The laboratory remained silent.

No one spoke.

The only sound was the steady hum of the emergency lights as they flickered overhead.

On the dusty floor lay two chess pieces.

A black knight.

A white queen.

Ethan slowly knelt and picked them up.

“They’re not random,” he murmured.

“They mean something.”

Professor Hayes nodded thoughtfully.

“In chess, every piece has a purpose.”

“The knight moves unpredictably.”

“The queen is the strongest piece on the board.”

Noah scratched his head.

“So…”

“…who’s playing chess with our lives?”

No one answered.

Because none of them knew.

Ariana looked around the old laboratory once more.

The hooded figure had disappeared as if they had never been there.

Only a faint breeze drifted through the open doorway.

“They knew we’d come,” she whispered.

Ethan looked at Daniel’s letter again.

“And they wanted us to.”

Professor Hayes folded the letter carefully.

“Which means we’re following a path they expected.”

“Every clue…”

“…every message…”

“…every warning…”

“They’ve been one step ahead.”

Noah picked up the small data chip Project AURORA had revealed.

It was no larger than a coin.

“How do we even read this?”

Professor Hayes smiled faintly.

“The old robotics laboratory had a dedicated archive computer.”

She pointed toward a dusty workstation in the corner.

“If it still works…”

“…this might answer some of our questions.”

Everyone hurried over.

The computer looked ancient compared to the modern equipment in the engineering building.

Dust coated the keyboard.

Spiderwebs stretched across the monitor.

Noah rubbed his hands together excitedly.

“My time has come.”

“You’ve repaired computers this old?” Ariana asked.

“I’ve repaired older.”

“You have?”

“No.”

“But how hard can it be?”

Claire sighed.

“That’s exactly what worries me.”

After nearly twenty minutes of reconnecting cables, cleaning dust, and replacing a damaged power cord, Noah finally pressed the power button.

Nothing happened.

He frowned.

“Come on…”

He pressed it again.

Still nothing.

Then…

A quiet mechanical hum filled the room.

The monitor flickered.

A green loading screen appeared.

Noah threw both hands into the air.

“I am officially a genius!”

Claire crossed her arms.

“It took you twenty-three minutes.”

“A genius needs time.”

The system finally loaded.

A password prompt appeared.

ENTER AUTHORIZATION CODE

Everyone looked at one another.

Professor Hayes sighed.

“I don’t know it.”

Noah tried several obvious passwords.

Nothing.

Ariana looked thoughtfully at Daniel’s notebook.

“What about…”

She remembered the old message they had found.

“Never trust the backup system.”

She flipped through the notebook until she found a page covered in small sketches.

At the bottom was one handwritten phrase.

Aurora Never Sleeps

She typed it.

The screen flashed red.

ACCESS DENIED

“Close,” Ethan whispered.

“But not enough.” New chapters come out on g.com first.

Ariana stared at Project AURORA across the room.

The robot…

The notebook…

Then she smiled.

“The robot’s name.”

She typed a new password.

PROJECTAURORA

The computer paused.

For several long seconds…

Nothing happened.

Then—

ACCESS GRANTED

Noah’s jaw dropped.

“I quit.”

Professor Hayes smiled proudly.

“Excellent thinking.”

Folders appeared one after another.

Most contained research data.

Medical robotics designs.

Competition reports.

But one folder stood out.

Its title simply read:

CONFIDENTIAL

Ethan clicked it.

Inside was only one video file.

The recording began immediately.

Static covered the screen.

Then…

A young man appeared.

Daniel Carter.

He looked tired.

Worried.

But determined.

“Hello.”

“If you’re watching this…”

“…then something has happened.”

Ethan stared at the screen without blinking.

It was the first time he had seen his brother in years.

Daniel continued.

“I don’t have much time.”

“I discovered someone has been stealing our research.”

The room fell silent.

“I don’t know who.”

“But I know they have help inside the university.”

Daniel looked over his shoulder before continuing.

“If anything happens during the competition…”

“…it won’t be an accident.”

Professor Hayes covered her mouth.

“He knew…”

Daniel sighed.

“I’ve hidden the original research.”

“If you’re watching this…”

“…please protect my team.”

The video suddenly glitched.

The image froze.

Then another person entered the frame.

Only their shoulder was visible.

Daniel looked toward them.

His expression changed instantly.

“You?”

The recording cut off.

Everyone stared at the blank screen.

Noah whispered,

“Who was that?”

Ethan slowly rewound the final seconds.

The figure’s face wasn’t visible.

But…

There was one clear detail.

A silver watch.

Engraved with the university emblem.

Professor Hayes frowned.

“I’ve seen that watch before.”

“Where?” Ariana asked.

“I can’t remember.”

Just then…

Claire quietly stepped away from the group.

She slipped into the hallway outside the laboratory.

Her hands trembled as she pulled Daniel’s journal from her backpack.

She hadn’t told anyone she had taken it.

Not yet.

She slowly opened the first page.

Inside was a photograph.

A younger Claire.

She couldn’t have been older than eight.

Standing beside her father.

And next to them…

Professor Adrian Wells.

“What…”

She turned another page.

There, in Daniel’s handwriting, were the words:

If you’re Claire…

none of this was your fault.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Daniel knew me…”

she whispered.

Footsteps echoed behind her.

She quickly hid the journal.

“Ethan?”

She turned.

But no one was there.

Only the empty corridor.

Back inside the laboratory…

Noah continued searching through the computer files.

Suddenly…

A hidden folder appeared.

Its name had been encrypted.

He clicked it.

A map of Northfield University filled the screen.

Several buildings were highlighted.

The engineering building.

The old clock tower.

The archives.

Then one final location blinked red.

RESTRICTED ACCESS

SUBLEVEL B

Ariana frowned.

“I’ve never heard of Sublevel B.”

Professor Hayes looked genuinely surprised.

“Neither have I.”

“But according to this map…”

She pointed toward the screen.

“…it’s directly beneath the university hospital research center.”

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“The medical research building?”

Professor Hayes nodded slowly.

“It shouldn’t even exist.”

Suddenly—

The computer speakers crackled.

A distorted voice echoed through the room.

“If you’ve reached this point…”

“…leave now.”

The screen turned black.

Then one sentence appeared in bright white letters.

CHECKMATE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.

Before Noah could react…

The computer shut itself down.

The laboratory lights flickered again.

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.

As everyone prepared to leave, Ethan noticed Ariana standing alone near one of the dusty windows.

“You okay?”

She smiled softly.

“Just thinking.”

“About what?”

She looked out toward the rain.

“When I first came to Northfield…”

“…I thought university would only be about studying.”

She laughed quietly.

“I never imagined robots…”

“…hidden laboratories…”

“…or mysterious chess pieces.”

Ethan laughed too.

“And yet…”

“Here we are.”

She looked at him.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For always showing up.”

Ethan smiled.

“I’ll always show up.”

Neither of them realized how close they were standing.

Or that Noah had just walked back into the room.

He quietly looked at Claire.

Without saying a word, he slowly pointed toward Ethan and Ariana.

Claire forced a small smile.

But inside…

Her heart ached.

Not because Ethan liked someone else.

But because she now realized the danger surrounding Ariana was real.

And she was one of the few people who knew just how dangerous it could become.

Far away, inside a dark office hidden beneath the university, someone watched the laboratory through an old security camera.

The mysterious figure removed their hood for the first time.

Only their eyes were visible in the reflection of the monitor.

They picked up a white king chess piece and placed it beside the black knight and white queen already arranged on the desk.

“The opening is over,” the stranger said quietly.

“It’s time for the endgame to begin.”
