Leon’s movements were fluid.

No hesitation, no wasted motion.

Turn around.

Smile.

One clean sequence.

Warden Wallace’s facial muscles gave a small, involuntary twitch.

He stared at the donation box, then at Leon’s face, that unnervingly composed face, then back at the box.

There was only one key to that donation box in the entire prison.

It sat locked in the safe behind him.

The moment that money dropped in, it was as good as his.

And in a way no one could ever pick apart.

This kid…

He wasn’t bribing.

He was handing over a certificate of allegiance.

He’d taken a sum of dirty money and, in an almost public gesture, converted it into funds that only Wallace could touch, through a channel no one could challenge.

Clean on paper.

Entirely his.

Which meant Leon had just placed his own leash in Wallace’s hands.

Any time Wallace felt like it, he could crack that box open, pull out the cash, and bury Leon under a bribery charge without breaking a sweat.

This was the deepest kind of submission.

A loyalty that bordered on the pathological.

Wallace sank back into his wide executive chair and let his body go loose for the first time all morning.

The look he gave Leon shifted.

For the first time, it carried something like appreciation.

This kid was a ruthless one.

Ruthless to himself.

Even more ruthless to everyone else.

And above all — he understood the rules.

“You’re clever, Leon.” Wallace’s tone eased, a faint smile working into the edges.

“Cleverer than I imagined.”

“I just want to ease your burden, sir.” Leon gave a slight bow, posture low, manner deferential.

That attitude.

God, it felt good.

“Sit.” Wallace gestured to the chair across the desk.

Leon sat.

“Don’t worry about the Ashley situation.” Wallace laced his fingers together and rested them on the swell of his belly, settling into the posture of a man with everything under control.

“An extra twenty years sounds dramatic, but that’s just the report for upstairs.”

“I’ve got a state hearing next month.

At this particular moment, I cannot have this prison making noise.

“One piece of filth gone, Block C gets peace and quiet.

That’s a trade I’ll take every time.”

“As for Ashley…” He gave a small curl of his lip.

“I know she’s yours.

From here on out, Block C inmates answer to her.”

“What I need is a stable Block C.

One that doesn’t create a single problem for me before my promotion comes through.”

“Tell her: as long as she keeps her head down, this so-called ‘heightened supervision’ is nothing.

Different cell, maybe an extra chicken leg with her meals.”

“I understand, sir.” Leon nodded.

“I’ll make sure she understands your consideration.”

“Good.” Wallace pulled open his desk drawer, produced a set of keys, and tossed them across the surface.

They clinked against the desk with a sharp, clean ring.

Leon’s eyes dropped to the keys.

One brass key, a number etched clearly into its face.

3.

Warehouse Three.

The emergency stockpile.

There it was.

“That’s the key to Warehouse Three.” Wallace’s voice shifted, turned serious.

“Frank’s getting old.

Brain’s not what it was.

I’m not comfortable leaving something that important with him.”

“From today, Warehouse Three is yours.

Full responsibility.”

Wallace stood, walked around the desk, and clapped a hand on Leon’s shoulder.

His voice went deliberate and weighted.

“Leon.

What’s in that warehouse is this prison’s emergency reserve.

It’s what keeps every last one of us alive when things go sideways.”

“I’m handing it to you because I trust you.

And because I’m watching.”

“Do it right.

Don’t disappoint me.”

Leon knew exactly what Wallace meant.

Emergency supplies, technically.

But supplies had other uses.

“Normal wear and tear,” for instance.

Wallace was nothing if not a greedy man.

“I will not betray your trust, sir.” Leon stood immediately, both hands out, his expression one of a man genuinely overcome by the honor — and accepted the heavy ring of keys.

An unexpected windfall, and that was putting it mildly.

His original plan had been simple: the moment the world ended, move on the warehouse fast, lock it down, take the supplies before anyone else had the idea.

A smash-and-grab in the opening chaos.

Instead, this greedy old fox had just personally walked the vault key over to the inside man.

That wasn’t using company property for private gain.

That was handing him the whole company.

“Get out.”

Wallace waved a hand and settled back into his chair.

Leon closed his fingers around the keys, turned, and walked out of the warden’s office.

He went straight to Warehouse Three.

It sat in the most remote corner of the prison grounds.

The massive iron door was secured by a thick chain and padlock.

Leon stopped in front of it, swept his eyes around the area.

No one.

He drew the key.

CLICK!

Clean and crisp.

He pushed the heavy door open.

The smell hit him first — cardboard and dry storage and the faint chemical bite of preservation.

Sunlight pressed through the gap behind him and lit up one corner of the interior.

Row after row of tall shelving units, packed floor to ceiling.

Stacked on every shelf: crates and boxes blanketed in military-green waterproof tarps, all arranged with precise, orderly care.

MRE combat rations.

Canned water, by the case.

Antibiotics.

Field first-aid kits.

High-grade diesel in sealed drums.

The scale of it was larger than he’d imagined.

Leon walked forward slowly, the way a king moves through his own treasury.

He pulled a crate open.

AR-15 rifles, laid in neat rows, barrels still gleaming with fresh preservation oil.

He opened another.

Boxes of 5.56mm ammunition, stacked to the lid.

He kept moving.

Handguns.

Shotguns.

Body armor.

Night-vision gear.

This wasn’t emergency supplies.

This was the full inventory of a small military base.
