A heavy silence settled over the room.

Neither of them looked away.

The world around them seemed to dissolve until there was nothing left but the distance separating them.Full novel: To Tame a Rogue Alpha — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Grimshaw held her gaze without blinking.

Ariella met it with equal determination.

Neither intended to lose.

“You’ve gone very quiet, kitten,” Grimshaw observed.

“My name is not kitten.

I expect Alpha Grimshaw to address me as Ariella.”

A low chuckle rumbled from his chest, drawing startled glances from several guests.

“You’re mine.

I will call you whatever I wish to.”

“Then don’t expect any more responses from me.” Ariella replied coolly.

His eyebrow lifted.

“Is that a challenge?”

“Is that simple?”

His amusement deepened.

“You’re very bold.

What makes you think I plan to make this marriage any easier for you?”

Her heart skipped.

She had always known Alpha Grimshaw to be a cold, hot-tempered, cruel Alpha.

But getting really close to him revealed even more to her.

He loved a challenge, and if she was going to survive at least a year with him, she needed to keep up with this facade.

She instinctively stepped closer before anyone could stop her, closing the narrow gap between them.

Though he towered over her, Ariella refused to tilt her head in submission.

Her chin remained high, her golden eyes blazing beneath the chandelier’s warm light.

“If I were you,” she said quietly enough that only he could hear, “I’d tear those contracts apart.”

Grimshaw scoffed, folding his arms.

“Would you?”

“I would.”

“And why is that, kitten?”

“Because you’re making the worst investment of your life.”

Several guests shifted nervously as they watched the exchange, unable to hear the words but sensing the unmistakable tension.

“You believe I’ll regret marrying you.”

“I know you will.”

“You sound remarkably confident.”

“I’ve had years to perfect being everyone’s disappointment.”

Something flickered across Grimshaw’s face.

Not sympathy but recognition.

“I don’t want your name.

And I don’t want to bear your pups.”

That finally drew a reaction.

His wolf stirred beneath the calm mask he wore, displeasure flashing briefly through his dark eyes before disappearing just as quickly.

“And I certainly,” Ariella continued, “don’t intend to become the obedient Luna everyone expects.”

Grimshaw leaned down slightly, lowering his voice.

“Good.”

Her brows knitted together.

“…What?”

“I’ve already had obedient people surrounding me my entire life.”

His eyes searched hers.

“They’re remarkably boring.”

She stared at him.

That…wasn’t the response she’d expected.

“I don’t need another woman who agrees with everything I say.”

“No.”

“What then?”

“It tells you I won’t waste my time trying to change who you are.”

She laughed once.

Dry.

Disbelieving.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don’t particularly care whether you do.”

His confidence irritated her far more than arrogance would have.

As though he had already accepted every sharp edge she possessed.

“As long as you understand one thing,” Ariella said.

“I’m listening.”

“This marriage exists only on paper.” She tapped the contracts resting on the table.

“Nothing more.”

“My body isn’t something you purchased.”

A dangerous silence entered the room.

Every wolf present seemed to hold their breath.

Grimshaw’s expression remained unreadable.

“You’re right.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“I am?”

“No contract grants me ownership over your mind.” He paused deliberately.

“Or your respect.”

The unexpected answer stole the next retort from her lips.

“But,” he continued evenly, “don’t mistake that for weakness.”

His voice dropped another octave.

“Because when someone declares war on me…”

A slow smile curved across his mouth.

“…I simply become patient.”

Ariella felt heat rush through her chest.

“I’m not declaring war.”

“No?”

Ariella remained silent, not knowing what to say.

For a heartbeat…neither of them moved.

Then Grimshaw extended a hand toward the documents.

“Shall we begin?”

Her father, who had wisely remained silent throughout the exchange, cleared his throat.

“The contracts.”

An attorney hurried forward, sliding the thick leather folder onto the polished oak table.

“The union between Ironfang and the Hayes family,” he announced formally.

“To be witnessed by those present and recognized by the Northern Council.”

Grimshaw accepted the pen first.

Without hesitation…he signed.

His handwriting was bold and deliberate, each stroke decisive.

When he finished, he placed the pen beside Ariella.

She didn’t touch it.

“I can wait,” Grimshaw said.

“So can I.”

A faint smile tugged at his lips again.

“I suspected as much.”

Minutes stretched.

The room grew increasingly uncomfortable.

Someone coughed. This story is hosted at g.com.

Another guest shifted in their chair.

Cassandra’s patience finally snapped.

“Ariella.”

Silence.

“Sign the contract.”

Still nothing.

Her mother stepped forward.

“I said—”

Slowly, she reached for the pen.

Grimshaw watched every movement.

Instead of rushing her, he merely turned the contract slightly so it rested comfortably beneath her hand.

A small gesture, oddly considerate.

She hated herself for noticing.

The pen hovered over the signature line.

This single stroke would erase the last illusion that her life still belonged to her.

Her fingers tightened.

Then…she signed.

A sharp breath escaped somewhere behind them.

The attorney immediately collected the documents, checking both signatures before stamping them with the official council seal.

“It is done.”

Just like that.

Around the room, reactions unfolded one after another.

Her brothers looked relieved except Arlo who couldn’t even pretend.

His eyes shimmered as he watched his sister standing alone among people who should have protected her.

“I’m sorry,” he mouthed silently.

Ariella gave the smallest shake of her head.

‘Don’t’

Not now, not when apologies were useless.

Across the room, Cassandra lifted her champagne glass with quiet satisfaction.

Her smile was victorious.

As though she’d finally scrubbed a stubborn stain from the family name.

Richard Hayes exhaled long and heavy.

He looked relieved.

Not because his daughter had found happiness…but because the problem had been handed to someone else.

Grimshaw noticed every reaction.

He said nothing.

His gaze returned to Ariella.

Everyone else saw a completed contract.

He saw something entirely different.

A woman standing perfectly still while everything she had ever known collapsed around her.

Most wolves would have broken.

She hadn’t.

If anything…the fire in her eyes had only grown brighter.

Interesting.

Ariella lifted her chin and met his gaze one final time.

“I meant every word I said.”

“I know.”

“I’ll make you regret this.”

“I look forward to seeing you try.”

Her lips curved into the faintest smile.

It wasn’t warm, it was a promise.

“So do I.”
