Kaelen carefully lifted Soren into his arms, holding him close to his chest.

Because of the chain, their wrists rested together right over Soren’s heart, the rose-colored metal glowing with a soft, soothing warmth as it bridged their pulses.

Kaelen carried him back over to the campfire, setting him down gently against a dry, mossy stone wall sheltered from the wind.Full novel: Unbinding The Alpha BL — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Kaelen sat right beside him, his massive frame blocking out the cold drafts, making sure Soren was completely wrapped in the warmth of his heavy fur cloak.

Soren looked up through heavy eyelids, watching as Kaelen unstrapped his own canteen, opened it, and held it to Soren’s pale lips.

“Drink,” Kaelen coaxed softly.

Soren took a few small sips of the cold water, feeling the liquid soothe his throat.

He looked at Kaelen’s face—at the faint smear of ash on his jaw, the dark hair falling over his forehead, and the fierce, protective concern filling his amber eyes.

“We can’t stay here long,” Soren rasped out, forcing himself to stay awake.

“Those war horns…

more of them will come once that leader reaches his camp.”

“We will rest for two hours,” Kaelen said firmly, placing a gentle hand on Soren’s shoulder to keep him from trying to sit up.

“Your body needs to recover from the magic backfire.

I will keep watch.

No one gets near you while I’m breathing.”

Soren stared at him, the cold, rational arguments in his mind fading away under the sheer reality of Kaelen’s presence.

There was no pretense here.

No Citadel politics, no noble titles, no lies.

Just an Alpha who had fought off a squad of poisoned killers without letting a single blade touch him.

“You’re a fool, Kaelen,” Soren whispered softly, his eyes slowly closing as exhaustion finally claimed him.

“A stubborn, arrogant fool…”

Kaelen smiled—a tiny, soft, heartbreakingly genuine smile in the quiet darkness of the forest.

He reached out, his bare thumb gently wiping a speck of ash from Soren’s cheek.

“Sleep, spell-cutter,” Kaelen whispered, his fingers lingering for just a second against Soren’s skin before pulling back to hold his broadsword across his lap.

“I’ll be right here.” Find the original chapter at g.com.

As Soren drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep, wrapped in the scent of pine and Kaelen’s warm aura, the rose-colored chain between their wrists pulsed softly in the dark—binding them not just by magic, but by a bond that was growing deeper with every step into the wild.

The frontier settlement of Ash-Haven was less of a town and more of a sprawling, chaotic den of thieves built into the hollowed-out roots of , dead wood trees.

Smoke from fires hung thick in the air, smelling strongly of roasted game and unrefined sulfur.

Wooden shacks with iron-reinforced doors lined the muddy, winding streets, lit only by flickering lanterns and the eerie glow of green lichen.

“Pull your hood down further,” Kaelen whispered, his deep voice vibrating right against Soren’s ear.

Soren swallowed hard, adjusting the heavy wool fabric of the dark, oversized travel cloak wrapped around both of their shoulders.

To hide the glowing, rose-colored chain binding their wrists, they had no choice.

Standing three feet apart in a town full of mercenaries and bounty hunters was an instant death sentence; two strangers walking glued side-by-side under a single massive cloak just looked like suspicious lovers or cautious guards.

It was torturous and every step required absolute synchronization.

Kaelen’s wide, iron-clad shoulder was pressed firmly against Soren’s side, his arm wrapped tightly around Soren’s waist under the cloak to keep the heavy fabric from slipping and exposing the chain.

The sheer heat radiating off the Alpha’s body washed over Soren, fighting off the freezing mist of the valley.

“You’re stepping on my boots,” Soren muttered under his breath, leaning his weight slightly into Kaelen’s side to keep from tripping over a raised tree root in the mud.

“If you walked a bit faster, spell-cutter, your boots wouldn’t be under mine,” Kaelen growled softly back, his hand tightening just a fraction around Soren’s waist to steady him as a group of rowdy, armored mercenaries stumbled past them, laughing loudly.

Soren bit the inside of his cheek to keep from replying.

The proximity was overwhelming.

Every time Kaelen took a deep breath, Soren could feel the rise and fall of his chest.

His nose was filled with the pheromones of Kaelen—pine, fresh snow, and the warm, grounding metallic tang of his Alpha aura.

They navigated the crowded, muddy thoroughfare, keeping their heads low as they passed stalls selling black-market weapons, stolen Citadel supply crates, and jars of preserved monster organs.

“Where is this broker?” Kaelen murmured, his golden eyes scanning the shadowy alleys from beneath the rim of his dark hood.

“The third alley past the butcher’s stall,” Soren replied, keeping his voice barely above a whisper.

“Look for a sign carved with a three-eyed raven.

His name is Vane.

He deals in rare spell-anchor and regional intel.”

They turned down a narrow, dimly lit passage between two towering timber shacks.

Before they had taken five steps down the quiet alley, Soren felt a subtle, unnatural pull at his belt.

His spell-cutter instincts, sharpened by years of handling delicate magical components, instantly flared.

A young, nimble thief in a ragged leather tunic had slipped out from the shadows behind a stack of empty wooden crates, sliding a long, thin blade toward the leather pouch at Soren’s hip—where his remaining coin and silver dagger were kept.

Soren didn’t flinch or make a sound.

Because Kaelen’s arm was around his waist, Soren couldn’t reach across his own body with his right hand.

Instead, Soren nudged Kaelen’s hip with his elbow and shifted his weight backward.

Kaelen caught the signal instantly.

Without a second of hesitation or looking behind him, Kaelen shifted his footing, using his broad body to pivot Soren cleanly out of the blade’s path.

In one fluid, seamless motion, Soren raised his left hand, grabbing the thief’s wrist, while Kaelen reached under the cloak with his free right hand, clamping a massive, iron-hard grip around the pickpocket’s throat.

The young thief gasped, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he found himself lifted two inches off the ground, pinned against the wooden wall of the alley by a man whose face was completely hidden in shadow.

“Touch him again,” Kaelen said, his voice dropping into a deadly, ice-cold rumble that made the thief tremble, “and I break every bone in your fingers.”

“I-I’m sorry!

Mercy, my lord!” the thief squeaked, dropping his thin blade into the mud.

Soren reached out, calmly plucking his coin pouch back from the thief’s hand before giving Kaelen a small nod.

“Drop him.

We don’t need a scene.”

Kaelen released his grip, and the boy hit the muddy ground, scrambling away into the dark alley as fast as his legs could carry him.

Soren pulled the cloak back over their shoulders, adjusting his stance beside Kaelen.

“Not bad, Commander.

You react quickly for a brute.”

“I react quickly when someone reaches for what’s mine,” Kaelen replied smoothly.

Kaelen is definitely taking his protective duty a bit too personally, but Soren isn’t complaining too much yet.

What did you think of their synchronized alleyway teamwork?
