The referee blew the whistle and purple kicked off, the ball soon found Daichi’s feet as he trapped it.

Daichi scanned the field and how the Yellow team shape moved before passing it to Hiroto.

Daichi then turned his body toward the right side and moved into space when the pass left his foot, already offering Purple a route through midfield rather than allowing the opening possession to become a straight forward ball.Full novel: Touchline — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Hiroto received on his right foot.

He let the ball travel across his body, the first touch opening his hips toward the centre while drawing Ryota a step closer.

The moment Ryota committed, Hiroto returned the ball to Daichi, who had dropped several metres nearer Riku and Tetsuo so the centre-backs had a clear option behind the first line of pressure.

Yellow did not rush forward as a single unit.

Shigeru moved toward Riku.

Akihiko angled his run toward Tetsuo.

Their positioning was deliberate: discourage the straight pass into the middle, force Purple to play around.

Ryota and Hideo held their distances rather than following Daichi deep and leaving space behind them.

Daichi looked up, opened his body, and played the ball toward Kazuki on the right.

The full-back received near the touchline with his hips already turned inside.

Satoshi shifted across immediately from Yellow’s right midfield to close him.

Kazuki could have pushed the ball beyond the midfielder and chased, but the space would have collapsed before the rest of Purple arrived.

He returned the ball inside to Daichi and continued his run up the flank.

That run created the first problem.

Ren was already higher and wider on the same side, almost level with the last midfield line, while Kazuki advanced beyond him from behind.

Satoshi now had to choose: follow the full-back or stay close enough to Ren.

He stayed with Ren.

Kazuki kept going.

Daichi received again, carried three steps toward the centre, and found Makoto in the space between Yellow’s midfield and defensive lines.

Makoto took the ball with his body half-turned, already scanning for the next angle.

Hideo stepped toward him at once.

Keisuke advanced a few metres from the back line, narrowing the gap before Makoto could complete the turn.

Makoto felt the pressure arriving from both directions.

He placed his body between Hideo and the ball, took one controlled touch away from the defender with the outside of his right foot, and returned possession to Daichi.

Purple kept the ball.

Yellow’s two lines remained intact.

They had not created an opening, but they had begun asking the question that would run through the half: how long the defensive block could stay compact while being forced to move from side to side.

The ball travelled through Daichi and across toward Tetsuya on the left.

The left-back received near the touchline and carried into the space ahead of him.

Soma dropped to offer a short option.

Taiga moved outward to confront Tetsuya, which immediately created a little more room inside. This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.

Tetsuya played into Soma’s feet.

Soma controlled with his left foot and turned inward.

The moment he faced the centre, both Taiga and Ryota shifted toward him, creating a narrow corridor.

Instead of forcing the dribble, Soma slowed, placed the sole of his boot on the ball for a fraction of a second, allowed Taiga to commit his weight and rolled it back.

Tetsuya had continued beyond him.

The return pass offered another chance at the same side, but Yellow recovered quickly with Kazuya narrowing from the left and Keisuke sliding across behind Taiga so no gap opened between full-back and centre-back.

The crowd reacted with a mixture of approval and impatience.

“They’re moving it well.”

“They’re not getting through.”

Purple held most of the possession.

Yellow refused to chase.

Every time the ball moved toward one flank the midfield four shifted together without allowing the central spaces to open.

Rui watched Daichi.

Almost every Purple possession still passed through him.

He found the safest available angle, received from one side, moved the ball toward another, then repositioned so the next player never had to take the ball with his back fully exposed.

Haru stood beside him with his arms folded.

“They’re making Yellow run.”

Rui nodded without looking away.

“But Yellow aren’t chasing.”

Purple continued to circulate from Kazuki to Daichi, across to Tetsuya, through Hiroto and Makoto, and back again.

Satoshi tracked the ball when it entered Purple’s left side.

Kazuya narrowed from the opposite wing.

Ryota and Hideo adjusted their distances so Yusuke never found the clean pocket between midfield and defence.

Then Daichi changed the rhythm.

After receiving from Riku he carried the ball forward instead of moving it sideways at once.

The decision forced Ryota to step.

Daichi waited until the midfielder’s weight was committed, then slipped the ball into Hiroto, who had moved just beyond Ryota’s shoulder.

Hiroto turned.

For the first time Purple were facing the Yellow back four while moving toward them.

The field opened a fraction.

Yusuke began drifting between Yuma and Keisuke, forcing both centre-backs to decide whether to follow.

Ren pushed wider on the right, drawing Mizuki toward the touchline.

Soma held his position on the opposite side and prevented Taiga from narrowing too far.

Hiroto carried two touches and released the ball diagonally toward Ren.

Mizuki was waiting.

Ren took the ball on his right foot and slowed, studying the full-back’s stance.

Mizuki lowered his centre of gravity and angled his body slightly inside, protecting the route into the box while leaving the outside lane.

Ren noticed.

He nudged the ball forward as if to accelerate down the line.

Mizuki shifted with him.

Ren dragged the ball across his body with the sole of his left foot and stepped inside.

Mizuki recovered alongside, yet the movement had pulled the full-back inward and opened the space for Kazuki’s overlapping run behind him.

Ren saw the run.

Kazuya saw it too and began dropping.

Ryota moved across to protect the inside channel.

Ren released the ball into Kazuki’s path.

The full-back reached it just before Kazuya arrived, first touch carrying him toward the edge of the attacking third.

Taiga began sliding across.

Keisuke adjusted toward Yusuke.

Kazuki lifted his head.

Yusuke waited between the centre-backs.

Ren continued inside.

Hiroto arrived behind the attack.

For a moment Kazuki shaped as if to deliver early, forcing Taiga to turn his shoulders toward goal.

Instead he cut the ball backward to Daichi.

Daichi met the pass outside the area.

Yellow’s midfield had shifted toward him.

He took one touch forward, another across his body, drawing Hideo and Ryota closer without giving either a clean chance to tackle.

The crowd expected the shot.

Daichi had no intention of forcing one merely because the ball had reached a dangerous area.

He returned it to Hiroto.

Hiroto received just outside the crowded central lane and looked toward the wings.

Ren and Soma still held their positions.

Yellow had been forced to retreat, but the defensive line remained intact as Yuma and Keisuke protecting the space around Yusuke, the midfield four recovering beneath them.

The first sustained attack had produced no shot.

It had not needed to.

Purple had learned something simple.

Yellow were prepared to surrender possession and for the moment that was enough to keep the match exactly where Yellow wanted it.

Eight minutes had gone and the contest continued with Tatsuya watching on.
