Replacement

For reasons I still cannot explain, reading about catastrophic experimental hybridization made me think about Kira's ears. Brains are useful organs, but I have never trusted their filing systems.

When Kira became a lamia at ten, most of the obvious changes happened below the waist. Losing her legs and gaining several meters of orange-scaled snake was difficult to overlook. The smaller changes took longer to notice. Her pupils changed. Her teeth changed. Her body temperature became strange. She developed venom glands, better smell, better low-light vision and a pair of slightly pointed ears that hadn't existed before the accident. I discovered those ears approximately three days after she came home. Naturally, I touched them.

Kira: "Stop."

I touched one again.

Leona: "They're pointy."

Kira: "I know."

Leona: "Elf snake."

Kira: "Leona."

I flicked the tip.

Leona: "Snake elf."

That was the final mistake. Kira had only recently learned she possessed paralytic venom. Her doctors had explained very clearly that she was not to bite anyone while the dosage and potency were still being established. Kira interpreted medical guidance creatively. She bit my wrist. Not hard enough to tear much flesh. Just enough for venom.

Within perhaps thirty seconds, eleven-year-old Leona Voss discovered that falling over while remaining completely conscious was an extremely educational experience. Kira stood above me. I couldn't move anything below my shoulders properly.

Leona: "...bitch."

My speech didn't work very well either. Kira smiled. Then she found a marker.

When Mom came into the room twenty minutes later, I was still lying helplessly on the carpet with a mustache, enormous eyebrows, several badly drawn snakes across my forehead and the word NERD written down one cheek. Mom stared. Kira stared back.

Elara: "Kira."

Kira: "She touched my ears."

Apparently this constituted a complete legal defense. Mom did not agree. Neither did the hybrid specialist she called afterward. I regained full movement within two hours. Kira lost access to markers for a month. For the next ten years, every time I reached toward one of her ears she showed me a fang. Effective boundary-setting.

Why was I remembering this while sitting inside an abandoned laboratory reading about a biological nightmare capable of regenerating from catastrophic damage? No idea. Brain being brain. Maybe I missed her. Mostly.

The Chimera archive was enormous. Not one project. A lineage of projects. Years of them.

The final report had been written in 1998, but the research stretched backward through development phases, failed subjects, simulation models and techniques borrowed from other Arcadia programs. I started reading chronologically and abandoned that approach after twenty minutes because whoever organized scientific archives apparently expected their future audience to possess unlimited time and no active search helicopter. I searched by concept instead.

Integration.

Regeneration.

Suppression.

Replacement.

Host stability.

Failure.

That last one produced an impressive number of results. Arcadia had failed creatively. Subjects whose immune systems destroyed the new tissue. Subjects whose new tissue destroyed the old. Subjects where conversion stopped halfway and left incompatible organs competing inside the same body. Neural integrations that caused seizures. Regenerative sequences that produced tumors. Regenerative sequences that kept growing after the original injury healed. Muscle modifications that tore their own attachment points apart. Bone reinforcement that exceeded what tendons could tolerate.

Every failure taught me something. Mostly that attempting what I wanted was an excellent way to die. I read anyway. The helicopter outside had become almost irrelevant. The real danger was on the screen now.

Project Chimera had begun with a relatively understandable goal: produce an adaptive combat hybrid capable of surviving injuries that would disable conventional enhanced soldiers. Arachnid biology had been chosen for structural advantages, venom systems, sensory capabilities and extraordinary potential for distributed neural control. Regenerative sequences had been added from multiple experimental lines. Then Arcadia kept pushing. Phase One supplemented. Phase Two integrated. Phase Three replaced. That word kept appearing. REPLACEMENT. Not attachment. Not augmentation. Replacement.

I pulled the final report onto one monitor and several earlier reports onto another. Subject Zero, later designated the Matriarch, had crossed some threshold Arcadia hadn't intended. The introduced arachnid systems stopped behaving like additions to a human body. They became dominant architecture. Host biology was not merely modified. Large portions were rewritten around the new design. The researchers described it as catastrophic subsumption. I described it differently.

Leona: "You idiots almost solved my problem."

Spider Six looked up from the floor.

Leona: "Not you."

The red optic remained on me. I tapped the screen.

Leona: "Them."

Perfectly clear distinction. I started taking notes. My rabbit conversion had succeeded because the hospital hadn't tried to preserve everything. I had been too badly injured. Large portions of my lower body had effectively been reconstructed around compatible leporid biology. That made the rabbit sequences deeply integrated. Which was why simply suppressing them was so dangerous. You couldn't tell half my new musculoskeletal system to stop being rabbit and expect the remaining human DNA to politely rebuild whatever disappeared.

Removal created absence. Absence killed people. That was what most of Arcadia's secondary conversion failures had gotten wrong. They had approached prior hybridization as contamination. Identify unwanted traits. Suppress them. Introduce replacement. Hope the host survived the transition. Often the host did not.

I opened three failed secondary-integration reports side by side. In one, a canine hybrid had been pushed toward feline expression. The new muscle architecture successfully suppressed portions of the canine phenotype, then destabilized because the nervous system retained incompatible motor pathways. Another involved replacing amphibian regeneration with reptilian regeneration. The original pathway was successfully inhibited. Unfortunately, the replacement activated too slowly. The subject bled to death between systems.

The third was worse. Successful structural replacement. Successful immune acceptance. Successful metabolic transition. Fatal neural collapse. Different systems. Different timelines. That was the problem.

I leaned closer. That sounded reasonable in ordinary medicine. It was probably the responsible approach. Gradual conversion. Monitor each stage. Allow the patient to stabilize. Except my existing hybrid biology would fight that process every step of the way.

Rabbit metabolism supporting rabbit muscle. Rabbit endocrine signaling supporting rabbit skeletal proportions. Rabbit neural adaptations controlling rabbit reflexes. Rabbit regenerative pathways maintaining rabbit tissue. Change one system while leaving the others intact and they tried to drag the body back toward equilibrium. Biology likes equilibrium. Unfortunately, my equilibrium was one meter tall, fragile and legally edible.

I created a fresh page on the tablet. At the top I wrote:

DON'T REMOVE. REPLACE.

Then beneath it:

ALL AT ONCE?

I stared at that second line. That was insane. Therefore it deserved further investigation.

If a single aggressive replacement sequence tried to rewrite too much biology, the host died. Arcadia had proved that repeatedly. But Chimera had demonstrated something different. Multiple aggressive sequences could coexist if they reinforced one another. Structural change supported by metabolic change. Neural change synchronized with sensory change. Immune modulation occurring while new tissues formed. Regeneration repairing the damage produced by the conversion itself.

Not one replacement. A system of replacements. That was what Arcadia had accidentally built into Subject Zero. The problem wasn't simply that Chimera was too aggressive. The problem was that it had been aggressive without sufficient control.

I started pacing. That required approximately six steps before reaching the wall because dwarf rabbit legs did not lend themselves to dramatic laboratory pacing. I turned around. Six more.

Leona: "Okay. Rabbit stays alive because rabbit systems support rabbit systems."

Turn.

Leona: "So don't remove rabbit first."

Turn.

Leona: "Build something stronger beside it."

Turn.

Leona: "Then let that become the new support structure."

I stopped. That was closer. The rabbit genes didn't need to vanish before replacement began. They could remain temporarily. Use them. Let the existing body keep functioning while replacement sequences established themselves. Then gradually suppress old expression as the new architecture took over.

Except gradually returned me to the earlier problem. The body might resist. So the replacement needed to be aggressive. Not one aggressive sequence. Several. Compatible. Coordinated. Enough that when one system changed, the others were changing with it.

A biological coup. That phrase amused me enough that I wrote it down.

Leona: "Hostile takeover."

That was better. My body was a company. Rabbit DNA had acquired controlling interest. I intended to perform a restructuring. Dad would have hated the metaphor. Which made it excellent.

The question became what systems needed replacing. Musculoskeletal architecture. Metabolism. Endocrine signaling. Immune tolerance. Sensory pathways. Neural reflex architecture. Regenerative response. Maybe integument. Probably cardiovascular support depending on whatever final phenotype I selected.

Phenotype. I stopped again. That was the first time I really allowed myself to think beyond not rabbit. What did I want to become? Human again? The obvious answer. Restore my old height. Old face. Old strength. Old body. Maybe Arcadia could theoretically do it.

But I had just killed three C-Rank predators because I was tired of living in a body that needed permission to survive them. Was ordinary human enough? I pushed that thought away. Too early. First problem: Survive conversion.

Arcadia's records were very clear about what an aggressive multi-system rewrite did to a body. It hurt. That was understating it. Bones changed shape. Muscles tore and rebuilt. Nerves extended. Organs altered. Blood chemistry shifted. Immune systems panicked. Cells died in enormous numbers and had to be replaced faster than systemic failure accumulated.

Even standard hybrid conversion was performed under heavy anesthesia, medical supervision and life support. What I was imagining made standard conversion look polite. No healthy human body could survive it unaided. That should have ended the idea. Then I looked at the Chimera report again. Regenerative abilities exceed all projections. That sentence changed everything.

I opened the regenerative research tree. There were dozens of branches.

Reptilian strains.

Amphibian strains.

Experimental mammalian repair factors.

Accelerated clotting.

Stem-cell activation.

Telomere management.

Cancer suppression.

Most had serious problems. The Matriarch's regeneration didn't. Or rather, it had an entirely different collection of catastrophic problems. But surviving tissue damage was not one of them. Arcadia had engineered something capable of being injured faster than ordinary biology could tolerate and repairing that injury almost immediately. The final report even described conventional destruction attempts failing because damage simply vanished faster than researchers could make it permanent.

I stared at the screen. There it was. Not the solution. The missing prerequisite.

Leona: "Regeneration first."

My heart began beating faster. Not first chronologically. First logically. Any replacement design I created needed a regeneration system powerful enough to keep me alive while everything else tore itself apart.

Not ordinary hospital regeneration. Not heal faster. Something aggressive. Something capable of repairing conversion damage while the conversion was still causing it. The regenerative system would need to activate with the serum, remain dominant through the transition, then stabilize afterward so I didn't become a tumor with opinions.

I searched for stabilized variants. Reptilian strain notes appeared. Promising. Not enough alone. Arcadia had combined multiple repair pathways inside Chimera. I downloaded everything. The tablet storage warning appeared. I deleted three movies. Priorities.

Then another problem surfaced. Power. The laboratory equipment existed, but most of it was disconnected from auxiliary supply. I could drain containment power to run the serum systems. Absolutely not. I might have been desperate, but I wasn't stupid enough to shut down a containment field labeled PERMANENT BIOLOGICAL LOCKDOWN because I wanted prettier genetics. I needed independent generation.

That thought sent me somewhere much safer. The farm. Dad's workshop. A tractor alternator on the bench. An irrigation motor he'd been rebuilding. Copper coils. Old batteries. I remembered sitting beside him while he explained emergency generation systems after a storm knocked power out for three days.

John: "Electricity doesn't care whether the machine was designed to be a generator."

Leona: "That's not completely true."

John: "No, but it's memorable."

Leona: "That's cheating."

John: "Teaching."

Dad had shown me how an induction motor could be repurposed. How alternators could be driven externally. How farm equipment gave you an absurd collection of shafts, bearings, belts and engines that could be convinced to perform jobs their manufacturers had never intended. There were enough abandoned agricultural machines scattered across rural Texas to build something. Maybe not elegant. A small fuel engine driving a salvaged alternator. Battery bank for smoothing. Inverter. Isolation transformer. Could work. If Arcadia had maintenance equipment left inside, even better.

I opened the facility inventory. Old emergency generators. One listed unavailable. One listed removed during closure. A third:

MAINTENANCE UNIT 2B - STATUS UNKNOWN.

I smiled.

Leona: "There you are."

Future problem. For now I returned to biology. Hours began dissolving. I read until individual reports blurred together. Subjects. Percentages. Failure rates. Expression curves. I filled page after page with diagrams. Rabbit system here. Replacement pathway there. Regeneration beneath everything.

The final idea gradually stopped looking like a cure. A cure implied returning something to its original state. I wasn't sick. I had been changed. The solution was to change again. But deliberately this time. I wrote:

PRIMARY REQUIREMENT: COMPLETE SUPPRESSION OF LEPORID EXPRESSION

Then:

METHOD: MULTI-SEQUENCE DOMINANT REPLACEMENT

Then:

SURVIVAL REQUIREMENT: EXTREME REGENERATION THROUGH FULL TRANSITION

I leaned back. Read it. Read it again. My hands were trembling. Not from fear. Not entirely. This could work. It could also kill me so violently that whoever eventually found Arcadia would need to identify my remains through the tablet sitting beside them.

But for the first time, I understood why the earlier attempts had failed. They were trying to replace biology without giving the patient the ability to survive being replaced. Chimera had accidentally solved that half. The Matriarch wasn't merely powerful because Arcadia had given her more aggressive traits. She could become something so completely new because regeneration allowed her body to survive the process of ceasing to be what it had been. That was the principle.

I didn't need her design. God, no. I needed the lesson hidden inside the disaster.

Replace aggressively. Replace coherently. Regenerate faster than the transition can kill you. Then stabilize everything before regeneration itself becomes the next problem.

I looked down at my tiny white-furred hands. Rabbit. For now.

Leona: "Okay."

Spider Six rotated its optic toward me. I smiled. A tired, filthy, probably slightly unhinged smile.

Leona: "I think I know how to kill the rabbit."

And somewhere beneath my feet, behind layers of reinforced steel and failing containment fields, something old remained alive enough for Arcadia to keep seventeen percent of its remaining power devoted to making sure it never reached me.
