The doors sealed behind her.

As she was escorted through the emergency tunnels, Ariella touched the copper-wire note in her pocket.

She touched the black feather hidden in her sleeve.Full novel: To Tame a Rogue Alpha — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Two men, two different scents.

Two wars.

Her heart was beginning to betray her.

Back at the Spire – Dawn

The battle ended at sunrise.

Vane retreated, his forces overthrown.

Thirty Siphoners became fifteen.

Fifteen became scattered survivors fleeing into the Fracture.

Ironfang was now safe.

But the cost was high.

Grimshaw stood in the ruins of the Eastern Ridge, his tactical vest torn, blood seeping from a deep gash on his ribs.

The Void-Wolf form had faded, leaving him looking more human than she had ever seen him.

More vulnerable.

“Where is he?” Grimshaw asked Silas, his voice raw.

“I don’t know,” Silas said honestly.

“Isn’t Ash-walker in front of me now?

You think I wouldn’t know?

Grimshaw, that was reckless.

You said you would stop appearing in front of her.”

“Reckless?

So I should’ve let those filthy things touch her?

I took Ariella from Vane, I fought to land that marriage!

And you think I’m going to give up that easily?

No!

So yeah, he’s going to fight a little harder to get her back.

I know what he wants.

He wants Ariella for her primal energy.”

“Primal energy?

I thought she doesn’t have a wolf,” Silas asked, a frown creasing his brow.

“Do you mean that Ariella possesses a different kind of wolf?

Wait…What’s primal about her wolf?”

Grimshaw closed his eyes, a muscle ticking in his jaw.

“It’s not just a different kind of wolf, Silas.

It’s…older.

Untamed.

The kind of power that predates packs, predates the moon goddess.

It’s why they want her, why he wants her.

She doesn’t just have a wolf; she is a force.

He could still feel the Void-Primal bond thrumming between himself and Ariella, a tangible connection to that raw power.

He could feel her fear, her confusion, and beneath it—a deeper, more dangerous hunger.

His fist hit the wall, the concrete crumbling under the force, echoing the turmoil inside him.

He was in deep…and he knew his enemies would use Ariella to get him, not realizing the true extent of the storm they were about to unleash.

The Master Suite

Ariella was sitting on the bed when Grimshaw entered.

She was wrapped in a blanket, her hair tangled, her eyes red from smoke and tears she refused to shed.

She looked up as he walked in, and for a moment, neither spoke.

“You’re hurt,” she said.

“And you’re alive,” he replied.

They stood in the charged silence, the space between them crackling with unresolved tension.

“The Ash-Walker,” Ariella said quietly.

“He was in the safe room.

He saved me from the scout.”

Grimshaw’s jaw flexed.

“I told you to stay hidden.”

“He saved me,” she repeated, her voice hardening.

“While you were fighting Vane, he was protecting me.

Why?

What does he want?

I thought he was a ghost story.”

“I don’t know,” Grimshaw lied, and the lie tasted like ash on his tongue.

“I’m beginning to think y’all are lying to me.

The ash-walker is not a ghost story and you know it!

Because he left me this,” Ariella said, pulling the black feather and the copper-wire note from her pocket.

“He told me to rest.

To not burn too fast.

What the hell does that even mean?”

Grimshaw stared at the feather, his eyes darkening.

“You like him,” Grimshaw said, his voice dropping to a dangerous rumble.

“He protects you.

He sends you messages.

And you…

you feel something for him.

Right?”

Ariella stood up, her own anger surging.

“You’re one to talk!

You watch me through cameras.

You send Silas to guard me.

You control every breath I take.

At least the Ash-Walker treats me like a person, not a prisoner!”

“And when you learn that he only wants to use you?

“He wants you as leverage.

He wants to point you at the Council like a weapon and secure more power.

Is that what you want?”

“And you?” Ariella shot back.

“You want me to warm your bed and pop out pups.

What’s the difference?”

The words hit him like a physical blow.

Grimshaw stopped, his chest heaving, his hands clenched at his sides.

For a long moment, he looked at her—really looked—and she saw the exhaustion, the fear, the desperate, aching loneliness beneath the Alpha mask.

“The difference,” he said quietly, “is that Grimshaw would burn the world down just to keep you safe.

And I hate myself for it.”

The confession hung in the air like smoke.

Ariella reached out, her fingers brushing his jaw.

“Then let me help you.

Stop locking me away.

Stop treating me like a porcelain doll, I have got teeth.

If Vane is coming, if the Council is circling, then I need to be a weapon, not a decoration.”

“And if you become a weapon,” Grimshaw whispered, his hand coming up to cover hers, “you might forget what it feels like to be a woman.”

“Then help me remember,” she said, her voice barely a breath.

He kissed her, soft this time.

Almost tender.

His mouth moved against hers with an aching, desperate gentleness that made her knees buckle.

She leaned into him, her fingers curling into the fabric of his torn shirt, and for a moment, they were just two broken people finding shelter in each other.

But when his hands moved to the tie of her robe, she caught his wrists.

“Not yet,” she whispered.

Grimshaw pulled back, his eyes searching hers.

“Why?”

“Because I’m not ready to be just yours, Alpha,” Ariella said, and hated herself for the words.

“There’s a ghost in my head, Grimshaw.

And until I know who he is…

I can’t give you all of me.”

The silence that followed was devastating.

Grimshaw stepped back, his expression becoming a mask of cool indifference.

“I don’t compete, Ariella.

Not for women.

If he thinks he can have you, let him try.”

He turned and walked out.

Ariella sank onto the bed, the black feather in her hand, the copper-wire note burning against her palm.

She had almost let Grimshaw claim her.

She had almost forgotten the ghost.

But now the war was personal.

And she intended to win it.
