Slap!

The sound was like a red-hot iron poker piercing the eardrums of the camp.

Arguments, discussions, even the sound of breathing seemed to be sucked dry in an instant. The tense atmosphere by the campfire was torn apart by this sudden explosion of cowardice.

Carol's frail body fell to the dirt. She clutched her face as a streak of blood seeped from the corner of her mouth. Her daughter, Sophia, froze for a heartbeat before bursting into heart-wrenching wails.

"Mom!"

Ed's chest heaved. The humiliation he had suffered from Shane earlier had curdled into a despicable rage, now poured onto the only people he felt he could still control.

He didn't stop at the slap. He lifted a heavy, dirty work boot, aiming directly at the abdomen of the woman curled on the ground. He was going to kick her with everything he had.

"Stop!" Rick shouted.

Rick instinctively lunged forward, but someone was faster.

Shane.

The man who had been numbing himself with alcohol was suddenly ignited. The nameless fire suppressed by Rick's return and Leon's presence finally found its outlet. Shane sprang from his seat, knocking over a stump with a dull thud. His eyes were bloodshot, the veins in his neck bulging.

If Shane reached him, Ed wouldn't just be bruised. He would be broken.

But as Shane's muscles tensed for the first step, a shadow swept past him.

It wasn't a run. It was a displacement too fast for the eye to track.

One millisecond, Leon was sitting peacefully with Amy. The next, he was a ghost standing behind Ed.

It was so fast that Shane's police-trained vision only caught a blurred afterimage. Most of the camp didn't even realize Leon had moved until they heard the sound of bone and muscle tightening.

Ed's foot froze in mid-air. The grimace on his face turned into a look of incomprehensible horror.

A hand—not particularly thick, but as hard as iron pincers—reached out and clamped onto Ed's neck. With an effortless, unmatched force, Leon lifted the 160-pound man completely off the ground.

Ed's feet dangled.

"Ugh... hkk..."

The air was cut off. Ed's throat made a wheezing sound like a broken bellows. He frantically clawed at Leon's arm, but it was motionless, harder than steel. He kicked powerlessly, like a chicken held by the scruff.

As the oxygen left his brain, Ed's eyes bulged, turning a purplish-black.

The camp fell into a silence more terrifying than before. The crackling of the fire and Sophia's crying seemed miles away. Every eye was fixed on the god-like figure holding a grown man aloft with one hand.

Leon.

His expression hadn't changed. No anger, no grimace. His eyes were cold and calm, looking at Ed as if he were a lifeless object.

Shane froze. His forward momentum died instantly, replaced by shock and a burgeoning sense of fear. He realized that what Leon had shown earlier while killing walkers wasn't his full strength.

This was. This speed, this absolute power that ignored physics. This wasn't human. This was a dimensional strike.

Rick's outstretched hand stopped in mid-air. He saw the terrifying power, but he also saw the precision behind it. Leon hadn't roared or beaten the man; he had ended the violence with the cold efficiency of a judge.

Amy's knuckles were white. She looked at Leon's back—a back that now seemed like an insurmountable mountain, bringing a suffocating sense of order to the camp.

Andrea's breath hitched, a faint smile touching her lips. She knew he wouldn't let her down.

"If there's a next time..." Leon finally spoke.

His voice was a low whisper in Ed's ear, yet in the dead night, everyone heard it.

"Your hand will no longer belong to you."

It wasn't a threat. It was a statement of fact.

The coldness of the sentence pierced Ed's oxygen-starved brain. His will shattered. He stopped struggling, his body going limp like mud. Tears and snot flowed uncontrollably.

Leon let go.

Thud.

Ed fell heavily, curling into a ball and coughing violently. When he looked up at Leon, there was no resentment left—only the primitive, biological fear of a prey animal.

Leon didn't look at him again. He turned and knelt beside the wailing Sophia. He reached out and gently wiped the tears from her face. A gentle smile reappeared, making him look like a completely different person.

"It's okay now," he said warmly.

Sophia's crying slowed into sobs. She looked at him with a sudden, deep dependence. Leon then looked at Carol.

Her gaze was a chaotic mix of fear and an unmasked gratitude. This young man had stopped the kick; he had broken the man she thought was an unstoppable force in her life.

Leon didn't offer her words of comfort. He stood up and swept his gaze over the camp.

He looked past Shane, who was ashen-faced; past Rick, who looked deeply troubled; and past Dale, who looked disappointed yet helpless.

"In the apocalypse, everyone is combat power," Leon said. His voice was steady and powerful. "Rather than wasting it on internal strife, it's better to use it to feed the walkers."

He turned his gaze toward Shane. The look made Shane's heart palpitate.

"A disobedient piece of trash..." Leon's voice turned cold, "is still more useful than a corpse."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Shane's pupils contracted. Rick's eyes turned deep with thought. They both understood the subtext.

Leon wasn't being a saint. He was establishing a new, cruel law: people are resources. Even a man like Ed or a villain like Merle—as long as they could swing a weapon or serve as a distraction for a walker tide—had value.

To kill them out of rage was a waste. The real way was to control them, use them, and squeeze out every last drop of their utility. It was the cold logic of a leader.

Rick looked at Leon, his mind in turmoil. Shane's fists slowly relaxed, his violence replaced by a grim contemplation. He realized Leon was talking to Ed, but the lesson was meant for him.

Use the knife, don't destroy it.

The campfire continued to burn. The atmosphere of the camp had shifted.

If Rick's return gave the group a brain, Leon's actions had given it a hard, unquestionable backbone.

The rules were set.
