Emberwood Grove

The clearing reeked of ash and scorched soil.

Smoke curled from broken trunks, the smell of burned resin biting at their throats.Full novel: The Void Prince’s Harem — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The faint glow of dying embers clung stubbornly to the ground, painting everything in a dim, ominous crimson.

Aeron stood at the center, chest rising and falling steadily, though sweat rolled freely down his jaw.

His uniform clung to him, torn across the sleeve where the Emberfang’s claw had grazed him.

Even through his calm expression, his shoulders sagged with fatigue.

Behind him, Lyra hesitated, then touched his arm lightly.

Her fingers trembled, claws barely extended as though bracing for him to vanish.

“You… you really are okay?”

He glanced at her.

Her wide silver eyes reflected both fear and awe, ears drooped low yet her tail twitched nervously, betraying her heart.

Aeron gave a faint nod.

“Tired.

But fine.”

She exhaled, relief loosening her shoulders, her tail swishing once before she stilled it in embarrassment.

Aira approached, arms crossed, frost still faint on her fingertips.

The icy aura around her made the scorched ground hiss faintly.

“You’re reckless.” Her voice was sharp, but her eyes lingered on him too long, unwilling to look away.

“One mistake, and you’d have been ash.”

Aeron smirked faintly.

“But I didn’t.”

That answer only made Aira huff, turning away with a flick of her brown hair.

Why does he never lose that composure?

A low hum vibrated beneath their feet.

All three froze.

The broken base of the monolith flickered again.

The runes that should have died with the Emberfang glowed once more—faint, hesitant, like a heartbeat on the edge of failing but not quite gone.

Lyra’s ears flattened against her hair.

“It… it’s not finished?”

“No.” Aeron’s gaze sharpened, his senses prickling.

“This wasn’t the source.

Just a guardian.”

The ground split with a jagged crack.

Thin veins of light spread from the monolith’s base into the earth, spiderwebbing outward like glowing scars.

Each line pulsed once, twice, then dimmed—but not fully.

The forest air turned heavier, charged with something old.

The System chimed.

[New Quest Unlocked: Emberwood’s Heart]

Objective: Investigate the deeper anomaly beneath the monolith.

Warning: Threat level exceeds current capacity.

Aeron’s jaw tightened.

So it goes deeper.

Figures.

“We go down, then.

Now.

Before it grows again.”

“No,” Aeron said flatly.

Both girls blinked at him.

Lyra tilted her head timidly, tail curling around her leg.

“But… i-if we don’t—”

“We’re drained,” Aeron interrupted, his tone calm but edged with iron.

He glanced at Aira.

“You used too much ice.

You’re already pale.” His eyes flicked to Lyra.

“You can barely keep your earth steady.

And I…” He flexed his fists, the ache still raw in his arms.

“If I push again now, my body will break before the enemy does.”

Silence stretched between them, broken only by the faint hum of the monolith.

Even the wind dared not stir.

For once, Aira didn’t argue.

Because deep down, she knew he was right.

Lyra’s tail loosened its nervous coil, her gaze softening.

“Then… what do we do?”

Aeron looked at the glowing veins, then back to them, his voice low and steady.

“We come back.

Prepared.”

The air quieted, the forest seeming to listen.

Lyra stepped closer, brushing dirt from her torn uniform, then offered a hesitant smile.

“You… always think ahead.”

Aeron raised a brow.

“That surprises you?”

She flushed, ears twitching.

“N-no.

It’s just… no one ever cared about my limits before.” Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“Thank you.”

Aeron paused, then gave the faintest smile, warm despite his exhaustion.

“Get used to it.”

Lyra’s chest fluttered.

Her tail wagged once before she stilled it again, flustered by her own betrayal of joy.

Aira watched from the side, her lips pressing thin.

Jealousy stirred—but it wasn’t sharp anymore.

It was recognition.

If he becomes who I think he will… he won’t belong to just one of us.

And for the first time, she didn’t reject the thought.

They moved carefully out of the clearing, stepping over cracked earth and the corpses of lesser beasts.

The forest around them had grown unnaturally still—no chirping insects, no rustling brush.

The Emberwood was holding its breath.

Aeron didn’t like it.

Something deeper is watching.

“Do you think… it’s evil?”

“Not evil,” Aeron said after a pause.

“Just… older.

Hungry.”

Her shiver said enough.

Back at the Academy

The return trip was slower than their entrance.

The shadows of the Emberwood pressed close, as if following them to the border.

When the faint spires of Crownshade Academy came into view at last, both girls sighed in relief.

At the gates, patrol mages eyed them suspiciously, their gazes lingering on Aeron’s soot-stained uniform and the faint frost clinging to Aira’s hair.

Whispers stirred—students didn’t usually emerge from Emberwood burned and bloodied without reason.

Aeron ignored them, striding forward without a word, though his sharp eyes noted every glance.

Rumors will spread.

Let them.

Back in Division C’s dormitory hall, Lyra paused outside her door.

She fiddled with the edge of her sleeve before looking up at Aeron.

Her tail swayed uncertainly.

“Goodnight,” she whispered.

Then, almost too soft to hear: “…Thank you again.”

He inclined his head.

“Rest.”

Her face lit faintly red as she slipped inside.

Aira lingered longer, her stance rigid but her tone softer than usual.

“Don’t think this is over, Aeron Blackthorn.

Tomorrow, you’re explaining everything.”

“Tomorrow,” he agreed simply.

She held his gaze for a heartbeat longer before finally turning toward Division A’s wing, her steps slow.

Aeron entered his own room at last.

The moment the door shut, he exhaled slowly, lowering onto the bed.

His arms trembled faintly from strain, muscles screaming protest.

“System.”

The blue screen appeared at once, flooding the dim room with its glow.

Aeron leaned back, staring at the faint glow.

His lips curved slightly.

“So… it wasn’t the end after all.”

The tired weight in his bones should have dragged him into sleep.

But instead, resolve burned hotter in his chest.

He closed his eyes, whispering to himself.

“I’ll b e ready.”

And outside, unseen in the night, a shadow shifted in the Emberwood—something vast, its eyes glowing faint in the dark, watching, waiting.
