The faint light of early morning pierced through the mist lingering over the quarry. It brought no hope; instead, it laid bare the purgatory of the previous night. The smells of gunpowder, blood, rot, and burnt plastic mixed into a thick, nauseating stench that clung to the back of the throat.

Survivors moved like sleepwalkers through the ruins. They dragged the remains of walkers into piles for burning, their movements mechanical and their eyes hollow. The gunfire and roars of the night had drained the last of their spirit.

Leon sat on the bed of a pickup truck, methodically cleaning his rifle with an oiled cloth. He disassembled, wiped, and reassembled every part with practiced focus. The cold touch of metal helped settle his thoughts. He needed the distraction; otherwise, the memory of Amy's trembling, Carol's dead eyes, and the guilt on Rick's face would consume him.

"Damn it," Leon cursed under his breath.

He saw no appeal in leadership. It meant endless worry, constant responsibility, and eventually, a knife in the back. Rick was the perfect example. Leon just wanted to be a quiet observer—fight monsters, protect his circle, and collect his rewards.

Footsteps approached from behind—steady, yet carrying a hint of hesitation. Leon didn't turn around.

"Good morning, Rick."

Rick walked to the side of the truck. His face was rugged, masked by exhaustion and bloodshot eyes. He looked at the rifle in Leon's hands, which gleamed with a chilling luster.

"Leon... thank you for last night," Rick said, his voice hoarse. "If it weren't for you, we..."

"We would all be dead," Leon replied flatly. He clicked the magazine back into place. "Don't thank me. I'm part of this too."

Rick fell silent. He adjusted the brim of his sheriff's hat as if the gesture could lend him a shred of strength.

"No, it's not the same." Rick stared intensely at him. "I thought I could protect them, but I don't have that ability. You're the one who can lead these people to survive, Leon. I'm asking you to take charge."

The words were like a boulder thrown into stagnant water. In the shadow of a nearby truck, a sturdy figure stiffened. Shane had been leaning against a tire, preparing to find water, when the offer smashed into his ears. His fists clenched, his knuckles turning white. Jealousy burned in his heart, yet he couldn't refute the logic. He had seen Leon command and slaughter like a god.

Leon stopped cleaning his firearm and finally looked at Rick. Then, he smiled.

"Rick, are you joking?"

"I'm not," Rick said seriously.

"Be the leader?" Leon leaned back against the truck bed, his posture lazy. "Think about finding food every day? Distributing supplies? Managing petty fights and listening to people talk behind my back? Come on. I'm eighteen. I just want to live peacefully with Amy and Andrea."

His gaze crossed Rick's shoulder. In the distance, Amy and Andrea were sitting with Carol and Sophia. Amy was clumsily comforting the girl, the sunlight catching her golden hair. Leon's expression softened.

"You see, Rick. I fight only to protect the people I care about."

Leon looked back at Rick, the smile vanishing. His eyes were sharp and clear.

"And you've got it wrong. This team needs a symbol—a spiritual pillar. Someone like you. An upright, kind sheriff who puts everyone first. You don't need to be the best fighter. You need to stand in front of everyone and tell them that as long as they unite, there is hope."

Leon pointed at himself. "Me? I only know how to kill. If I were the leader, half the people would be driven crazy in three days, and the other half would be plotting to kill me."

Rick was stunned. He hadn't considered it from that angle. "Then I... we..."

"You be the leader and maintain the stability," Leon said, his voice powerful and steady. "I will be the shield. You guide the direction, and I'll clear the obstacles. You protect everyone; I'll take care of the monsters who want to hurt us."

He patted Rick's shoulder, which was trembling slightly from the shock of the realization. "We each perform our duties. That's how we survive."

In the shadows, Shane remained frozen. His jealousy and anger receded, replaced by a complete, incomprehensible shock. He refused? Power, awe, and the crown of the camp—Leon had pushed it away as if it were nothing. Shane's "law of the jungle" felt suddenly ridiculous.

Rick looked at Leon for a long moment, seeing him clearly for the first time. He nodded heavily, a new determination replacing his self-reproach.

"I understand. Leader and Guardian."

Rick turned and left, his back straightening as he walked. Leon leaped down from the pickup but didn't head for Amy. Instead, he walked straight toward the shadow of the truck where Shane was hiding.

Shane stood up straight as Leon approached, his eyes dodging and his expression unnatural. Leon didn't speak; he just took an unopened bottle of water from his pouch and handed it over. Shane hesitated before taking it.

"Your shotgun worked well last night," Leon said.

Shane unscrewed the cap and took a long gulp, offering no reply.

"I heard you and Rick have known each other since you were kids," Leon continued, leaning against the tire. "Partners for over a decade."

Shane's grip on the bottle tightened. "So what?"

"Nothing," Leon said softly. "I just think that in this world, having a brother you grew up with still alive by your side is more precious than anything else. Gold, women, power—you can find those again. But some things, once broken, stay broken."

Leon turned his head, his dark eyes looking quietly at Shane. There was no judgment, only a terrifying calm.

"Shane, you're a warrior. The team needs you, and Rick needs his brother. Hold tight to what truly belongs to you. Don't trade a diamond for a stone on the side of the road, or you'll end up with nothing."

Leon turned and walked away. He didn't mention Lori. He didn't have to. Every word had been a precise scalpel, dissecting the rot in Shane's heart.

In the sunlight, Leon reached Amy. She stood up immediately, wiping a streak of dust from his cheek with gentle, cool fingers. Leon held her hand, feeling the warmth of her palm. They looked at each other and smiled, the noise and blood of the world falling away.

In the shadows, Shane watched them. He looked down at the water bottle, Leon's words echoing in his mind. His eyes became deep and complex, filled with a sudden, wavering reflection.
