I felt my heartbeat stutter, the cold of the rain being replaced by a spreading, heavy warmth.

Red began to tint the black asphalt.

My consciousness splintered.

The pain was a brief, blinding flash, followed by a cold, digital silence.

Then, my world went black.

The silence didn’t last long.

It was replaced by a sharp, electric hum that vibrated in my very marrow.

A flickering blue screen popped up before my fading eyes, cutting through the darkness like a neon blade.

[BOOTING SYSTEM…]

“Wait,” my mind flickered.

“A blue screen?

Really?

I’m dying to a Windows error?

How un-aesthetic.”

[SYSTEM INITIALIZED: Version 7.0 – ‘Aegis’]

[STATUS: Host life-signs critical.

Cardiac arrest in 3…

2…]

“Am I dead?” I screamed internally.

“Technically, yes,” a crisp, feminine voice echoed directly in my consciousness.

It was cool, professional, and entirely unimpressed.

“But your soul is far too obnoxious to be processed by the standard afterlife.

The bureaucracy doesn’t know where to put you.”

“Who are you?

What do you mean?”

“Hi, I’m Aegis.

I suggest we don’t waste any more time on questions.

It’s not like you have a lot of breath left for a Q&A session.” Her voice softened, just a fraction.

“You’re about to flatline, Kaelen.

But you have an option.”

“An option?

Like a second chance?” That familiar spark of hope—the ultimate gamer’s high—ignited in my chest.

“Correct.

You are currently in the Void—the space between life and death.

For a noble act—laying down your life for another—you’ve been flagged as a candidate.

Accept the bond, and you’ll be reincarnated in a world where you can evolve, upgrade, and rewrite your own stats.”

“Reincarnation?

Like an Isekai?” A mental smirk tugged at the edges of my fading consciousness.

“Yes.

I’m in.

Let’s get on with it.”

“Also, I’m bringing the cat,” Aegis added.

“She’s the missing piece required to complete the soul-contract.”

“So furball is coming too?

Awesome.

I’d hate to start a new game without a companion.”

[ESTABLISHING KANN-VANE INTERFACE…]

[REBIRTH PROTOCOL ENGAGED: 10%…

40%…

80%…

100%]

[REINCARNATION COMPLETE.

TRANSPORTING NOW.]

The world vanished into a void of pure static.

Then, light hit my eyes.

I sat up, gasping, my lungs suddenly filling with air that felt heavy and charged with electricity.

I looked down.

I was sitting in a field of obsidian-black grass that looked like it had been carved from shadow.

Then a notification popped up on the screen

[WELCOME TO THE VOID, VANGUARD.]

I slapped myself across the face.

SMACK.

“Ouch!

Okay, that hurts.” I scrambled to my feet, looking at my hands.

They were mine, but different—sharper.

My hair, once messy brown, was now a deep, midnight black.

“I’m alive!

I’m actually alive!”

“Sorry to interrupt the victory lap, Kae,” Aegis’s voice rang out, now much clearer.

“But the reincarnation is just the hardware.

We still need to install the software.

You need to know the meta of this world if you want to survive.”

“Survival, huh?

I was doing fine until the truck,” I retorted, scanning the blue HUD flickering in my peripheral vision.

“You were flattened like a pancake until I intervened,” Aegis countered.

Translucent windows expanded in the air.

“Welcome to the Void.

It’s a magical realm with Zero-Tech, High-Death probability, and exactly zero Wi-Fi.

No social media, Kae.

Just raw, unfiltered Mana.”

“Mana.

Like the games?” I reached out, my fingers passing through a window labeled [WORLD PARAMETERS].

“Exactly.

But any slow reaction here results in decapitation.

You gotta be fast on your heels.

This world is infested with 100% more monsters than animals.

Society is built on Guilds—Adventurers ranked E to S.

They’ve been trying to kill the Demon King for a thousand years.

They’re failing.”

“S-Rank?

Boss battles?” I smirked.

“So I just need to grind some low-level slimes and—”

“Quiet,” Aegis snapped, a red warning icon flashing.

“You aren’t a standard player.

You’ve been chosen by the Late Wraith-King as his successor.

You inherited a Blood-Debt.”

My smile vanished.

“A debt?

I didn’t sign up for a career path, Aegis.”

“The Wraith-King’s power—the Void—is yours.

You are the Vanguard.

Objective: Slay the Demon King, protect the weak, and restore the balance.”

“And if I refuse the promotion?”

“The System retracts your life-support, and you return to being a smear on the pavement.”

[NOTIFICATION: INITIALIZATION CONTRACT]

[ACCEPT ROLE AS VANGUARD?

YES / NO]

“As if I have a choice,” I muttered, slamming my hand against the [YES] icon.

[INITIATION COMPLETE.

SOUL-BINDING SECURED.]

“Good,” Aegis said, her voice regaining its witty edge.

“Now, look at your wrist.

That’s the Kann-Vane.

Since you’re ‘Mana-Inert’, you can’t cast spells.

You use Void Energy.

You’re a Close-Combat Specialist, Kae.

The ‘Jack of all Trades’ just became a ‘Master of Death’.”

I flexed my fingers, feeling a dark, humming power.

“So…

no fireballs?”

“No fireballs,” Aegis confirmed.

“In fact, your Rank is fixed at E-Class.

You can’t ‘Level Up’ your rank like a generic hero.

In the eyes of the Guilds, you are, and will always be, a Level 1 Noob.”

My eye twitched.

“An E-Rank?

You’re giving me a character with a broken stat-tree?”

“I’m giving you a Stealth Build.

People look at an E-Rank and see a servant.

They won’t see the Void coming until it’s ‘Game Over’.

Now, meet your partner.”

“Meow.Meow”

Sitting in the grass was the cat.

She was no longer a scruffy stray.

She was pitch-black with white paws like tiny socks, a white-tipped tail, and a crown of silver hair on her forehead.

Her yellow eyes were piercing.

“Name the creature,” Aegis directed.

“It seals the Familiar Contract.”

I crouched down.

“A name, huh?

Something legendary.

How about…

Kitty?”

Aegis sighed.

“So typical.

You couldn’t sound more lame.”

“Okay, okay!

How about…

Pixel?”

The cat blinked.

Her white-tipped tail twitched.

“Pixel?” Aegis pulsed blue.

“You really are a geek.”

“It fits.

She’s small, she’s sharp, and she’s part of the bigger picture.”

[NOTIFICATION: BOND ESTABLISHED]

[SKILL UNLOCKED: UNIVERSAL SEMANTICS (PASSIVE)]

POP.

A static charge hit my ears.

Pixel stretched her paws and let out a meow that translated directly into my brain.

“About time, Master.

And for the record, I preferred ‘Shadow-Claw’, but Pixel is acceptable for a human with your limited imagination.”

I scrambled back, nearly tripping.

“Did…

did the cat just trash-talk me?”

“Oh my God,” I burst out, a frantic, ecstatic laugh bubbling up.

“I have the Language Cheat Code!

Aegis, do you realize how dope this is?

Every stray dog is a spy!

I’m a one-man intelligence guild!”

“Actually,” Pixel purred, sitting back on her haunches.

“I’m more of a Strategic Consultant.

Now, are we going to stand here celebrating, or are you going to address the elephant in the room?”

“Right,” I whispered, the annoying, confident grin returning to my face.

“Aegis, what’s on the agenda?”

“On the agenda?” Aegis’s voice dropped an octave, turning sharp.

“Survival.

Look at your ten o’clock, Kae.

The local welcoming committee just arrived.”

The conversation died instantly.

From the shifting grey mists, three Wraiths emerged.

They were terrifying silhouettes of tattered cloth and smoke, hovering just above the ground.

In the center of their hollow chests, a sickly blue ‘Core’ pulsed with light.

Their skeletal claws scraped against the black grass with a sound like metal dragging on bone.

“Aegis!

Weapon!

Now!” I yelled, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

“Give me a sword, a gun, a heavy-duty stapler—anything!”

[ERROR: VOID ARMORY IS EMPTY.]

[ADVICE: RUN.

PREFERABLY AT A VELOCITY THAT EXCEEDS YOUR CURRENT PANIC LEVEL.]

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” I scooped up Pixel, tucking her small, fluffy body under my arm, and bolted.

“Pixel, do something!

You’re a legendary familiar!

Use a skill!

Fire breath!

Shadow clones!

Anything!”

“I already told you, Master,” Pixel’s voice echoed in my head as a spectral claw whistled past my ear, inches from my shoulder.

“I’m a Strategic Consultant.

My current strategy is: Don’t stop running.

Also, you’re holding me too tight; you’re messing up my fur.”

“You guys are useless!” I screamed, my lungs burning with every jagged breath.

We reached a jagged, rocky embankment.

Above us lay a dense, glowing forest—the high ground.

I leaped for a handhold, my eyes locked on the ledge, but my sneaker skidded on a slick, mossy stone.

A sickening POP echoed through the clearing.

“Gah!” I collapsed, my ankle twisting at a brutal, bone-crunching angle.

I rolled onto my back, gasping, the pain shooting up my leg like an electric shock.

I looked back—the Wraiths were closing in, their blue cores glowing brighter as they prepared to delete my new life before the tutorial was even over.

I looked at the black-and-white cat in my arms.

Those amber eyes.

Those white paws.

A flash of the truck’s headlights hit my mind—the weight of failing to protect her once before.

I hadn’t saved him back there just to let him become ghost-food here.

“Not again,” I whispered.

The annoying smirk was gone, replaced by a grim, selfless resolve.

I looked up at the forest ledge.

“Listen, Pixel.

I tried saving you once and ended up getting us flattened.

I’m not letting you go down with me this time.”

“Master, what are you—”

“Go find someone better!

Someone who can actually protect you!” I used every ounce of my Void-charged strength and hurled Pixel upward.

The cat soared through the air, her white-tipped tail spinning like a propeller, before landing safely in the thick bush above.

“Live your life, you arrogant furball!”

I slumped against the cold rocks, watching the shadows tower over me.

My vision blurred.

“Aegis…

I guess I failed the mission, huh?

Dying on Day One.

Talk about a Game Over.”

I closed my eyes, waiting for the cold touch of the Void.

SHINK.

A gust of wind, sharp as a razor, whipped past my face.

A flash of steel followed, accompanied by the rhythmic clack-clack of boots.

CRACK.

SHATTER.

SILENCE.

I opened one eye.

The Wraiths were gone, reduced to fading grey embers.

Standing in their place was a girl in light leather armor, her brown hair tied back in a messy ponytail.

She carried a short-sword that hummed with a faint green mana.

In her other arm, she was awkwardly clutching a very, very annoyed furball.

“I heard a shout,” she said, looking down at me with wide, emerald-green eyes.

“Then I saw this little guy flying through the air like a hairy cannonball.

I caught him before he hit a tree.” She hugged Pixel closer, her face softening into a look of pure adoration.

“I wonder who would throw such a cute, innocent creature like a piece of trash?”

My face went from pale to bright red.

I avoided her gaze, rubbing the back of my neck.

“I…

uh…

it was a high-velocity tactical deployment?”

Pixel let out a series of sharp, consecutive meows.

To her, it was a cute cat sound.

To me, it was a high-volume lecture: “A tactical deployment?

Really?

You threw me like a used rag, Master.

My dignity is currently at negative percent.”

The girl giggled, stepping forward to help me up.

“I’m Lisa.

I’m an adventurer from the Silver-Sieve Guild.” She started buzzing with energy, the words coming out in a blur.

“Who are you?

Where are you from?

Is this cat with you?

Why weren’t you fighting back?

Are you a—”

“Whoa, whoa!” I held up a hand, cutting her off.

“Slow down.

One question at a time, okay?”

“My bad!

I’m sorry!” She looked down at the cat, her face flushing.

She scratched Pixel behind the ears, making him purr despite himself.

“As I said…

I’m Lisa.

The Silver-Sieve is a small guild.

We’re mostly miscellaneous types.

Most people call us the ‘Misfit Guild’ because our success rate isn’t…

exactly high.

We’re a bit of a mess.”

Aegis popped up a notification in the corner of my eye.

[SCAN COMPLETE: TARGET – LISA]

[RANK: D | ABILITY: MAGIC USER | STATUS: NOT A THREAT]

[NOTE: SHE LIKES ANIMALS MORE THAN PEOPLE.

SHE’S PERFECT FOR US.]

“The Silver-Sieve, huh?” I leaned on Lisa, gritting my teeth against the throb in my ankle.

“I’m Kaelen.

And I think I want to be an adventurer.

Or at least, I want to find out more about those blue-hearted freaks.”

“The Wraiths?” Lisa’s expression turned serious.

“They’re everywhere lately.

Their cores are their weakness, but you need Mana to shatter them.

You’re lucky I was patrolling.”

She looked at the horizon, where the dim, warm lights of a town flickered against the violet sky.

“Come on, Kaelen.

Let’s get you to Oakhaven.

We can register you as an E-Rank, get that ankle looked at, and find a way to make sure you don’t have to throw your cat anymore.”

I looked at the girl, then at the grumbling cat in her arms, and finally at the blue HUD glowing in my vision.

“Alright,” I smirked, that confident spark finally returning to my eyes.

“Let’s go see what this world has to offer.”

Pixel sat perched securely on Kaelen’s shoulder, her small body tense against his collarbone.

Her ears pinned flat back against her head, but her tail cut a sharp, anxious yet deeply curious arc through the air, twitching with a restless anticipation.

Her eyes, wide and luminous, remained locked onto the shifting shadows of the distant treeline—frightened by the unknown, yet entirely captivated by the massive world unfolding right before them.

They felt it too.

The invisible weight of a world that didn’t just want to test us—it wanted to consume us.

Yet, beneath the fear, there was an undeniable thrill, a collective silent vow to see exactly what lay beyond the dark.

As the three of them began the walk toward the town, the first sun of the Void began to rise.

The grind was officially on.

So many questions, so many mysteries

What exactly were these thirsty, mana-sucking creatures that could slip through physical defenses like a bad server glitch?

Where in the absolute depths of this corrupted realm did they originate from, and what malevolent force was pulling their strings from the shadows?

More importantly, with Kaelen’s current low-tier stats and his absolute zero control over the volatile void energy, can these phantom leeches even be stopped by him, or are they about to completely drain their team’s mana reserves until there’s nothing left but hollow husks without the Knight’s help?

And just like that, the server was live.

Kaelen was officially in the game now—though somebody probably forgot to hand him the game manual, a map, or a basic tutorial.

He’s standing on a completely unknown map with a nonchalant upper-Ranked Knight powerhouse, who jumps to any fight without a plan.

Will this self-proclaimed tactical Architect dominate the local leaderboards, or is he about to get completely wiped out by high-tier monsters before even reaching the nearest town square?

Can his analytical brain survive the chaotic, volatile mana formatting of this fantasy realm, or is he just fast-tracking his way to an instant game over?

The grid was set.

The difficulty was locked at an absolute extreme.

Can a legendary pro-gamer command a reality where he doesn’t even know his own class metrics?

Find out if he scales the ranks or faceplants into the dirt in the next high-stakes episode of Vanguard of the Void!
