For three heartbeats, nobody moved.

The ancient kingdom beneath the mountain had become unnaturally silent.

The thousands of wolves that had gathered inside the palace had stopped growling.Full novel: WOLVES OF THE BLOOD MOON — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The soldiers stood frozen with their weapons lowered.

Even the blue flames along the walls seemed to shrink away from the darkness spreading across the ceiling.

Kael stared upward.

Through the enormous crack above the palace, he could see the Blood Moon.

Except it was no longer red.

It was black.

Completely black.

Around it floated enormous shadows.

They moved slowly across the heavens, too large to understand.

Then the colossal silver eye appeared again.

It looked down through the clouds.

Looking at him.

Only him.

Kael felt something inside his chest answer.

His knees nearly buckled.

Mara grabbed his arm.

“Kael.”

“I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.”

He looked at her.

For once, she wasn’t trying to hide her fear.

Neither was he.

Queen Lyssara lowered her sword.

Her golden eyes remained fixed upon the sky.

“What is that?”

Seraphine whispered the answer.

“The First Mother.”

A murmur passed through the wolves.

Even Aldren looked shaken.

Lyssara turned toward Seraphine.

“You said the First Mother was a legend.”

“I was wrong.”

“How could something that large exist?”

Seraphine stared at the sky.

“Because it isn’t alive in the way we understand life.”

Kael frowned.

“Then what is it?”

His mother looked at him.

“The beginning.”

The word echoed through the chamber.

“The beginning of what?”

Seraphine swallowed.

“Everything that came before the wolves.”

A low vibration passed through the mountain.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Then the voice returned.

MOON-BORN.

Kael’s entire body went rigid.

The voice wasn’t coming from above anymore.

It was inside his mind.

COME TO ME.

Kael closed his eyes.

Images flashed before him.

A vast silver ocean.

A world without humans.

A world without wolves.

A world without mountains.

Then a single creature appeared.

It had no recognizable shape.

It was light and shadow at the same time.

From its body came countless threads of silver energy.

The threads spread across the empty world.

Some became stars.

Some became rivers.

Some became forests.

Others became living creatures.

Kael watched as one thread became the first wolf.

Then another.

Then another.

The vision changed.

He saw the First Wolf.

The creature beneath the mountain.

It was young.

Not evil.

Not monstrous.

It followed the First Mother like a child.

Then something happened.

The First Wolf grew.

It became powerful.

Hungry.

It wanted more.

It wanted the power of the moon.

The vision shattered.

Kael opened his eyes.

Mara was staring at him.

“What did you see?”

Kael breathed heavily.

“I saw the beginning.”

“Of the wolves?”

“Everything.”

Seraphine stepped closer.

“What did you learn?”

Kael looked at her.

“The First Wolf wasn’t the first.”

Seraphine nodded.

“No.”

“And the thing above us created it.”

“Yes.”

Kael looked toward the ceiling.

“Then why is it here?”

Seraphine’s expression darkened.

“Because it believes you stole something from it.”

Kael’s brow furrowed.

“What?”

“The Moon.”

Silence.

Kael shook his head.

“I don’t understand.”

“You don’t remember everything yet.”

Aldren stepped forward.

“Because your memories were sealed when you died.”

Kael turned toward him.

“Can you unlock them?”

Aldren’s expression became grim.

“I don’t know.”

“You should know.”

“I was not the one who sealed them.”

“Then who was?”

Aldren looked at Seraphine.

She answered.

“You did.”

Kael stared at her.

“I sealed my own memories?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you knew you would be reborn.”

Kael frowned.

“And?”

“You knew the First Wolf would try to find you.”

Mara stepped closer.

“That still doesn’t explain why Kael can’t remember.”

Seraphine looked at her.

“If he remembered everything immediately, the First Wolf would remember everything too.”

Kael’s expression changed.

“You mean…”

“The creature is connected to you.”

Seraphine nodded.

“Every memory you recover weakens the wall between your soul and its.”

Kael looked toward his chest.

“So if I remember too much…”

“You could become it.”

The words hung in the air.

Kael stared at his hands.

For a moment, he remembered the creature’s smile.

This time, you will choose me.

He clenched his fists.

“I won’t.”

Seraphine touched his shoulder.

“You don’t know that.”

Kael looked at her.

“I know who I am.”

She smiled sadly.

“Do you?”

Before Kael could answer, a howl erupted from outside the palace.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

The wolves began moving.

Lyssara raised her sword.

“Prepare the packs.”

One of her commanders approached.

“For battle?”

Lyssara looked upward.

“No.”

She pointed at Kael.

“Protect the Moon-Born.”

Kael frowned.

“Why?”

The queen turned toward him.

“Because whatever is above us has just changed the rules.”

“What rules?”

Lyssara’s expression became grim.

“The old laws of the packs are gone.”

She pointed toward the black moon.

“The First Mother has awakened.”

The palace doors opened.

Kael stepped outside.

The kingdom beneath the mountain had transformed.

The ancient city was no longer silent.

Thousands of wolves filled its streets.

Some stood on rooftops.

Others gathered around the enormous central square.

Blue flames burned in every tower.

But above the city was darkness.

A massive black cloud had descended into the cavern.

Inside it moved shapes.

Too many to count.

Kael could hear whispers.

Not words.

Thoughts.

Fear.

Anger.

Hunger.

The wolves were sensing the same presence he was.

Mara walked beside him.

“Do you feel that?”

Kael nodded.

“It’s everywhere.”

“Does it know we’re here?”

Kael looked upward.

“It knows.”

A shadow moved.

Something enormous passed behind the clouds.

The cavern ceiling trembled.

Then a beam of silver light struck the center of the city.

It hit the ground with such force that every wolf fell backward.

Kael remained standing.

At the center of the light appeared a woman.

She looked human.

Almost.

She was incredibly tall.

Her silver hair floated around her without wind.

Her skin seemed to glow.

Her eyes were completely white.

She wore a gown that appeared to be made from moonlight.

Kael’s heart stopped.

He knew her.

Not from memory.

From blood.

The First Mother looked at him.

“Come.”

Kael didn’t move.

The woman tilted her head.

“Why do you resist?”

Kael’s voice was steady.

“Because I don’t know you.”

A faint smile appeared.

“I know you.”

“Who are you?”

“I am the mother of your blood.”

Kael frowned.

“My mother is standing beside me.”

The First Mother glanced at Seraphine.

“She is the mother of your body.”

Then her eyes returned to Kael.

“I am the mother of what sleeps within you.”

The mark on Kael’s forehead burned.

The First Mother extended her hand.

“Come to me.”

Kael took a step backward.

“No.”

The entire city fell silent.

The First Mother looked surprised.

“You refuse?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because every creature I’ve met since awakening has wanted something from me.”

Her smile disappeared.

“And you are no different.”

Kael pointed toward her.

“You want whatever is inside me.”

The First Mother tilted her head.

“I want what belongs to me.”

“What belongs to you?”

“The Moon.”

Kael’s blood ran cold.

He suddenly remembered the vision.

The silver threads.

The First Wolf.

The moon.

Something clicked.

“The Moon Mother’s power.”

The First Mother nodded.

“She stole it.”

Kael shook his head.

“No.”

The First Mother stepped forward.

“She betrayed me.”

“You created the Moon Mother.”

“Yes.”

“You gave her the moon’s power.”

“Yes.”

“Then why call it stolen?”

The First Mother’s eyes darkened.

“Because she gave it to you.”

Kael froze.

Mara stared at him.

Seraphine looked away.

Kael turned toward his mother.

“What does she mean?”

Seraphine didn’t answer.

“Mother.”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When we had escaped.”

Kael shook his head.

“Tell me now.”

Seraphine closed her eyes.

“The Moon Mother didn’t simply sacrifice herself to seal the First Wolf.”

Kael waited.

“She transferred the last portion of her power into you.”

The First Mother spoke.

“She gave my blood to a mortal.”

Kael looked at his hands.

“Why?”

“Because she believed you could protect it.”

The First Mother stepped forward.

“And you failed.”

Kael felt anger rising.

“I was a child.”

“You were a king.”

“I was murdered.”

“You were defeated.”

Kael’s eyes flashed.

“No.”

The ground beneath his feet cracked.

“I chose to die.”

The First Mother stared at him.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared in her expression.

Kael remembered.

A battlefield.

The Moon Mother kneeling before him.

Blood covering her hands.

Her voice.

You must die before he takes the power.

Kael had understood.

He had driven the blade into his own chest.

The power had entered him.

The First Wolf had been trapped.

His soul had become the prison.

But the Moon Mother’s final act had done something else.

She had hidden the moon’s power inside him.

Aldren had tried to take it.

He had failed.

The First Wolf had tried to take it.

It had failed.

Now the First Mother wanted it.

Kael looked toward the woman made of moonlight.

“You can’t have it.”

Her expression hardened.

“You cannot deny your creator.”

Kael raised his head.

“I can deny anyone.”

The First Mother lifted her hand.

The city shook.

Thousands of wolves fell to their knees.

Kael remained standing.

Mara remained standing.

Seraphine remained standing.

Aldren struggled but remained upright.

The First Mother looked at them.

“Then I will take it.”

Silver light exploded across the city.

Kael felt something grab his soul.

He screamed.

Mara shouted his name.

His body lifted from the ground.

Images flooded his mind.

He saw the ancient kingdom.

He saw the Moon Mother.

He saw Aldren.

He saw the First Wolf.

But this time he saw something different.

He saw himself standing before the First Mother.

A thousand years ago.

The First Mother had offered him a choice.

Serve me, and I will make you eternal.

Kael’s ancient self had refused.

I don’t want eternity.

The First Mother had become furious.

Then you will die.

The vision changed.

Kael saw himself stealing something from her.

A glowing sphere.

A fragment of moonlight.

He carried it to the Moon Mother.

The Moon Mother had placed the sphere inside his chest.

Kael understood.

He had not stolen the moon’s power.

He had been entrusted with it.

The First Mother had lied.

She had never intended to protect the wolves.

She wanted to reclaim the power and use it to erase free will from every creature connected to the moon.

Kael opened his eyes.

“You lied.”

The First Mother looked down at him.

“About what?”

“The Moon Mother.”

Her expression changed.

“She was not a thief.”

“She protected the power from you.”

Silence.

Kael’s eyes began glowing.

“She knew what you would do.”

The First Mother raised her hand.

“Enough.”

Kael’s body began falling.

Mara screamed.

“KAEL!”

Something inside him awakened.

Not the First Wolf.

Something else.

A silver wolf.

Its eyes were white.

Its fur shimmered like moonlight.

It stood behind Kael’s soul.

Kael stared at it.

The wolf stared back.

Then it spoke.

You remember me.

Kael’s eyes widened.

“The Moon Mother.”

The wolf nodded.

I left you one final gift.

“What?”

A choice.

The silver wolf dissolved into light.

Kael’s eyes opened.

He was standing in the city.

The First Mother’s power was still holding him.

But now something had changed.

A silver mark spread across his chest.

Mara stared.

“What is that?”

Kael looked down.

A crescent surrounded by three stars had appeared over his heart.

The First Mother recoiled.

“No.”

Kael understood.

This wasn’t simply a mark.

It was a seal.

His seal.

The Moon Mother’s final gift.

The First Mother raised both hands.

“Give it to me!”

Kael shook his head.

“No.”

He reached toward the mark.

“I don’t think you understand.”

The power surged through him.

“I’ve spent my whole life being told what I am.”

Silver light erupted.

“But nobody gets to decide what I become.”

The First Mother’s expression twisted.

Kael roared.

The silver energy exploded outward.

The clouds above the kingdom shattered.

The First Mother was thrown backward.

For one impossible moment, the enormous figure became transparent.

Then the cavern ceiling closed around her.

She disappeared.

Silence returned.

Kael dropped to his knees.

Mara rushed toward him.

“Kael!”

He looked up.

“I’m alive.”

She laughed through tears.

“You’re an idiot.”

“Probably.”

She helped him stand.

Across the city, the wolves slowly rose.

Lyssara stared upward.

“What did he just do?”

Seraphine answered quietly.

“He rejected the First Mother.”

Aldren looked at Kael.

“And awakened the Moon’s final power.”

Kael heard him.

“What does that mean?”

Aldren looked toward the black moon.

“It means she will return.”

Kael frowned.

“She?”

“The First Mother.”

Mara looked upward.

“How soon?”

Aldren’s answer was grim.

“She doesn’t need to return.”

Kael stared.

“What?”

Aldren pointed toward the city.

“Look.”

Kael followed his gaze.

The ancient wolves were changing.

Some transformed into humans.

Others became enormous beasts.

But all of them were staring at Kael.

Not with fear.

With worship.

Lyssara approached.

She lowered herself to one knee.

Then another wolf knelt.

Then another.

Soon thousands of wolves had bowed.

Kael stared at them.

Lyssara raised her head.

“The Moon-Born has awakened.”

Kael shook his head.

“I’m not your king.”

Lyssara smiled.

“You don’t get to choose that.”

Kael’s expression hardened.

“Watch me.”

Lyssara laughed.

“Then choose something else.”

Kael looked around.

“What?”

“Choose what happens next.”

The queen stood.

“Because the human armies are approaching.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“How many?”

“Thousands.”

Aldren added:

“And they are not alone.”

Kael looked toward him.

“What do you mean?”

Aldren stared toward the far end of the kingdom.

“The Night Riders.”

Mara’s expression changed.

“Veyra.”

Kael remembered the masked woman.

The woman who had told him his mother was alive.

The woman who had known what he was.

“Why would she work with the humans?”

Aldren shook his head.

“She doesn’t.”

“Then what does she want?”

Aldren’s expression became grim.

“She wants you.”

Kael looked toward the palace entrance.

“Then let her come.”

Aldren shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“The Night Riders aren’t coming to kill you.”

Aldren looked into Kael’s eyes.

“They’re coming to crown you.”

Kael frowned.

“Crown me?”

Aldren nodded.

“Veyra serves the oldest law of the Moon Clans.”

“What law?”

Aldren’s voice dropped.

“The law that says the Moon-Born must rule all wolves.”

Kael stared at the thousands of kneeling wolves.

Then he looked at the black moon.

He understood the danger.

If he accepted the crown, the packs would follow him.

The humans would see him as a threat.

The First Mother would hunt him.

The First Wolf was still somewhere inside him.

And the Night Riders wanted to make him king.

Kael looked at Mara.

“I wanted answers.”

She gave him a tired smile.

“You got them.”

“Too many.”

“That’s usually how answers work.”

Kael laughed softly.

Then a horn sounded.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The kingdom gates shook.

Someone was outside.

A voice echoed through the ancient city.

“Kael Arden!”

Mara stiffened.

Kael stepped forward.

The voice came again.

“Moon-Born!”

Kael looked toward the gate.

A figure stood beyond it.

Black cloak.

Silver mask.

Golden eyes.

Veyra.

Beside her stood Alaric, bound in chains.

Kael’s expression changed.

“Alaric.”

Veyra smiled.

“Let him go.”

Veyra shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Kael stepped forward.

“You wanted me.”

“Yes.”

“You have me.”

“Not quite.”

Veyra removed her silver mask.

Her face was calm.

“Before I release him, you must answer one question.”

Kael narrowed his eyes.

“What?”

Veyra looked toward the black moon.

“Do you know why the First Mother called you her child?”

Kael said nothing.

Veyra smiled.

“Because you are not merely descended from her.”

She pointed at Kael’s chest.

“You were created from her blood.”

Kael’s heart stopped.

Veyra continued.

“And that makes you something no wolf has ever been before.”

“What?”

Veyra’s golden eyes gleamed.

“A living god.”

The city fell silent.

Kael looked toward the black moon.

Somewhere far beyond the mountain, something enormous roared.

Then another roar answered.

And another.

The First Mother was calling.

The First Wolf was answering.

The human armies were approaching.

The Night Riders were waiting.

And thousands of wolves were kneeling before him.

Kael closed his eyes.

For sixteen years, he had believed his greatest struggle was discovering who he was.

Now he understood.

That had only been the beginning.

Because the question was no longer—

Who is Kael Arden?

The question was—

What will Kael Arden become?

He opened his eyes.

Silver light burned within them.

“Release Alaric.”

Veyra smiled.

“Why?”

Kael stepped forward.

“Because if you want me to become your king…”

The ground trembled beneath his feet.

“…you should probably stop treating my friends like prisoners.”

Veyra laughed.

“Very well.”

She snapped her fingers.

Alaric’s chains fell.

He immediately transformed.

His silver wolf form erupted forward, crossing the distance between them in seconds.

He landed beside Kael.

Veyra watched with amusement.

“Then it begins.”

Kael looked at her.

“What begins?”

Veyra turned toward the eastern tunnel.

Far away, the sound of marching armies grew louder.

She smiled.

“The War of the Blood Moon.”

The black moon above them suddenly split in two.

A beam of silver light pierced the darkness.

Every wolf in the kingdom began howling.

And beneath Kael’s feet, the ancient earth opened.

Something was rising.

Something older than the First Wolf.

Older than the Moon Mother.

Older than the First Mother.

Kael looked down.

A gigantic silver symbol appeared beneath him.

Mara stepped backward.

“Kael…”

He couldn’t answer.

A voice emerged from beneath the earth.

Not angry.

Not threatening.

Almost gentle.

My king.

Kael’s eyes widened.

The voice continued.

You have slept long enough.

The ground opened completely.

And from the darkness below, an enormous silver wolf began to rise.

Its eyes were the color of stars.

Its fur shimmered like the night sky.

And on its forehead was the same crescent mark that burned upon Kael’s chest.

Kael stared.

The creature looked at him.

Then bowed.

Every wolf in the kingdom followed.

Kael stood at the center of them all.

The Moon-Born.

The forgotten king.

The living prison.

The heir of the ancient blood.

And now—

perhaps something more.

Far above the mountain, the First Mother opened her eyes.

For the first time in thousands of years, she looked afraid.

Because she had not awakened the Moon-Born.

She had awakened his army.

And somewhere beyond the stars, another ancient presence had begun to stir.

One that even the First Mother feared.

One that remembered the first war.

One that had been waiting for the Moon-Born to return.

The war had not begun.

It had been waiting for him.

And now—

Kael was ready.
