The dormitory corridor smelled faintly of lamp oil and the leftover dinner trays some students had left outside their doors.

Lucien walked the familiar path back from the library, his satchel heavier than usual with borrowed texts on advanced resonance.

The lamps flickered as he passed, casting long, uneven shadows that danced across the stone walls.Full novel: Truck-kuns Final Boss: Reborn as Villainess Family’s Worst Spawn — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He was getting better at ignoring how they sometimes seemed to move on their own.

Elara stepped out, coat already buttoned high despite the mild evening.

She paused for half a heartbeat when she noticed him, then continued down the corridor.

“Training ran late?” Lucien asked, slowing his steps.

“Something like that.” She adjusted the cuff of her sleeve, the movement quick.

Her voice stayed even, but there was a faint rasp at the end…, like she’d been talking for too long.

Or not sleeping enough.

She started walking in the same direction without waiting for him to catch up fully.

Lucien fell in beside her.

Their footsteps echoed together down the hall.

“You’ve been leaving later than usual.”

Elara didn’t look at him.

“Academy work.

Nothing that concerns you.”

The words hung there.

Not sharp.

Just final.

She turned the corner toward the upper wing where the older students had their rooms, her pace steady.

Lucien stopped at the split, watching her go until the corridor swallowed her figure.

He stood there a moment longer than he needed to, the lamp above him sputtering once before steadying.

He shook it off and continued to his own room.

The day had been long.

The report was turned in.

The lost points noted with Aldric’s usual curt disapproval.

Manageable.

Inside his room the air felt stuffy.

He opened the window, letting the cooler night breeze in.

The courtyard below was mostly quiet now, just a few students hurrying back from evening study groups.

One of them laughed at something, the sound carrying faintly upward.

Lucien sat at his desk for a while, flipping through one of the borrowed texts without really reading it.

Sleep came eventually, but it was restless.

Dreams of crowded city streets mixed with unfamiliar shadows that refused to stay still.

The next morning passed in the usual blur of classes.

Captain Harlan’s session was shorter than normal.

The man barked instructions, corrected forms with his typical bluntness, and ended the drill early without explanation.

“Enough.

Fix the rest on your own time.”

Lucien wiped sweat from his brow as the others dispersed.

Harlan lingered near the equipment racks, watching a pair of third-years argue over something unrelated to magic.

Lucien almost asked about the shortened session, then thought better of it.

Some questions weren’t worth the short answer he’d likely get.

Theo caught up with him on the path back.

“You look like you didn’t sleep.

Bad dreams or just too much library time?”

“Both,” Lucien said.

“The usual.”

Theo adjusted his glasses, grinning.

“Come on.

Lira’s group is meeting again later.

She’s convinced she can beat me at cards this time.

You should join.

We need someone who doesn’t get overly dramatic when they lose.”

Lucien managed a half-smile.

The rest of the day slipped by in fragments.

A shared lunch where conversations flowed around him.

An afternoon lecture where he actually managed to take decent notes.

Small, ordinary pieces that were starting to feel less like a performance and more like routine.

Evening found him in the library again, returning one of the texts.

Cecilia was there too, tucked in her usual corner with a stack of herbology journals.

She waved him over when she noticed him.

“Perfect timing,” she said, pushing a small bundle of clippings toward him.

“I was going to leave these for you.

The new strain stabilized better than I expected.

Thought you might want to try grafting it yourself sometime.”

Lucien took the bundle.

The leaves felt cool and slightly damp.

“Thanks.

I’ll give it a shot.”

They talked for a short while about nothing particularly important.

Cecilia rambled about soil mixtures.

He mentioned a trick he’d picked up for stabilizing the mana flow.

Easy exchange.

No pressure.

No performance.

When he finally left the library the corridors were quieter.

Most students had retreated to their rooms or evening activities.

Lucien headed back toward the dorms, the bundle of clippings tucked carefully in his satchel.

The night air coming through the nearest window carried the faint scent of jasmine.

He continued to his room, the day’s small routines settling around him like familiar weights.

Nothing dramatic.

Just the quiet sense that something small had shifted, even if he couldn’t quite name it yet.
