The alleyway was silent.
A greasy scrap of newspaper whipped up in the wind, plastering against a rusted chain-link fence with a soft rustle.
Everyone watched Leon's raised arm, their eyes following the line of his pointing finger toward a dilapidated apartment building across the street.
Rows of dark, hollow windows stared back like empty sockets in a city of the dead. There was no sign of life.
"Are you sure?"
Rick's voice was low, strained with confusion. He trusted Leon's instincts, but he wasn't about to follow a blind lead into a potential death trap. One wrong move here meant the end of the group.
Daryl remained silent, narrowing his eyes to scan the facade for any trace of movement. He found nothing but weathered paint and grime.
Leon didn't offer an explanation. He didn't need to.
Through the filter of his Hawkeye Vision, a pinhead-sized stain of dried, dark red blood on a third-floor windowsill was magnified hundreds of times. He could see the splatter pattern clearly.
When Merle had escaped, he had used his severed stump to steady himself against that exact frame.
"He's right there," Leon said.
He lowered his hand, his tone flat and decisive. He stepped out into the street without waiting for a response, his mind a stream of cold calculation.
He knew the history of this place. Merle hadn't died here; he'd moved on. The people entrenched in this building were the Vatos—a group guarding a nursing home. They weren't evil, but they were territorial and xenophobic.
They were the perfect whetstone to sharpen his team's edge and solidify his own authority.
Rick looked at Leon's back, glanced at a hesitant Daryl, and gritted his teeth.
"Follow him! Stay alert!"
Glenn and T-Dog exchanged tense looks and fell into line. Daryl brought up the rear, crossbow hugged to his chest, his steps light and his body coiled like a spring.
The five-man squad crossed the empty asphalt and reached the entrance. The iron gate was slightly ajar. Inside, a narrow, dim corridor smelled of damp mold and, faintly, cooked food.
"I'll go first," Glenn whispered.
He was the most agile and the best scout they had. He crouched low, moving like a cat as he slipped into the shadows of the hallway.
Rick followed closely, his Colt Python drawn and leveled at the floor.
Just as Leon moved to join them, the trap snapped shut.
Two figures lunged from the darkness on either side of the corridor. They moved with practiced speed, ignoring Rick entirely to pounce on Glenn.
"Ugh... ah!"
Glenn's cry was cut short as he was tackled to the floor. A rough hand clamped over his mouth before he could struggle, and he was dragged toward a door at the end of the hall.
"Glenn!" Rick roared, raising his revolver.
The kidnappers were too fast. They hauled Glenn through the doorway and slammed the door shut before Rick could get a clear shot.
"Son of a bitch!" Daryl lunged forward, ready to kick the door in.
"Don't move!"
A raspy growl echoed from above. Every head jerked upward.
A burly man in a tank top leaned over the second-floor railing. He had a shaved head and a hard stare, a shotgun pointed directly at Rick and Daryl.
Footsteps thudded from both ends of the corridor. More armed men emerged from the shadows, boxing the four men into the narrow space. They were completely surrounded.
The door Glenn had disappeared through opened again. A man with slicked-back hair and a bored expression walked out, flipping a butterfly knife between his fingers.
Two lackeys followed, holding Glenn firmly. A dagger was pressed hard against the boy's throat. Glenn was pale, his body shaking so hard he seemed to forget how to breathe.
"Looks like you wandered into the wrong place, fellas."
The man gestured with his chin. This was Guillermo, the leader of the pack.
"We mean no harm," Rick said, forcing his voice to remain steady. He slowly raised his hands. "We're just looking for someone. Release my friend and we'll leave."
"Looking for someone?" Guillermo sneered.
He walked up to Rick and tapped the policeman's cheek with the back of his knife blade.
"There's no one here for you to find. Drop your weapons on the ground."
His eyes turned cold.
"Then maybe I'll consider letting your friend suffer a little less."
The air in the corridor felt like it was about to ignite. T-Dog went white; sweat beaded on Rick's forehead. Handing over their guns was a death sentence, but if they didn't, Glenn was gone.
"Fuck you!"
Daryl's patience snapped. His eyes were bloodshot as he leveled his crossbow at Guillermo.
"I'm counting to three. You let him go, or I put a hole through your head."
Guillermo raised an eyebrow and laughed. "Seems like you haven't figured out the situation, redneck."
He snapped his fingers.
Two distinct clicks of rifles being cocked echoed from the upper floors. Rick and Daryl felt their hearts sink.
They were being watched from the high ground. They had walked straight into a kill box.
Guillermo's smile widened. He liked the control. He liked watching the realization of defeat wash over their faces.
"Now, do you still want to count to three?"
Daryl's face flushed a deep, angry red. His knuckles were white against the crossbow's grip, but he didn't move. He knew he couldn't beat a bullet.
Rick closed his eyes, overwhelmed by a sense of powerlessness. The negotiation had failed. They were fish on a chopping block.
In the suffocating silence, Leon moved.
He hadn't said a word. He didn't make any sudden, threatening gestures. He simply looked up.
Hawkeye Vision activated.
The world slowed into data points. He analyzed the shotgunner's rapid heartbeat and the stiff, nervous grip on his weapon. He noted the rifleman on the third floor, locked onto Daryl's head.
He calculated Guillermo's stance and the exact angle of the blade against Glenn's carotid artery.
A perfect attack plan formed in his mind, precise to the millisecond. Leon didn't believe in negotiating with rabid dogs. You simply broke their teeth.
He moved.
To the others, it was a blur. The silver Desert Eagle was in his hand before anyone could blink.
The suppressed shots were barely audible—just two muffled thuds.
The shotgunner on the second floor felt a massive force shatter his wrist. His gun spun away as he let out a choked groan, his hand dangling at an impossible angle.
Simultaneously, the rifleman on the third floor felt his weapon's wooden stock explode into splinters. The shockwave sent him reeling, his palms shredded by debris.
In an instant, the high-ground advantage vanished.
Guillermo's smug expression froze. The corridor plunged into a daze as the gang struggled to process what had just happened.
Leon didn't give them the chance.
He moved with a speed that defied human reaction time. Before Guillermo could even register the loss of his gunmen, Leon was on him.
Guillermo saw a palm flying toward his face.
Crack.
With a sharp hand-chop, Leon broke Guillermo's wrist. The butterfly knife clattered to the concrete.
Leon pivoted in the same motion. The Desert Eagle—still warm from the muzzle—was pressed firmly against Guillermo's temple.
From the draw to the neutralization, the entire sequence took less than three seconds.
The situation had completely reversed.
A heavy silence filled the hall. Behind Guillermo, the two men holding Glenn were paralyzed. The bravado had been replaced by a raw, visceral fear. Their hands shook so violently the knives rattled.
Rick and Daryl stood frozen, mouths agape. The man who had just been acting invincible was now being held like a helpless chick.
Leon looked at the terrified crowd, his eyes cold and empty of emotion.
"Now," he said, his voice cutting through the silence like an ice pick. "We can have a proper talk."
