It wasn't a creature. It was a staircase.
The solid stone wall at the rear of the clearing had fundamentally changed.
A vertical, geometric structure had emerged seamlessly from the rock face.
At first, it looked like a hairline crack. Then, the crack widened with the grinding sound of shifting tectonic plates. The stone folded inward upon itself, revealing a dark, perfectly square opening.
Beyond the threshold lay a stone staircase, descending straight down into absolute, impenetrable blackness.
Daichi's expression tightened into a hard mask. "Everyone back."
Mina stared at the impossible architecture. "That wasn't there."
"No," Daichi agreed, raising his carbine.
Hayama's voice barked through the comms. "Do not approach the threshold."
Ren looked at the descending stairs, swallowing hard. "That's definitely Level Four."
"Probably," Daichi said.
Then, the air in the clearing changed. Arata felt it hit him first. Cold. But not an ordinary, atmospheric cold. It was something deeply unnatural, a chilling wrongness that crawled across his skin and settled into his bones.
Sera shivered violently, rubbing her arms. Mochi let out a high, frightened whine from her pouch. The brilliant blue aura around Sera's armlet flickered unsteadily.
"What is that?" Arata asked.
Daichi's scanner began screaming a high-pitched warning alarm. "Miasma."
The word hung heavy in the freezing air.
Then came another sound. A tiny, frantic scratching noise. It came from behind them. Then another. Then dozens.
A swarm of gray subterranean rats erupted from the petrified roots. They poured through the cracks in the stone in a blind panic, squealing in terror.
Ren raised his hammer, stepping back. "Seriously? Now?"
But the rats didn't attack. They stopped short, their heads snapping toward the dark staircase. Then, as one massive wave, they fled in the opposite direction, disappearing into the forest. Arata stared after them, his blood running cold.
Something was coming up from below.
A harsh, metallic sound echoed slowly up the staircase.
Clink.
A pause.
Clink.
It sounded like rusted metal dragging across wet stone. Then came another, far more terrifying sound. The dry, hollow rattle of bare bones shifting against each other.
Daichi raised his carbine, sighting down the barrel. "Formation!"
The students were utterly exhausted. Their weapons were fully charged, but their muscles were trembling, their bodies still recovering from the brutal fight with the hog.
Mina stepped smoothly in front of the teenagers, drawing her weapon. "Stay behind us."
A figure stepped slowly out of the absolute darkness of the staircase.
It was a human skeleton.
The bones were blackened and petrified, clad in the rotting, ancient remnants of heavy leather armor. It carried a rusted, jagged broadsword. A second skeleton emerged silently behind it. Then a third.
The fourth to step through the portal was different. It wore the tattered shreds of an ancient robe, and it carried a long, twisted staff. The hollow sockets of its skull glowed faintly with a sickening, internal purple light.
Daichi fired.
The three-round burst struck the lead skeleton soldier squarely in the chest, shattering its ribcage, but the undead creature barely staggered. Mina fired immediately afterward, her shots tracking the second target.
The skeletal mage raised its twisted staff. A concentrated sphere of dark, necrotic energy gathered at the tip and blasted outward, striking the ground between them.
Daichi dove sideways as the earth erupted. "Keep them away from the kids!"
Mina nodded, laying down suppressing fire.
The battle dissolved into chaos. Arata could barely stand; his legs felt like lead, his muscles shaking with fatigue. Ren sat slumped against a boulder, gasping for breath, while Sera's arm trembled violently as she tried to raise her wrist.
But Daichi and Mina fought with ruthless, practiced efficiency. The lead skeleton soldier rushed them with terrifying, jerky speed. Daichi fired twice point-blank. The heavy caliber rounds shattered pieces of bone, but the creature swung its rusted sword anyway. Mina stepped in seamlessly, using the reinforced barrel of her rifle to parry the blade aside, giving Daichi the opening to fire a solid slug directly into the skull. The skeleton collapsed into a pile of dust and rusted iron.
The mage raised its staff again, dark energy gathering rapidly for a second volley.
Mina shouted over the gunfire. "Daichi!"
He looked up just as the spell launched. With a curse, Daichi violently shoved Mina aside. The necrotic blast struck Daichi squarely in the shoulder, throwing him backward. He crashed brutally against the stone wall, his armor smoking.
"Daichi!" Mina screamed, holding her ground and firing continuously at the mage. The undead spellcaster staggered under the hail of bullets.

Daichi forced himself upright, gritting his teeth against the pain. "Keep firing!"
But more skeletons were pouring from the dark stairs.
Hayama's voice crackled urgently through the transmitters. "Daichi, report!"
Daichi fired a burst into the encroaching line, glancing toward the staircase. "Portal is active! Multiple hostiles emerging!"
Hayama went completely silent. Then, his voice returned, cold and commanding: "Get the children through the portal."
Daichi froze, staring at the dark opening. "What?!"
"The structural matrix is destabilizing. The portal is closing. Get them through now!"
Arata looked past the fighting toward the staircase. He saw it. The bottom steps were silently disappearing, dissolving into thin air. The square opening of the archway itself was physically shrinking, the stone folding back in on itself.
"Get them through now!" Hayama yelled over the comms.
Mina grabbed Sera by her harness, hauling her forward. "Move!"
Ren staggered to his feet, leaning heavily on the hammer. "I can walk."
"Then walk!" Mina shoved him toward the stairs.
Arata sprinted forward. They reached the narrowing opening just as a skeleton soldier lunged from the flank.
Ren roared, swinging his hammer in a desperate backhand arc. The heavy iron smashed the skeleton aside in a shower of bone splinters. The mage appeared directly behind the shattered soldier, raising its staff for a point-blank blast.
Sera threw her arm up, her eyes wide. Blue energy exploded from the armlet. A torrential blast of high-pressure water slammed into the mage, knocking it entirely off balance.
Arata stepped in, bringing his blazing red sword down in a vicious arc that sheared straight through the ancient wooden staff. The skeleton collapsed, its purple light dying instantly.
The portal continued closing rapidly. One stone step vanished into nothingness. Then another.
"Go!" Daichi shouted, providing covering fire as more undead swarmed the clearing.
Mina pushed Sera roughly through the shrinking archway. Sera crossed the threshold, instantly swallowed by the darkness. Ren threw himself through a second later.
Arata stopped right at the edge and turned back. Daichi and Mina were still outside, holding the line against the horde. Dr. Hayama was sprinting down from the upper sector observation point, his coat flying behind him.
"Daichi!" Arata yelled, reaching out.
"Go!" Daichi roared, firing into the swarm.
Arata shook his head wildly. "We're not leaving you!"
"That is a direct order, Tagetsu!"
The stairs continued disappearing rapidly beneath Arata's boots. Another step vanished. Then another. The opening was now less than half its original size.
Hayama reached the edge of the clearing, stopping just out of reach of the closing portal. His face was entirely pale, stripped of all scientific detachment. "Arata!"
Arata looked at him through the shrinking gap. For a desperate moment, neither of them spoke.
Hayama looked past Arata, addressing all three teenagers in the dark. "Whatever happens down there..." His voice faltered briefly before he forced it steady, commanding and desperate all at once. "Come back."
Sera's voice echoed from the dark behind Arata. "We will."
Ren looked out from the shadows at his father. Hayama stared back, his chest heaving. The portal continued to grind shut.
Ren smiled, a weary, arrogant grin. "Hey, Dad.
"What?"
"You still owe me."
Hayama blinked, thoroughly confused. "For what?"
"My compensation."
"Ren, this is absolutely not the time."
"Then promise to increase my monthly pocket money."
Hayama stared at him in sheer disbelief.
Ren's grin widened. "I'll talk to you when we get back."
For one stunned second, Hayama didn't understand why Ren was talking like he was hanging up a phone. Then he realized the transmitter units clipped to their vests were still actively broadcasting. He had been hearing them perfectly. They had been hearing him perfectly.
Mina's eyes widened in sudden realization. "Wait."
Daichi glanced down at his buzzing comm unit while reloading. "The transmitters."
Sera touched the earpiece inside the dark passage. "You can still hear us?"
"Yes," Hayama's voice crackled cleanly through the line.
Ren laughed, the sound echoing in the void. "Great. Then increase my allowance."
Hayama shook his head, a mixture of exasperation and profound relief washing over him. "Ren..."
The portal shrank violently. One step disappeared. Then the last remaining step beneath them evaporated.
Mina's voice spiked with panic. "Ren, move!"
"I am moving!" Ren shouted, turning to leap further into the tunnel.
The final stone steps disappeared entirely, leaving nothing but a sheer drop. Ren's heavy boots slipped wildly on the sudden edge. He pitched forward with a yell.
"Got you!" Arata lunged, his hand locking desperately onto the heavy webbing of Ren's harness.
Sera thrust her left arm forward. A surging stream of blue water erupted from the armlet, wrapping around Ren's waist like a liquid tether. The current caught his massive weight just before he fell.
Ren slid forward onto solid ground, gasping. "That's definitely new!"
"Stop talking and move your legs!" Sera grunted, hauling on the magic tether.
Arata and Sera pulled him fully into the safe zone just as the last sliver of the archway vanished. The portal collapsed completely with a sound like a thunderclap, sealing the rock face shut.
Absolute darkness swallowed the passage.
For several long, terrifying seconds, nobody spoke. There was only the sound of three teenagers breathing heavily in the pitch black.
Then, the transmitters crackled to life. "Ren?"
It was Hayama.
Ren looked down at the blinking green light on his chest communicator. "I'm here."
He heard his father exhale sharply. Mina's voice followed immediately. "Are you all right?"
"We're alive," Sera answered, her voice shaking slightly but holding firm.
Daichi's voice cut through the static, crisp and professional. "Keep moving. Establish a perimeter."
Arata looked up and raised his sword. The radiant red glow of the blade illuminated only a few meters of the passage ahead. Sera's blue aura trembled softly around her wrist, and Ren's hammer cast a faint, violent purple light across the ground.
The world beyond the sealed portal was entirely different.
The air was bitterly, dangerously freezing. The stone beneath their boots was slick, coated in a thick, undisturbed layer of white frost. Their breath immediately plumed into the air as thick white clouds.
There were no petrified trees here. No soft loam. No trickling water. There was only seamless, freezing black stone stretching into the abyss.
Far behind them, the last physical connection to the research station had been erased. But the transmitters remained active, a fragile lifeline cutting through the dark.
"Stay together," Hayama spoke softly through the earpiece.
Arata tightened his grip on his blazing sword. "We will."
Ren looked over at Sera. Sera looked back at Arata. They stood shoulder to shoulder on the frozen stone, three colors of light cutting through the oppressive darkness.
They had entered the next level. They had no map, no backup, and no idea what nightmare was waiting for them in the freezing dark.
But for the first time since they had arrived at the mountain, they truly understood their reality. The labyrinth had stopped testing whether they possessed the courage to enter.
Now, it was testing whether they possessed the strength to survive.
Above them, the portal was gone. Below them, something massive shifted silently beneath the frozen floor.
Together, the three heroes took their first step into Level Four.
