The roar didn't just echo;
it tore through the air, vibrating in their teeth and rattling the marrow in their bones.
Sheets of rime and jagged frost rained from the cavern ceiling, shattering against the stone.
Arata's grip on his hilt went white-knuckled.
The red crystals embedded in his blade flared awake. One. Two. A dull, hungry crimson flame crawled along the steel, hissing against the absolute zero of the chamber.
Ren rolled his shoulders. The metal of his new cuirass groaned. He hoisted his war hammer, and violent violet electricity snapped like a rabid dog between the blackened crystals on its head.
Sera raised her left arm, her chest heaving. The sapphire array on her bracelet answered with a deep, pulsing abyssal blue.
Deep inside her pouch, Mochi didn't even twitch. He was buried entirely beneath the canvas.
Ren cast a grim look at the tiny bulge in the fabric. "Smart."
Arata didn't smile. He couldn't. The shadows at the edge of the cavern were moving.
Two enormous, pale-blue eyes ignited in the dark—dead, lidless, and predatory.
The creature stepped into the dim light.
Its first paw struck the stone. Crack. The bedrock of ice fractured instantly under the sheer, unnatural density of the beast.
Another step. Crack.
Arata slowly raised his sword, letting the red glow wash over the nightmare emerging from the dark.
First came the forelegs. They were grotesquely thick, bulging with roped muscle that strained beneath matted white fur. Overlapping plates of natural, jagged glacial armor erupted from its flesh, fusing across its chest, spine, and neck like a parasitic exoskeleton.
It stood nearly four meters tall. An apex predator of the frozen dark.
Its claws, each the size of a short sword, gouged deep, screaming trenches into the stone floor. Its jaws unhinged, revealing twin sabers of bone protruding from its upper gums. Viscous black saliva dripped onto the ice, bubbling and hissing like acid.
Ren's breath plumed in the freezing air. "That's… not a bear."
Sera didn't blink. "No."
Arata swallowed the copper taste of fear. "Then what do we call it?"
"How about Frostfang?" Ren muttered, eyes wide.
Sera's voice was deadpan. "Too obvious."
"You have a better name for the thing about to eat us?"
She didn't hesitate. "Cryomor."
Ren gripped his hammer tighter. "Who names monsters like that?"
"I kind of like it," Arata whispered, his eyes locked on the dripping fangs.
Ren exhaled a shaky breath. "Fine. Cryomor."
Sera nodded. "Cryomor."
Ren hoisted the sparking hammer to his shoulder. "Then let's butcher Cryomor."
The beast roared, a sound that threatened to rupture their eardrums.
The chamber exploded into motion.
"LEFT!" Arata screamed.
Cryomor lunged. A creature of that immense, crushing mass had no right to move that fast. It closed the distance in a heartbeat, a blur of white fur and jagged ice.
Arata threw himself into a desperate dive. Ren vaulted the other way, rolling over the shattered ice.
Sera stood her ground in the center. She thrust her arm forward.
A translucent, sapphire barrier erupted directly in front of her.
Cryomor slammed into it like a derailed freight train.
BOOM.
The shockwave blasted the breath from Arata's lungs. The blue barrier bowed violently inward. Sera's boots gouged twin trails into the ice as the kinetic force pushed her backward.
Her teeth ground together. "It's—heavy!"
Cryomor roared, driving its massive weight forward. Spidery fractures spiderwebbed across the blue light.
Sera's eyes widened in sheer terror. "Too heavy!"
Arata sprinted around the monster's blind flank, his boots fighting for traction. He pivoted, stepping into a brutal, two-handed swing. His flaming blade slammed into Cryomor's armored shoulder.
Hiss.
A plume of scalding steam erupted as the outer layer of ice flash-boiled. Arata's eyes lit up with hope.
Then the blade stopped dead. The shock reverberated up his arms, threatening to dislocate his shoulders. He had barely scratched the underlying plate.
"What—?"
Cryomor snapped its head toward him. The dead pale eye locked onto his soul.
The beast swiped its foreleg with blinding speed.
Arata dropped flat on his stomach. The massive claws sheared the air inches above his scalp. The sheer atmospheric pressure of the swing sent him tumbling backward, ragdolling across the jagged floor.
"HEY!"
Ren came charging like a runaway siege engine. He leaped, bringing the blackened hammer down in a devastating overhead arc directly onto Cryomor's skull.
THUNDER.
Violet lightning detonated across the creature's head. The blast illuminated the cavern in a strobe of purple light. Cryomor staggered, its massive skull dropping.
Ren landed, his eyes feral. "It works!"
Cryomor didn't fall. It snapped its head up, shaking off the high-voltage strike with a guttural snarl.
Ren's manic grin vanished. "Sort of."
The beast lunged at him, a mountain of teeth and muscle.
Ren planted his boots. "Come on!"
The collision was catastrophic. Cryomor rammed into Ren's hammer shaft. The boom echoed like a cannon blast. Ren was thrown backward, his boots carving two deep, brutal trenches through the permafrost. His muscles screamed under the strain.
"Arata!" Ren spat through clenched teeth.
Arata was already a blur of motion, flanking the beast's exposed side. "Keep it busy!"
"What does it look like I'm doing?!" Ren roared, his boots sliding back another inch.
Cryomor raised its right claw, preparing to decapitate the boy pinning its front.
Ren saw the muscles bunch. "Uh-oh."
He let go of the hammer with one hand and threw his weight backward, collapsing to the floor. The claws sheared the air where his throat had just been.
Arata struck. He drove his flaming sword at the beast's rear leg, aiming for the microscopic fissure between the grinding ice plates. The red blade bit deep.
Cryomor let out a shrieking wail.
Foul, black blood pulsed from the wound, steaming in the cold air.
Arata's eyes went cold. "It bleeds!"
"My turn," Sera shouted.
She thrust both palms out. A high-pressure geyser of water erupted from her bracelet, slamming into the stone directly beneath Cryomor's pivoting hind legs. The water flash-froze into a slick, frictionless sheet.
The beast shifted its massive weight to turn, but its rear claws found no purchase. Its hindquarters slipped out from under it.
Ren laughed, a manic, breathless sound. "Nice!"
He stepped in, swinging his hammer in a brutal, lateral arc.
CRACK.
Violet lightning shattered across Cryomor's foreleg. The beast stumbled hard, its balance entirely broken.
Arata capitalized, diving forward and slashing his superheated blade across the exact joint Ren had just struck. The glacial plate groaned, then cracked. A jagged, distinct fracture ripped down the center of the armor.
Sera pointed, her breath ragged. "There!"
"The armor," Arata gasped.
Ren spat a wad of blood onto the ice. "Then we break it."
Suddenly, Cryomor froze.
The creature's head lifted. Its tufted ears flicked. The chaotic fury of the battle was instantly replaced by an eerie, dead silence.
Arata's blood ran cold. "What is it doing?"
"I don't know," Sera whispered.
From inside the pouch, Mochi burst out. The tiny creature's ears were pinned back, and it shrieked in absolute, primal terror, pointing a tiny paw straight up.
Arata looked at the ceiling. Shadows. Nothing but shadows.
Then the shadows shifted.
"MOVE!" Arata screamed.
They scattered like shrapnel.
Cryomor hadn't just jumped; it had vaulted into the abyssal dark above them with the agility of a spider.
Ren skidded to a halt, staring upward into the pitch black. "Where the hell did it go—"
A deafening CRACK split the air. The ceiling detonated.
Cryomor plummeted from the darkness like a falling meteor.
"DOWN!"
They threw themselves flat. The beast slammed into the bedrock.
BOOM.
The shockwave was apocalyptic. The floor buckled. A geyser of pulverized ice and stone erupted outward. Arata was thrown into the air and slammed back down, the wind knocked completely out of him. Sera tumbled violently across the slick floor. Ren vanished under an avalanche of shattered frost.
Slowly, the dust settled.
Cryomor rose from the center of a newly formed crater, shaking the debris from its immaculate white coat. It was entirely unharmed.
Ren's head burst from the snow pile. He hawked up a mouthful of frost, his face bruised. "Okay," he gasped. "That's cheating."
Arata forced himself to his feet, his ribs screaming in protest. "Not cheating."
Ren glared at him. "Then what?"
"It's adapting."
Cryomor turned its head. Its pale eyes weren't just feral anymore. They were calculating. It was learning their rhythm.
"It learned," Sera breathed, her hands shaking.
Arata tightened his grip on his sword. "Change the pattern."
Cryomor charged.
This time, Arata held his ground. He didn't rush in. Watch the movement, Daichi's voice echoed in his skull. Don't watch the claws. Watch the weight.
The beast's right shoulder twitched. Its center of mass shifted microscopically.
"Right!" Arata barked.
Ren dropped. The beast's claw decapitated the air above him.
"Now!"
Ren unleashed a brutal uppercut with the hammer, smashing it squarely into the creature's exposed ribs. Violet lightning cascaded over the fur. Cryomor staggered, roaring in fury.
Arata was a ghost. He slipped under the creature's blind spot and drove his flaming blade directly into the cracked armor on its shoulder. The fissure groaned and widened, spitting steam.
Sera didn't hesitate. She fired a concentrated blast of water at the floor. Cryomor's hind legs slipped on the fresh ice, and the behemoth crashed down onto one knee.
"YES!" Ren roared, vaulting into the air.
He brought the hammer down with executioner's force. The blackened steel struck the damaged shoulder plate. The crack deepened into a gorge.
Cryomor screamed, a sound of pure agony.
Ren hit the ground, breathing hard. "We're getting through!"
Arata didn't stop moving. "Again."
"Again," Sera echoed.
They became a storm. Ren acted as the immovable anvil, drawing the beast's fury, taking grazing hits that dented his armor. Arata was the scalpel, darting in to carve away at the widening fracture. Sera was the conductor, firing bursts of water to rob the beast of its footing, throwing up micro-barriers to deflect lethal swipes.
For ten glorious seconds, they were perfect. A synchronized machine of death.
But Cryomor was an apex predator. And it was done playing.
The beast spun with whiplash speed. Its massive rear claws tore up chunks of bedrock, showering the room in deadly shrapnel.
Ren dove. Arata rolled.
Sera raised her arm, readying a barrier.
Cryomor didn't swipe. It unhinged its jaw. Deep within its throat, a pale, necrotic blue light gathered.
Sera's eyes widened in horror. "Wait."
A torrent of sub-zero mist exploded from the beast's maw.
Panic overtook logic. Sera thrust her hand forward, unleashing a tidal wave of water straight into Cryomor's face.
For half a second, the cavern was engulfed in blinding, freezing vapor.
Ren laughed, wiping frost from his eyes. "Nice shot!"
Sera lowered her arm, her face pale. "I think I got it…"
The vapor cleared.
Cryomor stood there, untouched. The water Sera had fired had flash-frozen directly onto the beast's skull and chest, forming a second, thicker, infinitely more jagged layer of glacial armor.
Sera's voice was hollow. "...I made it worse."
Ren stared at the fortified monstrosity. "How much worse?"
Cryomor rolled its shoulders. The new armor groaned, flexing with unnatural strength.
Ren lowered his hammer an inch. "Much worse."
"MOVE!" Arata screamed.
Cryomor exploded forward. It didn't aim for the boys. It became a living battering ram, slamming headfirst into a massive, frozen pillar. The column shattered, raining lethal boulders of ice across the cavern.
Arata raised his sword, deflecting a chunk of ice that would have caved in his skull. Sera threw up a desperate dome shield.
Ren just ran. A jagged boulder clipped his shoulder, sending him spinning into the dirt.
"Ow!" he snarled.
"You're wearing armor!" Sera shouted over the din.
"It still feels like a truck hit me!"
Cryomor slowly turned. The pale, dead eyes ignored Arata. They ignored Ren. They locked entirely onto Sera.
She froze.
Arata saw the shift in the beast's posture. "It knows."
"What?!" Sera yelled.
"It knows you're the anchor. It's coming for you!"
Cryomor lowered its massive head, its muscles coiling like steel springs.
Sera's grip on her magic tightened. Her eyes narrowed. "Fine. I'll hold its attention."
"No!" Arata shouted, sprinting toward her. "It'll tear you apart!"
Sera didn't look at him. "So?"
Arata stopped, staring at her back. "Sera—"
She raised her glowing arm, her face set in stone. "I'm not standing behind a barrier while you two die for me."
Ren spat a glob of blood and grinned. "Now you're talking."
Cryomor charged. The ground shook with the force of an earthquake.
Sera stood dead still.
Ten meters.
Eight.
Six.
She sparked the blue magic, letting the barrier begin to form.
Four.
Three.
Cryomor leaped, jaws unhinged, claws primed to eviscerate her.
At the last conceivable millisecond, Sera canceled the shield. She dropped to her back and slid across the frictionless ice, sliding directly beneath the airborne leviathan.
Ren's jaw dropped. "Whoa."
Sera popped up behind the beast the moment its back paws hit the ground. She slammed her palm into the floor. A concentrated geyser of water erupted directly under Cryomor's rear claws.
The beast slipped, its heavy right side crashing down.
"NOW!"
Arata was already airborne. He brought his flaming sword down like a guillotine, striking the deeply fractured armor on the left shoulder.
Crack. CRACK. SHATTER.
The fissure spiderwebbed across the entire plate.
"Move!" Ren roared, launching himself through the air.
Arata threw himself backward.
Ren swung the hammer with every ounce of kinetic force in his body. The blackened head slammed into the fractured plate.
Violet lightning detonated in a blinding flash.
The glacial plate exploded. A hurricane of razor-sharp ice fragments ripped outward.
Cryomor unleashed a sound that wasn't a roar—it was a scream.
Arata covered his face as ice shrapnel tore at his clothes. Ren was blasted backward by the concussive force. Sera threw her arms over her head.
When the freezing dust settled, they saw it.
The beast's left shoulder was stripped bare. Beneath the armor was raw, pulsing, dark-grey muscle. Thick, black blood hemorrhaged from the wound, staining the white fur and pooling on the ice.
Arata's chest he heave. "There."
Ren wiped a streak of blood from his nose. "That's the kill zone."
Sera nodded, her face pale but fierce. "Cut it deep."
Cryomor slowly dragged itself upright. Its pale blue eyes no longer held the cold calculation of a hunter. They burned with feral, unadulterated agony. And psychotic rage.
It roared, a sound that cracked the remaining icicles on the ceiling.
Inside the pouch, Mochi squealed in terror and burrowed deeper.
"Can't blame you, buddy," Ren muttered.
Cryomor charged. It was faster now. Unhinged.
"KILL IT!" Arata screamed.
They converged. Ren swung for the right side to draw its eye. Sera fired a volley at its legs. Arata dove for the exposed, bleeding flesh of the left shoulder.
But Cryomor anticipated it. In a blur of motion, it twisted its massive torso.
The right claw whipped around in a devastating backhand. It slammed into Ren's hammer. The kinetic force folded Ren in half, launching him through the air like a ragdoll. He smashed into the cavern wall with a sickening crunch.
"REN!"
"I'm—alive!" Ren coughed, slumping into the snow, unable to stand.
Arata kept his momentum, thrusting his blade at the beast.
Cryomor pivoted back, its left claw swiping in a vicious arc.
The razor-sharp talons shredded through Arata's cuirass like paper. Arata screamed as three deep, burning cuts opened across his ribs. His blood hit the ice in bright red splashes as he collapsed.
"Arata!" Sera screamed, rushing forward.
Cryomor stalked toward the fallen boy, jaws parting.
"I'm fine!" Arata choked out, clutching his side.
"You're bleeding to death!"
"I noticed!"
Cryomor raised its lethal paw to finish him.
Sera threw herself between the monster and the boy. Her bracelet flared like a dying sun. A massive, concentrated blue barrier erupted upward.
The claw slammed down.
CRACK.
The barrier buckled instantly. Sera dropped to one knee, screaming with effort as she pushed both hands upward. The sapphire crystals burned with searing heat.
"Stay back!" she shrieked.
Cryomor pressed its weight down. Crack. Crack.
Blood began to pour from Sera's nose. Her eyes grew bloodshot as the arcane pressure threatened to crush her brain.
Arata struggled to his feet, slipping on his own blood. "Sera, drop it!"
"I'm holding it!" she cried, blood staining her teeth.
The beast roared and pushed.
The barrier shattered.
The psychic and physical backlash threw Sera through the air. She hit the bedrock hard, her vision swimming as she lay motionless.
Cryomor raised its claw, turning its dead eyes back to Arata.
Arata forced his broken body upright. He let out a primal scream, his sword igniting with one final, desperate burst of red fire. He lunged, driving the blade straight into the exposed, muscular flesh of the creature's bleeding shoulder.
The blade sank to the hilt. Black blood sprayed across Arata's face.
Cryomor shrieked, thrashing violently. Its massive, armored body slammed into Arata, launching him backward. He hit the ice hard. His sword slipped from his numb fingers, clattering away. The red flames flickered, sputtered, and died.
"Arata!"
Ren came charging out of the dark, limping heavily. His armor was caved in. Blood streamed from a gash on his forehead, blinding his left eye. He gripped his cracked hammer with both hands.
"YOU'RE NOT DONE YET!"
He vaulted off a chunk of ice and drove the hammer directly into the blade wound Arata had made.
Violet lightning exploded inside the beast's flesh.
Cryomor convulsed, staggering backward, hacking up black blood. Ren raised the hammer to deliver the killing blow.
But the beast was a survivor. Its jaws snapped open.
Sera forced her head up. "REN, MOVE!"
A catastrophic blast of necrotic, sub-zero mist erupted from Cryomor's throat.
Ren threw himself sideways, but the edge of the mist caught him. The ambient temperature of the cavern plummeted instantly. Frost raced across the floor, encasing everything it touched in thick ice.
Arata's sword went completely black.
The violet electricity on Ren's hammer fizzled and died out.
The sapphire crystals on Sera's wrist went cold and dark.
The three teenagers lay scattered across the ice, gasping for breath, clutching their bleeding wounds. They stared at their weapons. For the first time since they had bonded with them, the crystals were dead.
Cryomor stepped slowly through the dissipating mist.
It didn't run. It didn't roar. It stalked.
Its left shoulder was a mangled, hemorrhaging ruin. But the beast was still standing, and its pale eyes were locked on its prey.
It knew they were broken. It knew their magic was gone.
Arata dragged himself onto one knee. Every breath felt like ground glass in his lungs. His ribs were on fire.
Ren grabbed his cracked hammer, using it as a crutch to stand.
Sera slowly wiped the blood from her nose and stood, her hands trembling.
Mochi poked his head out of the pouch, took one look at the towering, blood-soaked monster, and vanished back into the dark.
"Can't even blame him this time," Ren rasped, spitting blood.
Cryomor lowered its massive head, prowling closer.
Sera looked at Arata. Arata looked at Ren. Ren looked at the gaping, bleeding hole in the beast's armor.
They had one target. But Cryomor was favoring its left side now, keeping the ruined flesh angled away from them, protecting its vulnerability.
Arata gripped his dead, heavy sword.
He stared at the beast. Watch the movement.
Its left side was heavily damaged. It was leaning all its weight on its right. It was slower.
And something else.
Every time Cryomor shifted to step forward, its right shoulder hitched first. A micro-second of lag.
Arata's eyes narrowed into slits. The pain faded into cold, absolute focus.
"I know how we kill it."
Ren swayed on his feet. "Do what?"
"Make it expose the wound."
Sera gritted her teeth. "How?"
Arata looked at Ren. "You make it turn."
Ren let out a wet, rattling laugh. He wiped the blood from his eye. "Finally."
Arata looked at Sera. "You control where it steps."
Sera nodded, her jaw set.
"And you?" she asked.
Arata raised his unlit sword, leveling the dark steel at the monster's heart. "I'll carve it open."
Cryomor let out a final, deafening roar. The ice beneath its paws shattered as it launched itself forward for the final kill.
Ren tightened his grip on his cracked hammer.
Sera raised her trembling, dark bracelet.
Arata dropped into a low, deadly stance.
Three bleeding, exhausted teenagers.
One psychotic, wounded Frostfang.
One final play.
Cryomor accelerated, becoming a blur of white and jagged ice.
Ren stepped forward, directly into the path of the charging behemoth. He spread his arms wide, screaming into the cavern.
"Come on, you ugly bastard!"
The beast roared, its jaws snapping open.
Ren grinned through bloody teeth.
"Let's see if you can keep up."
