After finishing dinner, Edmond lay back on the bed and began to rest briefly.

He needed to conserve his energy to make it easier for him to act late at night.

That’s right, he planned to go and scout the situation at those three Graveyards tonight to facilitate his subsequent actions.Full novel: The Witcher: I Refuse to Become a Lich King — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

After a while, the door was knocked on again; the maid came in, cleared the remaining plates, and then left.

Just like that, time passed slowly, and soon it was late at night.

The room’s window had been left open.

Once the movements outside gradually faded and it became quiet,

“It should be about time.”

Edmond opened his eyes and stood up from the bed.

Then, he draped a long black robe over himself, shrouding his entire body within it.

Ensuring that everything about him was hidden and that no one else would recognize him, Edmond stood by the window.

Seeing that there was no one outside, he used a Spell to create a bone whip, which he fixed to the window.

With the help of this bone whip, he descended from the upper floor to the ground with great ease.

Afterward, he retracted the bone whip and quickly vanished from the spot.

Since the Graveyard near the church was the closest, Edmond prepared to go there first.

Because it was already late at night and there was a curfew, even though there were many people in the town today, there was no one on the streets.

There were only a few scattered night watchmen holding torches.

With the help of his powerful Mental Power, Edmond could detect them from a great distance and easily avoid them.

Just like that, Edmond arrived at the Graveyard without any obstruction.

The Graveyard was to the left of the church, surrounded by a chest-high iron fence.

Inside the Graveyard stood over a hundred tombstones, mostly made of stone, casting a grayish-white cold light under the moonlight.

Through the sensing of his Mental Power, Edmond discovered a small house at the entrance of the Graveyard, with two people inside.

“There aren’t many people.”

Edmond thought to himself.

After briefly surveying the situation at this Graveyard, he left and continued toward the other two Graveyards.

The other two Graveyards were located outside the town, about a twenty-minute walk away.

Edmond walked along the edge of the town and soon arrived at the civilian Graveyard on the east side.

This place was a completely different world from the church Graveyard; not only was there no one guarding it, but no one else would come here in the middle of the night.

Therefore, Edmond didn’t need to be so careful this time.

After using his Mental Power to sense the entire Graveyard, the result was indeed as he had expected.

At least several hundred people were buried in the entire large Graveyard, but there were very few usable corpses underground.

Most of the graves contained only empty coffins or a few scattered bones.

The souls within had long since dissipated, and the bodies had rotted away into nothing but soil.

Those corpses had either been dug up by his teacher or had been buried for too long and completely decayed.

After scouting the other Graveyard as well, Edmond found that the situation was much the same.

Combining the two Graveyards, there were only two usable corpses, which looked like they had been buried in the last few days.

After confirming the location of these two corpses, Edmond did not dig them up immediately, but prepared to take them away later.

He certainly couldn’t resurrect them into skeletons now, because once resurrected, it would become very difficult to hide them.

So it would be better to transport them back before converting them all at once.

Afterward, Edmond returned to the inn, which took him about an hour in total.

…

Over the next few days, Edmond focused all his attention on purchasing supplies.

He spent a total of thirty-six oren to purchase a large batch of supplies, which he estimated would be enough for him to use for two months.

This had reached the limit; any more, and the carriage wouldn’t be able to fit it all.

“Just have these delivered to the Oak Inn.”

Inside a carpentry shop, Edmond said to the shop owner.

“Yes, sir, please rest assured.

We will definitely deliver them safely and guarantee there won’t be the slightest damage.”

The owner bowed and replied with a face full of smiles.

Edmond had purchased a large batch of furniture in his shop, which was comparable to his usual monthly business.

“That will do.”

Edmond nodded and then left directly.

Except for the floor bedding, there was no other furniture in the cave.

Usually, he could only sit on the floor bedding when writing, which was very inconvenient, so he decided to purchase some furniture to take back this time.

After leaving the carpentry shop, Edmond calculated in his heart that all the necessary supplies had been purchased.

If that was the case, he could try moving everything onto the carriage today.

While thinking this, Edmond returned to the inn.

Just as he was about to go upstairs, his powerful Mental Power suddenly and keenly captured a conversation coming from above the stairs.

One person’s voice was very familiar; it was clearly the maid from before.

“Mother, why did you come here?”

This was the maid’s voice.

Immediately afterward, an old and weary voice came, with a hint of sobbing in her tone.

“Liliana, your father’s condition has worsened again.”

“Then go see a doctor!” The maid’s voice raised by half a degree, becoming urgent.

“But…

there is no money left at home.”

“How is that possible?

Didn’t I just send some money home a few days ago?”

“It’s simply not enough.

Your father is very ill this time.

The doctor said we need to use good medicine and hire the best physician in town to see him…”

The old voice grew lower and lower, as if talking to herself, or as if crying out in distress.

Liliana was silent for a while, and finally asked:

“Then about how much is needed?”

“At least twenty oren.”

There was another long silence, and then Liliana’s voice rang out, lower than before, but calmer instead.

“Mother, you go back first.

I’ll think of a way to get this money.”

“So much money, how will you…”

Afterward, there was another burst of quiet conversation.

After a good while, the maid helped an old woman walk downstairs.

Both of their eyes were red, obviously having just cried.

And seeing Edmond below, the two of them instantly became nervous.

“Sir.”

The maid, Liliana, hurriedly pulled her mother to bow her head and greeted him respectfully.

“Hmm.”

Edmond nodded calmly and then bypassed them to go upstairs.

…

After the furniture was delivered, Edmond hired some porters to move all his things outside the town.

He also tidied up his room, preparing to leave with them.

Before leaving, he specifically called the maid, Liliana, over.

“Sir, is there something you need?”

Liliana asked in a respectful tone.

Edmond looked at her; her eyes had returned to their previous state, clearly having been wiped.

“Your father is ill?”

Liliana was stunned for a moment, then nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

While answering, she was curious as to why Edmond was asking her about this.

A trace of unease suddenly welled up in her heart, worried that her and her mother’s conversation in the hallway had displeased this gentleman.

As for Edmond giving her money because of this, she hadn’t even considered that possibility.

Twenty oren was not a small sum; it was enough for an ordinary family to eat for nearly a year.

She didn’t believe that a total stranger would just give someone so much money.

There was no such good thing in this world.

“Sir, if this matter has displeased you, I…” She began to defend herself, her voice a bit hurried.

She was afraid that this gentleman would go and complain to the boss, afraid that she would be fired, and afraid that this only source of income would be cut off.

And just as she began to defend herself, Edmond waved his hand to interrupt her directly, while simultaneously handing her an ordinary small bag.

The maid subconsciously reached out to take it.

“This money is what I am lending to you.

Use it to get your father treated.” He leaned in slightly, close to the maid’s ear.

“Be careful, don’t let anyone else see the money inside.”

After saying that, he turned and left directly.
