The atmosphere inside the Black Ridge War Room was thick with the scent of oud, old paper, and a jagged, mounting desperation.

The room, usually a place of quiet corporate strategy for the Hayes Security Company, had become a pressure cooker.

Atlas Hayes stood by the window, his hands clasped behind his back so tightly his knuckles were white.Full novel: To Tame a Rogue Alpha — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He watched the heavy gates of the estate, the very gates Ariella had walked through only days prior.

Beside him, Asher sat slumped in a leather chair, his left arm encased in a stark white cast that looked like a badge of humiliation.

“It’s not just a rumor anymore, Atlas,” Asher hissed, his voice cracking with a mixture of pain and fury.

He adjusted his sling with his good hand, wincing.

“The campus footage was wiped, but the witnesses weren’t.

Half the Omega students are talking about the ‘Silver Command.’ They saw me hit the dirt.

They saw you flinch.”

“I didn’t flinch,” Atlas lied, though his wolf gave a sharp, humiliating whine in the back of his mind.

He still felt it—that crushing, ancient weight that had surged from his sister’s chest.

It hadn’t felt like a wolf’s dominance; it had felt like the earth itself deciding he was unworthy of standing.

“Father says the Council is demanding a Purity Test tonight,” Asher continued, ignoring the lie.

“They think Ironfang is using her as a biological weapon.

If Vane gets his hands on her during the test, he’ll know.

He’ll know she’s not a Dilution.”

“Then we ensure the test is ‘inconclusive,'” a new voice boomed.

Richard Hayes walked into the room, followed by the cool, silent presence of Cassandra.

The Alpha of Black Ridge looked every bit the powerful patriarch, but the lines around his eyes were deeper than they had been a week ago.

“The Ironfang convoy has just crossed the border,” Richard said, his voice a low, commanding rumble.

“Grimshaw is bringing her in a full Alpha motorcade.

He’s making a statement.

He wants us to know that he isn’t just her mate—he’s her keeper.”

“He’s a scavenger,” Cassandra added, her voice like ice water.

She adjusted the pearls at her neck, her expression one of utter disdain.

“He bought a broken tool and thinks he can polish it into a diamond.

Tonight, we show the Council that Ariella is still a Hayes.

We show them that her ‘power’ is nothing more than a rogue’s trick.”

Atlas looked at his mother.

“And if it isn’t a trick?

If she really is…

Primal?”

Cassandra’s eyes narrowed.

“Then we do what we should have done twenty years ago, Atlas.

We prune the branch before it breaks the tree.”

Thirty Miles North – The Ironfang Convoy

Ariella sat in the back of the lead SUV, her fingers tracing the cold, black iron of the collar around her neck.

It felt heavy—a literal and symbolic weight that grounded the restless, silver fire in her blood.

She was dressed in a gown of midnight emerald material that hugged her curves like a second skin.

The open back exposed the Ironfang mark on her shoulder—the bite Grimshaw had given her that morning.

It throbbed with a rhythmic heat, a physical link that pulled at her senses, making her feel hyper-aware of the man sitting beside her.

Grimshaw was a dark shadow in the seat.

He was dressed in a black-on-black tuxedo, his hair swept back, his grey eyes fixed on the tablet in his lap.

He looked like a king, but the tension in his jaw told a different story.

“You’re shaking,” he said, not looking up.

“I’m not shaking,” Ariella retorted, though her hands were trembling in her lap.

“I’m planning.”

“Planning what?

How to jump out of another car?”

“Planning how to survive the very people who raised me.”

Grimshaw finally looked at her.

His eyes were dark, swirling with that bottomless void energy.

He reached out, his hand closing over her trembling fingers.

His touch was electric, a jolt of power that sent a wave of calm—and a sharper wave of desire—through her.

“Listen to me, Ariella,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, predatory hum.

“Tonight, you are not the girl who lived in a storage room.

You are the Luna of Ironfang.

Every wolf in that house will be looking for a crack in your armor.

They will try to bait you.

They will try to trigger your wolf.”

“I don’t have a wolf, I can’t shift,” she whispered.

“You have something better.

But you cannot use it.

Not yet.

If you use the Command tone tonight, the Council will seize you before we can reach the gates.

You stay beside me.

You let my Void shield your scent.

Do you understand?”

“Why are you doing this?” Ariella asked, her golden-silver eyes searching his.

“You could have handed me over to the Council days ago.

You could have let Vane have me.

Grimshaw’s grip on her hand tightened, his thumb brushing the pulse in her wrist.

For a split second, the cold Alpha mask shattered, and she saw the man who had stood in the library shadows—the man who had looked at her with a raw, agonizing hunger.

“Because you are the only thing in this world that isn’t boring, kitten,” he whispered.

“And I don’t give up my toys.”

Anger slammed into her then.

She hated him—hated his arrogance, his control, his coldness.

But as his Void pulled at her Primal heat, she felt an addictive, feral need to crawl into his lap and bite him back.

The SUV slowed, the tires crunching on the gravel of the Black Ridge drive.

“We’re here,” Grimshaw said, his voice turning to steel.

He pulled her hand up, kissing her knuckles while his eyes stayed locked on hers.

“Show them the fire, Ariella.

But don’t let them see the flame.”

The Black Ridge Lodge – The Ballroom

The Lodge had been transformed.

The rustic wood and stone were draped in white silk and silver bay.

Hundreds of wolves from the Northern Alliance were gathered, their scents creating a dizzying cloud of pheromones.

Silas walked three paces behind Ariella and Grimshaw as they entered.

He moved with a practiced, elegant limp, his silver-topped cane clicking against the marble floor.

Click.

Click.

Click.

To anyone else, he was a refined Beta.

To the wolves in the room, he was a silent threat, his blue eyes scanning for snipers and Siphoners.

The room went silent as they reached the top of the grand staircase.

Ariella felt the weight of a thousand stares.

She saw her old schoolmates, the ones who had whispered “Dilution” in the hallways.

She saw the pack elders who had voted to sell her.

And she saw her brothers.

Arlo was standing near the buffet, his golden eyes wide with a mixture of grief and awe.

He looked at his sister in her emerald gown and iron collar, and he didn’t see the girl he’d played with in the woods.

He saw a total stranger.

Asher was at the bar, gripping a glass of bourbon with his good hand, his eyes burning with a angry, psychopathic hate.

And Atlas.

He stood at the center of the room, flanked by their parents.

He looked like he was facing a firing squad.
