The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she felt.
She quickly changed her clothes and decided to go downstairs for a look.
In the dead of night, her footsteps were exceptionally clear.
Even though she tried to walk as lightly as possible, they still sounded deafeningly loud to her.
Just as she reached the ground floor, she saw the butler standing at the entrance to the main hall in his pajamas, looking as if he’d rushed out.
He was staring at her with a solemn expression, as if he had been waiting specifically for her.
His stern, cold demeanor made Cheng Xi a bit apprehensive.
Quisen gazed at her impassively.
“Go back to sleep.
Don’t wander around at night.”
“Um, about that…” Cheng Xi raised a hand to point outside, unsure how to explain herself.
Quisen shook his head.
“The Master is fine.
You don’t need to worry.
Go back to sleep.”
“Oh.”
Since he had said as much, Cheng Xi decided not to worry about it.
She returned to the bedroom and lay down in her little nest.
Just a dozen minutes ago, she had been incredibly drowsy, but now she wasn’t the least bit sleepy.
Tossing and turning, she just couldn’t fall asleep.
Cheng Xi sighed in exasperation.
‘What is wrong with me!’
She didn’t know how long she lay awake before she finally, groggily drifted off.
But she didn’t sleep soundly.
After yesterday’s experience, her eyes snapped open the moment the door creaked.
Cheng Xi’s lip twitched.
‘I knew it,’ she thought.
‘That hairy spider is back!’
A new round of utter chaos began, and time flew by in a frenzy.
Before she knew it, she had been in the castle for four days.
The strange thing was, ever since the day her Outer Space master had walked in on her bathing, he had rarely returned.
The bedroom had practically become her own.
His absence was a good thing for her, though.
No one was around to deliberately tease her, pinch her cheeks, or pull her hair.
She was waited on hand and foot, with clothes brought to her and meals served.
If it weren’t for that spider, being a pet really wouldn’t be so bad.
But, of course, there was that spider.
“This is driving me crazy! Can you just stay away from me!”
Even though she’d had a few days to get used to it, the sight of the spider still made Cheng Xi’s skin crawl with discomfort.
Mao Mao let out a soft HISS, chasing her with gusto. Visit g.com for the full chapter.
Playing this game with its new friend was its favorite thing now.
‘Don’t be fooled into thinking spiders have no intelligence.
Hmph.
It just loved watching the master’s new favorite pet scurry around in terror.’
‘We’re both the master’s pets, so how come she gets a bigger nest *and* gets to eat at the table?’
‘It’s not fair!’
The more Mao Mao thought about it, the more energetically it gave chase.
‘It was going to make this new pet its subordinate, or else it would trap her in its webbing.’
‘It would keep her trapped until she finally bowed her head in submission.’
Cheng Xi looked at the sticky webbing sprayed all over her, feeling both furious and repulsed.
‘Is this any way for a person to fucking live!’
“Mary! Mani! Help me!”
Hearing Cheng Xi cry out for them, Mary Mani immediately dropped what they were doing and rushed over to free her from the tangled webbing.
They were quite surprised by this.
They hadn’t expected the human to learn their names in just a few short days.
Of course, she could only say their names; she couldn’t form other sentences yet.
At first, they had thought it was sweet how the two pets played together every day.
It was only in the last couple of days that they realized something was off—that Mao Mao was actually bullying Cheng Xi.
Seeing how terrified Cheng Xi was of Mao Mao.
Mani’s heart ached for her.
“Poor Cheng Xi,” she said sympathetically.
“You’re so timid. Mao Mao bullies you every day. You should just give it a good thrashing! Beat it until it’s too scared to chase you anymore.”
Compared to the ugly spider, they were naturally on Cheng Xi’s side.
As she spoke, she shielded Cheng Xi behind her and scolded Mao Mao, who was trying to approach.
Mary was even more direct.
She found a stick and handed it to her.
“Cheng Xi, take this! Go on, hit it!”
Cheng Xi thought about it and agreed.
‘After all,’ she reasoned, ‘when the big spider bullies me, that rotten master of mine doesn’t care.
We might as well just fight it out.’
The bullying over the last few days had certainly stoked her anger.
And from her observations, she’d noticed the big spider didn’t actually bite people.
With that thought, she had nothing left to fear.
She immediately raised the stick and brought it down hard on Mao Mao’s big head!
WHACK!
Mao Mao let out a pained SHRIEK, and a hairy leg shot out reflexively, pricking Cheng Xi.
In just a few seconds, the spot where the leg had pricked her started turning purple and black.
Cheng Xi was stunned.
Even Mary Mani hadn’t expected Mao Mao’s venom to spread so quickly!
“What do we do? I think Cheng Xi’s been poisoned!” Mani panicked, watching the color drain from Cheng Xi’s face.
Mary was the calmer of the two.
She immediately contacted their Master.
“Master, this is bad! Cheng Xi was pricked by Mao Mao, and she’s been poisoned! Ah—she just fainted!”
On the other end of the Light Brain, Hotte’s expression changed in an instant.
Don’t move her.
I’m coming back right now!”
“Yes, Master!” The call ended, and Mary’s face turned white as a sheet.
But Cheng Xi’s face was even paler.
Within two seconds of being pricked, her entire body was paralyzed.
She couldn’t even make a sound.
The venom quickly invaded her brain.
Before she lost consciousness, a final, foul curse echoed in her mind.
Cheng Xi suddenly collapsed, and the hearts of Mary and Mani plummeted.
Mani cried out in panic, “Mao Mao, look what you’ve done!”
Mao Mao froze, helpless.
Its grayish-green eyes were fixed on the poisoned, unconscious human.
If a spider could have an expression, its face would have been deathly pale.
‘What have I done?
I’ve killed someone!
The master is going to kill me!’
Terrified, Mao Mao collapsed to the floor, not daring to move an inch.
Following the Master’s orders, Mary and Mani didn’t dare move Cheng Xi.
They could only wait anxiously for his return.
They prayed fervently in their hearts, begging that Cheng Xi would be all right.
Even though they had only known her for a few days, they had grown very fond of the lively human.
They would be devastated if her vibrant life was extinguished just like that.
At the same time, they were consumed by self-blame and guilt.
They had forgotten that humans have no resistance to the venom.
This was all their fault!
The more emotional Mani had already burst into tears.
She was afraid of being punished by the Master, but she was even more terrified that Cheng Xi might actually die…
“SOB… I’m so sorry, Cheng Xi… It’s all our fault… We shouldn’t have given you such a reckless idea… You’re going to be okay, Cheng Xi, you have to be…”
Mani wailed, blaming herself, while Mary’s eyes grew red.
They looked as helpless as children who had done something terribly wrong.
‘The Master was away on business, and Butler Quisen wasn’t here either.
What were they supposed to do, all alone?’
Time ticked by, second by agonizing second.
Cheng Xi’s body temperature dropped little by little, and with it, the two maids’ hearts sank further and further.
Finally, they heard the sound of a battleship streaking through the sky outside the castle.
Mary and Mani were overjoyed.
‘Thank goodness, the Master is back!’
Hotte leaped down from the battleship, which was dozens of meters in the air, and rushed inside.
Mary and Mani looked as if they’d seen their savior.
“Master—”
Hotte had no time for them.
His first priority was to check the spread of the venom in Cheng Xi’s body.
