Pei Xi spotted her best friend waiting at the entrance and happily walked over—but as soon as she reached Peng Jiao, her friend immediately started scolding her.
Pei Xi’s mind went blank for a moment, only realizing at the end that it was all a misunderstanding.
“Lottery? What lottery? I’ve never even bought one! The biggest prize I ever won as a kid was just a free drink!” she thought in disbelief.
Laughing at the idea, Pei Xi grabbed Peng Jiao’s hand and led her inside.
“Let’s go inside first, we’ll talk about it later,” she said. Chatting at the door wasn’t going to work.
As they walked, Peng Jiao couldn’t help but notice how transformed Pei Xi seemed—radiant, refined, and dressed in clothes that looked far more expensive than what she used to wear at school.
Curious, Peng Jiao practically dragged Pei Xi to a window-side table. Once the dishes were ordered, she leaned forward eagerly:
“Alright, spill it! What have you been up to? How did you suddenly get rich? The car, the clothes, the bag—where did all this come from?”
Pei Xi raised her hand, letting Peng Jiao see the ring on her finger.
“I got married. Lucky me—I caught myself a ‘golden husband.’”
She didn’t want to hide it from her friend. With a child on the way, it was better to be honest now than later.
Peng Jiao’s eyes widened as she stared at the diamond ring. She grabbed Pei Xi’s hand for a closer look:
“Is that real? How did this happen? You got married? Tell me everything!”
Pei Xi paused, wanting to first hear about Peng Jiao and Xu Haoyang.
“My story isn’t urgent. I’ll tell you later. You first—how are things with Xu Haoyang? Has your family agreed to your relationship?”
Peng Jiao rolled her eyes:
“Well, my dad’s temporarily agreed. But if Xu Haoyang doesn’t accomplish something in the time he set, my dad won’t let me suffer alongside him.”
Pei Xi frowned:
“Accomplish what? Isn’t he working at the family company? Does he want to start his own business?”
Peng Jiao wrinkled her nose:
“Yes, you know Xu Haoyang—he’s always been into e-sports since college. He promised my dad he’d achieve something, bring home a trophy. He’s been in a sort of retreat recently; I dare not disturb him.”
Pei Xi understood—there was an older brother involved, explaining why he didn’t just work at the family company.
“Okay, enough about me. Now tell me your story. What happened to you recently?”
Pei Xi recounted everything: that day out drinking, finding the child’s biological father, and eventually marrying him.
Peng Jiao listened, astonished. She hadn’t expected her best friend’s life to be so eventful—this was like a romance novel come to life.
“So now you’re living with the father of your child?” Peng Jiao asked.
Pei Xi nodded:
“Of course. He has a house—why should I rent? And since it’s his child, he wants to be responsible. Living together makes it easier for him to take care of me.”
Peng Jiao nodded approvingly:
“Exactly! Don’t be like those silly TV girls who raise kids alone just to feel proud. The father’s alive, wealthy, and capable—why do it all by yourself? Even if you don’t marry him, you’d at least secure support.”
Pei Xi agreed wholeheartedly:
“Right? I just graduated, couldn’t afford a child on my own. The doctor said I couldn’t terminate the pregnancy, so I had no choice but to rely on the father. Luckily, he’s responsible.”
Seeing Pei Xi’s good situation, Peng Jiao sincerely said:
“Looks like your husband treats you well. You made the right move. No more worries about livelihood—you can focus on your child.”
She added excitedly:
“Among us, you’re the first to get married! If there’s ever a wedding, I want to be your bridesmaid!”
Pei Xi smiled faintly:
“Got it. If that day comes, I won’t forget. But let’s attend your wedding first—you know our relationship is mostly for the child. Whether it lasts, we’ll see.”
Peng Jiao shook her head:
“Nonsense! Look at you—besides your background, you’re a beauty. Men are visual creatures. Add a child, and you’re golden! I’m confident you’ll keep him hooked.”
She realized she’d forgotten something:
“By the way, what’s your husband’s name? What does he look like? Handsome?”
Pei Xi summarized:
“He’s Si Ruohan, owns a company, good-looking.”
Peng Jiao frowned, vaguely familiar. Where had she heard that name? But the food arrived, and hunger distracted her.
“Since you’re a rich lady now, lunch is on you,” she teased.
Pei Xi nodded:
“No problem. If it’s not enough, we can order more.”
Peng Jiao laughed:
“Don’t think one meal is enough! I’ll hit you up more next time!”
Pei Xi laughed heartily:
“Go ahead, I’m not short on money now!”
The two friends ate and chatted, just like their college days, full of laughter and gossip.
