorched, its mane of fiery tendrils sparking in the dark.
Its maw snapped open, teeth gleaming like glowing iron.
“Emberfang,” Aeron murmured.
Lyra gasped and stepped back, her claws twitching against her palms, but Aeron was already in motion.
“Lyra—left flank.
Distract it.
Aira—circle wide.” His voice cut through the tension like steel.
Neither girl argued.
Lyra swallowed her nerves, raising her trembling hands.
The ground beneath the Emberfang rippled as earthen spikes thrust upward, forcing it to leap aside.
Aira darted opposite, her red blazer catching a flash of light as she summoned a wave of condensed frost, forcing the beast to skid back.
Aeron walked forward calmly, Void energy stirring around his hand like black smoke.
The Emberfang’s molten eyes fixed on him.
It roared, flames spilling from its throat.
Aeron’s gray eyes didn’t waver.
“Too loud,” he muttered, and flicked his fingers.
[Void Seal – Pulse Disrupt]
A wave of darkness shattered the flames, swallowing the roar mid-sound.
The beast reeled, momentarily stunned.
“Now,” Aeron ordered.
Lyra’s earth spikes shot again, pinning its hind legs.
Aira’s frost lashed across its flank, ice hissing against heated scales.
Aeron stepped in.
His palm pressed against the beast’s head.
[Void Latch]
The Emberfang convulsed, its mana unraveling.
Silence followed—save for the faint hiss of cooling embers.
Lyra panted, chest heaving, her hands trembling from the spell’s recoil.
Her wolf ears flattened, then rose as she looked at Aeron—her gray eyes wide.
“Y-you… you didn’t even flinch…”
Aeron shook his hand once, dismissing the last wisp of Void energy.
“It was weak.”
Aira smirked, resting a hand on her hip.
“Weak?
It nearly flattened her.” She tilted her chin toward Lyra, her tone amused.
“I held it,” Lyra muttered, cheeks pink, her tail swishing despite her attempt to look stern.
“You did well,” Aeron said simply, his voice even but carrying weight.
Lyra blinked at him, stunned into stillness.
A slow, shy smile tugged at her lips.
Her tail wagged once before she caught herself and pressed it stiff against her leg.
“Th-thank you…”
Aira noticed instantly—the faint blush, the shine in Lyra’s eyes.
Something inside her pricked sharp and hot.
Jealousy.
It was ridiculous, unwanted, but it coiled in her chest all the same.
Her lips curved into a playful smirk.
She tossed her hair lightly, eyes narrowing at Aeron.
“Well then.
I suppose I’ll just have to work harder next time… until even you have to compliment me.”
Aeron turned his flat stare on her, unimpressed.
Aira only laughed softly, unbothered, though her pulse quickened at the attention.
Lyra fumbled with her braid, trying to compose herself, but her ears betrayed her—flicking each time Aeron’s gaze brushed her way.
As the Emberfang’s body cooled, a faint shimmer rose from its chest.
A pulsing orb—red and gold—rolled free, glowing with inner fire.
“A beast core,” Aeron murmured, crouching.
The System chimed immediately.
[Item Acquired: Emberfang Core – Mid-Grade]
Can be consumed to enhance physical attributes or stored for crafting.
Aeron turned it in his palm, its warmth pressing into his skin, alive with power.
Lyra’s eyes widened.
“Th-that’s… valuable.
More than I’ve ever seen.”
“Too valuable for Division C students to flaunt,” Aira added dryly.
“If we’re caught, they’ll confiscate it.
And maybe worse.”
Aeron slipped it into his coat without hesitation.
His expression didn’t waver.
“Then we won’t be caught.”
Neither girl argued further, though Lyra bit her lip, her tail twitching with nerves.
The quest marker glowed faintly in Aeron’s vision, pulling them deeper.
The trees thickened, crimson leaves blotting out what little sky remained.
Strange glyphs burned faintly on the trunks, glowing like old scars left by claws dripping with fire.
The air grew hotter, thicker.
Lyra drifted closer to Aeron, unconsciously matching his steps.
He didn’t react, which somehow made her pulse race harder.
Aira noticed, her smirk sharpening.
She sidled closer on Aeron’s other side, leaning in just enough to make her point.
“Careful, Lyra.
If you stick that close, you’ll trip him.”
Lyra’s ears shot up.
“I-I wasn’t—!” She stopped, realizing how flustered she sounded.
Her blush deepened.
Aeron cut through their squabbling with a flat tone.
“Focus.”
But even as he said it, he felt the warmth of their presence at his sides—the nervous devotion of Lyra, the teasing sparks of Aira.
A strange balance.
And, though he would never admit it aloud, a comfort.
The System chimed again.
[Objective Update: Disturbance Approaching – 300 meters ahead.]
Aeron’s lips curved faintly.
“Finally.”
They pushed through until the grove opened into a clearing.
The air was heavy with heat.
The ground was blackened as though fire had licked it raw.
At the center stood a stone monolith, cracked and glowing faintly with runes that pulsed out of rhythm, as if the stone itself had a broken heartbeat.
Lyra’s ears flattened.
Her voice was small.
“W-what is that…?”
Aira narrowed her eyes, scanning its surface.
“Something not in the academy’s records.
Which means we shouldn’t be the first ones seeing it.”
Aeron stepped forward, his expression unreadable.
The System screen flashed violently across his vision.
[Hidden Quest Triggered – Emberwood’s Secret]
Objective: Investigate the Monolith.
Warning: Danger Level – Unknown.
The monolith gave a low hum—deep, resonant, like the pulse of a slumbering beast.
Lyra shivered.
She moved closer to Aeron without thinking, her hand brushing his sleeve.
“A-Aeron…”
He didn’t pull away.
His voice was calm, quiet.
“Stay close.”
Aira caught the exchange, her lips tightening before she forced a smirk.
“Don’t cling too tightly, Lyra.
If you panic, I’ll be the one dragging you out.”
“Sh-shut up!” Lyra whispered, her face crimson.
Aeron’s gaze remained locked on the monolith, but a faint glimmer of amusement touched his eyes.
From the shadows of the grove, more roars began to rise—low, guttural, and too many to count.
The ground quivered beneath their feet.
Lyra’s breath hitched.
Aira’s frost flared around her fingertips.
Aeron’
s gray eyes glinted fai ntly with anticipation.
“Stay behind me,” he said, calm as stone.
The clearing shook as the first shadow lunged into view.
And Emberwood itself seemed to roar with it.
