The name Shen Xinhe made Sheng Xia jump to her feet. The female lead had appeared?

Wasn’t the female lead a big celebrity? How had she become a waitress? Could it just be someone with the same name?

Gu Cheng’an pulled the bewildered Sheng Xia back down to her seat. “A witness has come forward, so how do you explain things now?”Full novel: Transmigrating into a Book, I Refuse to Be the Rich Young Master’s Wife — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“I swear, there was no one else there, just me and Lu Xiaoxiao…”

Gu Cheng’an understood. “So you attacked her when no one was around? How foolish—if you’re going to hit someone, at least check your surroundings first. Now you’ve been caught red-handed, haven’t you?”

Sheng Xia grew anxious, completely missing the deeper meaning behind Gu Cheng’an’s words. “I didn’t! How many times do I have to say it for you to believe me? I didn’t push her, and I wouldn’t stoop to hitting her. She insulted me first, and when I tried to reason with her, she flew into a rage and lunged at me. I simply stepped aside, and she lost her balance and fell against the sink!”

“What’s the point of telling me this? The Lu Family is demanding an apology from you, so are you going to apologize?”

“No!” Sheng Xia refused to apologize when she had done nothing wrong.

“Old Madam of the Lu Family said if you don’t apologize, they won’t go easy on you.” Gu Cheng’an narrowed his eyes at Sheng Xia. “You know how unreasonable the Lu Family can be. If they decide to retaliate, they might even break your nose.”

“My nose hasn’t been altered by surgery, so it won’t break!”

“Really? Let me check.” Gu Cheng’an reached out to touch her nose, but Sheng Xia swatted his hand away. “Stop fooling around and focus on the matter at hand. So, you want me to apologize?”

“What else can you do?” Gu Cheng’an’s indifferent tone made Sheng Xia’s anger flare. As expected, she couldn’t rely on this stingy, malicious dog of a man.

She sneered, “Have you read the marriage agreement? During the marriage, you are unconditionally obligated to protect me.”

Gu Cheng’an looked at Sheng Xia in surprise, and she met his gaze. Unsure whether this Shen Xinhe was the female lead, she decided she had to make Gu Cheng’an meet her regardless.

If the female lead sparked something with Gu Cheng’an, Sheng Xia could take the hefty alimony and walk away free.

With this in mind, Sheng Xia quickly added, “I really didn’t lay a hand on Lu Xiaoxiao. Why don’t we go find that witness, Shen Xinhe, and ask her ourselves?”

Gu Cheng’an had only been teasing Sheng Xia earlier. As his wife, even the arrogant Lu Family would have to back down out of respect for him.

Since he didn’t care about the Lu Family in the slightest, why would he bother meeting some witness in person? “Let Jing Ci handle this.”

If Gu Cheng’an didn’t meet the witness Shen Xinhe, he would miss the chance to encounter her. Still uncertain whether this Shen Xinhe was the female lead, Sheng Xia refused to let slip any opportunity for Gu Cheng’an to meet her. “No, I want you to handle it personally!”

“Hmm?” Gu Cheng’an tilted his head and glanced at Sheng Xia. She put on a pleading smile and begged, “Husband, could you please go meet that witness yourself? I’m begging you!”

Gu Cheng’an didn’t know what Sheng Xia was up to, but hearing the long-unused term “husband” put him in a good mood. “Fine, I’ll go meet this witness myself! But you’re coming with me!”

On the way to meet Shen Xinhe with Gu Cheng’an, Sheng Xia sat in the passenger seat, lost in thought.Could this Shen Xinhe be the female lead? She vaguely remembered some details from the book—the female lead, Shen Xinhe, possessed breathtaking beauty, and Gu Cheng’an fell for her at first sight.

So, the truth would soon be revealed. She hoped the person she was about to meet today was indeed the female lead, Shen Xinhe. As long as Gu Cheng’an was captivated at a glance, she could secure a hefty alimony and make her graceful exit.

With this hopeful thought, the car pulled up at the hospital entrance, where Jing Ci was waiting for Gu Cheng’an.

Seeing Gu Cheng’an’s car stop, Jing Ci quickly approached: “The witness, Shen Xinhe, is visiting a patient in the hospital ward. Mr. Gu and Mrs. Gu, please follow me.”

The three of them entered the ward building and soon arrived at a room. Jing Ci gently knocked on the door a few times, and it was opened from inside.

A stunningly beautiful face came into Sheng Xia’s view—so fresh and ethereal that even she felt a flutter in her heart, let alone any man.

Sheng Xia instinctively glanced at Gu Cheng’an beside her. His gaze had noticeably softened upon seeing Shen Xinhe.

Oh, this looks promising!

Sheng Xia cheered inwardly and quietly stepped aside.

Shen Xinhe was not only beautiful but also had a lovely voice: “Hello, Mr. Gu! Hello, Mrs. Gu! Please come in!”

Gu Cheng’an stepped into the ward and immediately saw a middle-aged woman lying on the bed, her face sallow and emaciated.

Noticing Gu Cheng’an’s gaze on the patient, Shen Xinhe quickly explained: “This is my aunt. She has uremia…”

As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes. Gu Cheng’an remained silent, his eyes fixed on the patient’s name on the bed.

Sheng Xia followed his gaze: Wang Yulan—an ordinary name.

Why was Gu Cheng’an looking at the patient’s name? Shouldn’t he be looking at the female lead? She’s the one who holds your heart—a few more glances and sparks of true love will fly.

Not wanting to stay and disturb Gu Cheng’an and Shen Xinhe’s budding connection, Sheng Xia got straight to the point: “Miss Shen, I came to ask you something. Regarding your testimony that I pushed Lu Xiaoxiao, did you really see me push her?”

Gu Cheng’an, who had been staring at the patient’s name, also turned to look at Shen Xinhe.

Tears rolled down Shen Xinhe’s cheeks: “I’m sorry! Mrs. Gu, I’m truly sorry! I lied! I didn’t see you push Miss Lu. Miss Lu forced me to lie!”

The sight of a beauty in tears was truly pitiable. Gu Cheng’an must have been moved, as he asked gently, “Why did you lie?”

“My aunt has uremia and needs a kidney transplant. She has no other relatives besides me. I wanted her to survive, and Miss Lu offered me money and help finding a kidney source. I was blinded by greed and agreed… I’m sorry, Mrs. Gu! I’m sorry, Mr. Gu! It’s all my fault!”

Shen Xinhe apologized repeatedly, and Sheng Xia breathed a sigh of relief as her name was cleared.

Gu Cheng’an’s gaze lingered on Shen Xinhe’s exquisite face, his brow slightly furrowed. With tears streaming down her face, Shen Xinhe apologized again:

“I shouldn’t have twisted the truth for my own selfish reasons. I won’t accept Miss Lu’s money or kidney source anymore. I’ll make things clear! Mrs. Gu, I’m truly sorry!”

Seeing Shen Xinhe’s tear-streaked, delicate face, even Sheng Xia couldn’t bring herself to blame her, let alone Gu Cheng’an.

His tone remained gentle as he said, “I understand. I’ll help you find a way with the money and the kidney source.”It really was love at first sight. In just these few short minutes, Gu Cheng’an had already taken a liking to the female lead. Not only did he offer to cover the medical expenses for her aunt, but he even promised to secure a kidney donor.

Sheng Xia clicked her tongue in her mind. So this is the power of love.

She wouldn’t stay here as a third wheel. It was best to tactfully make herself scarce and give Gu Cheng’an and the female lead, Shen Xinhe, some space to get cozy.

Sheng Xia pretended to glance at her phone. “Well, since everything’s been cleared up, I’ll be on my way. I have plans with someone.”

Gu Cheng’an frowned at Sheng Xia. “Where are you going?”

“I’m meeting someone to look at orchids,” Sheng Xia lied casually. Gu Cheng’an’s mind was completely occupied with Shen Xinhe now, so naturally, he had no time to bother with Sheng Xia. “Let Jing Ci take you.”

“No need, I’ll take a taxi.”

With that, Sheng Xia made her escape, practically sprinting down the hallway and into the elevator.

As the elevator descended, Sheng Xia’s heart was bursting with joy. “Amitabha! May heaven bless me! May Gu Cheng’an and Shen Xinhe quickly embark on their sweet love journey, and then give me a huge alimony payment—ten billion, without even having to leave empty-handed. My future life will surely be blissful.”

Lost in her happy thoughts, she could almost see the carefree life she would lead after the divorce, with a massive settlement in hand.

The elevator doors opened, and Sheng Xia, grinning from ear to ear, dashed out without a care in the world. But as they say, extreme joy begets sorrow. The moment she rushed out, she crashed headlong into someone with a loud thud.
