Chapter 20: The Chitinous Walls

They ran until their lungs burned and their legs felt like lead, plunging deeper into the labyrinth of organic tunnels until the shrieks of the wounded beast faded entirely into the ambient hum of the abyss.Full novel: VOIDBOUND — Children Beneath Runeterra — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Shu finally pulled Kai’Sa into a shallow crevice along the wall, collapsing against the cold rock as he gasped frantically for air.

His chest felt like it was on fire, and the sharp, stabbing pain in his ribs returned with a vengeance.

Kai’Sa slid down beside him, her small body trembling uncontrollably.

She hugged her knees to her chest, burying her face in her arms to muffle her ragged breathing.

“Are…

are you okay?” Shu rasped out, forcing the words past his dry, aching throat.

He looked over at her, noting the deep smudges of exhaustion and dirt on her face.

Kai’Sa slowly lifted her head, nodding weakly.

“I’m…

I’m okay.

But Shu, your arm—”

Shu glanced down at his right arm.

A long, jagged slash ran from his elbow to his wrist, soaked in blood where a sharp piece of protruding rock had caught him during their frantic escape.

The wound was stinging fiercely, the alkaline dust of the cave aggravating the raw flesh.

“It’s just a scratch,” Shu lied smoothly, though his vision wavered slightly at the edges from blood loss and sheer physical exhaustion.

He leaned his head back against the wall, taking slow, deliberate breaths to steady his heart rate.

The environment around them was changing drastically.

The stone walls were no longer merely damp rock; they were entirely encased in a thick, translucent layer of hardened biological resin—a dark, purplish carapace that felt warm to the touch, like the skin of a living, breathing organism.

The air here was heavy, thick with moisture and an overwhelming, metallic tang that tasted like copper on their tongues.

Every surface seemed to pulse with a faint, steady heartbeat.

“We can’t keep running blind,” Shu muttered, half to himself, as he scanned the suffocating corridor ahead.

“We need water.

We need shelter.

If we don’t find a stable pocket soon, our bodies will give out before the Voidborn even find us.”

Kai’Sa reached out, her small, cold hand finding his uninjured palm and squeezing it tightly.

“We’ll find something, Shu.

We have to.”

Her quiet, unwavering conviction struck a strange chord deep within Shu’s chest.

In this absolute wasteland of nightmares, they had nothing except each other.

And as he stared into the pulsing, organic dark ahead, Shu tightened his grip on her hand, his jaw setting with grim, unyielding resolve.
