No one knew it at the time.

The people running through its streets believed they were escaping.

They believed the war would end.

They believed someone, somewhere, would stop it.

They were wrong.

The city had once been called Beijing.

Before that, it had been rebuilt and renamed more than once.

By the time of the Fourth World War, names had become almost meaningless.

Cities changed!

Borders disappeared!

Nations merged!

Nations split!

Humanity had expanded beyond Earth, but its oldest instincts had followed it into space.

Fear.

Greed.

Pride.

The need to possess what belonged to someone else.

The war had begun as all wars did with reasons.

There were political reasons.

Economic reasons.

Territorial reasons.

Technological reasons.

Treaties.

Ultimatums.

Negotiations.

Then came the first orbital strike.

After that, history stopped pretending it could control itself.

The man running through the underground corridor had once been a respected scientist.

Now he was trying to survive.

His name was Dr.

Aarav Sen.

He was fifty-three years old.

His left arm was bleeding.

He did not know how badly.

He did not have time to find out.

The corridor shook!

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Somewhere above him, something enormous exploded.

Aarav stumbled.

He caught himself against the wall.

For a moment, he closed his eyes.

He could hear people screaming.

Then came the warning!

ATMOSPHERIC FAILURE IN SECTOR SEVEN.

Aarav opened his eyes.

“How much time?”

The artificial intelligence did not answer.

“How much time?”

THREE MINUTES, FORTY-TWO SECONDS.

Aarav started running again.

He had spent thirty years studying planetary systems.

He had studied climate instability.

Geological collapse.

Energy weapons.

Orbital bombardment.

He had written papers about the dangers of planetary warfare.

He had warned governments.

He had testified before councils.

He had been ignored.

Now Earth was dying.

Not because the planet itself was weak.

Because humanity had finally discovered how to hurt a world.

The corridor ended at a massive blast door.

Aarav placed his hand against the scanner.

Nothing happened.

“Open.”

IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED.

“Aarav Sen. Senior Planetary Systems Division.”

IDENTIFICATION CONFIRMED.

Nothing.

“Open!”

ACCESS DENIED.

Aarav stared.

Then he remembered.

The security network had been damaged.

He pulled a small device from his pocket.

He connected it to the emergency panel.

The door opened!

Aarav entered.

The room beyond was dark.

There were no windows.

Only a single circular chamber.

At its centre was a machine.

It was not a weapon.

It was not an evacuation system.

It was not a military device.

It was a resonance chamber.

Aarav approached it.

His hands were shaking.

“Start the recording.” The chamber activated.

A holographic display appeared—a map of the Solar System.

Earth.

Mars.

The asteroid belt.

The outer planets.

Then the display expanded!

Beyond the Solar System.

Beyond the known human territories.

Beyond the mapped regions.

Aarav entered a sequence.

The machine rejected it.

He tried again.

The system accepted.

A new image appeared.

A pattern.

A code.

Not mathematical.

Not genetic.

Not digital.

Something else.

Aarav whispered: “The planetary code.”

He had spent eleven years searching for it.

Eleven years trying to understand what the earliest civilisations had sensed but never explained.

Every living world had a pattern.

Every planet, every star, every ecosystem had it.

A resonance.

A frequency.

A code.

The ancient Huaxian texts had called it many things.

The Mandate of Heaven.

The Breath of the World.

The Heavenly Code.

But one ancient name appeared again and again.

Svarg Nagari.

The City of Heaven.

Aarav had always thought it referred to Earth.

Now he wasn’t sure.

He looked at the code.

It was changing.

Something was interfering with it.

Something was—

Aarav froze.

The chamber lights went out.

He looked up.

A sound came from the other side of the room.

A low vibration.

Almost like a heartbeat.

Aarav stepped backward.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

He reached for the emergency light.

The room remained dark.

Then the display came back.

But the map of the Solar System was gone.

In its place was something else.

A shape.

A circle.

A black sphere surrounded by lines of light.

Aarav’s blood ran cold.

He had seen this before.

Not in a laboratory.

Not in a scientific database.

In ancient records.

In fragments recovered from civilizations that had disappeared thousands of years earlier.

The symbol was always associated with the same warning.

DO NOT AWAKEN THE HUNGER.

Aarav whispered:

“No.”

The room shook.

Something moved beneath the floor.

The AI spoke.

UNIDENTIFIED ENERGY DETECTED.

Aarav stared at the symbol.

“Where?”

The answer came.

PLANETARY CORE.

Aarav’s face went pale.

“Earth?”

There was a pause.

Then:

NO.

Aarav looked up.

“Then where?”

The AI’s voice changed.

For the first time in its existence, it sounded uncertain.

EVERYWHERE.

Above him, Earth was burning.

The Fourth World War had entered its final phase.

The atmosphere had been damaged.

The oceans had been poisoned.

The continents were scarred.

The great cities were collapsing.

Humanity was evacuating.

Thousands of ships were leaving orbit.

Millions of people were being transported to artificial habitats.

The survivors believed they were escaping a dying planet.

They did not know they were carrying the consequences of the war with them.

They did not know that something had already noticed them.

Something beyond their universe.

Something that did not see planets as homes.

It saw them as food.

Aarav ran.

The chamber was collapsing.

He carried the data crystal.

Everything he had discovered was stored inside it.

He reached the evacuation terminal.

A transport ship waited.

People were pushing toward it.

Families.

Scientists.

Soldiers.

Children.

Aarav looked at the crowd.

Then he looked back.

At Earth.

For one moment, he remembered the ancient name.

Svarg Nagari.

The City of Heaven.

The planet had never been perfect.

But it had been home.

Aarav entered the ship.

The doors closed.

The vessel launched.

Through the window, Earth became smaller.

The planet turned.

Blue.

White.

Brown.

Beautiful.

Then a flash appeared on the surface.

Aarav watched.

Another.

Then another.

The planet’s atmosphere changed colour.

Something was happening.

Something enormous.

He reached for the communication panel.

“Earth Command, this is Evacuation Vessel 771.”

Static.

“Earth Command, respond.”

Nothing.

He looked at the planet.

And then he saw it.

A dark line.

It appeared across the surface.

Then another.

Then another.

The planet seemed to crack.

Aarav whispered:

“No.”

The ship accelerated.

Earth disappeared behind them.

The survivors watched in silence.

No one spoke.

No one knew what to say.

And somewhere beneath the surface of the dying planet, something ancient awakened.

125 YEARS LATER

The descendants of the survivors would tell the story differently.

They would say humanity had survived.

They would say Earth had been destroyed by war.

They would say the evacuation had saved civilisation.

They would say the asteroid belt had become humanity’s new home.

They would say the stars had welcomed them.

They would be right.

And they would be wrong.

Because the truth was still buried.

Buried beneath the ruined cities.

Buried beneath the oceans.

Buried beneath the planetary crust.

And buried inside the memories of people who had disappeared while searching for it.

The universe had not forgotten Earth.

And neither had the darkness beyond it.
