The pulsating violet veins running through the rock walls provided a dim, sickly illumination, casting long, writhing shadows that danced mockingly against the damp stone.

Shu walked slightly ahead, his eyes darting between the floor, the walls, and the yawning darkness ahead.

Every sound was magnified in the confined space—the soft crunch of gravel under their bare feet, the steady drip of viscous moisture from the cavern ceiling, and the distant, rhythmic thrum of the earth itself.

Kai’Sa stayed close, her shoulder brushing against his arm.

She didn’t complain about the exhaustion or the pain in her bruised limbs.

The trauma of the collapse and the reality of the monster they had just killed had stripped away her childhood in a matter of hours, replacing it with a grim, watchful silence.

“Shu,” Kai’Sa whispered suddenly, her voice barely carrying over the ambient hum of the tunnels.

She stopped walking, her eyes fixed on a narrow offshoot tunnel branching off to the right.

“Do you hear that?”

Shu halted immediately, raising a hand to signal her to stay still.

He held his breath, straining his ears against the gloom.

At first, there was only the familiar, sickening drip of fluid and the faint click of distant chitin.

But beneath those baseline noises, another sound caught his attention.

A low, vibrating murmur.

It didn’t sound like the violent, ravenous screech of a Voidling.

It sounded rhythmic, almost melodic in a haunting, alien way—like a choir of whispers echoing through a hollow vault of bone and stone.

A sudden, sharp spike of ice drove straight into the base of Shu’s skull.

The words weren’t spoken aloud in the air; they resonated directly inside his mind, brushing against the edges of his consciousness with a cold, invasive familiarity.

The static hum of his death, the terminal voltage of the destroyed monitor, the endless dark of the cosmic gap—it all flooded back for a fraction of a second, merging with the alien frequency of the tunnel.

“Shu?

Your nose is bleeding,” Kai’Sa said, her voice laced with sudden panic as she reached out to touch his cheek.

Shu wiped his upper lip with the back of his hand, finding a smear of bright red blood.

He forced his breathing to slow down, beating back the mental intrusion with sheer, stubborn will.

“It’s nothing,” Shu said, his voice raspy but fiercely controlled.

He grabbed her hand, tightening his grip.

“Don’t listen to it.

Whatever is down that tunnel, it wants us to look.

Keep moving straight.”

They hurried past the opening, their footsteps quickening against the cold stone floor, fleeing from the whispers that clung to their backs like grasping, invisible fingers.
