They crossed back into gold wheat fields that were no longer gold — the sky had curdled into a sick, static-flecked yellow-grey, and the village square, when they reached it, was empty in a way that felt less like absence and more like held breath.

The farmboy stood alone at the center of it, sword out, and Elias understood the moment he saw his face that something had gone very wrong in the days since they’d left.

“You came back,” the boy said, and his voice had layers in it now that hadn’t been there before — an echo underneath his own words, faint, wrong.Full novel: WORLD OF FICTION — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“Good. I wanted someone to see this before it happens. I didn’t want it to just be nothing, the way it was for him.”

“For who?” Mira asked, already moving into a defensive stance, knife out.

“For the one before me.” The boy’s smile had something terrible folded into it.

“I looked, after you left. Into the well. I found the ones before him, too. There’s a lot of us down there, Elias. Dozens. Maybe more. Every version of this story that got rewritten out, sitting in the dark, forgotten, waiting for someone to remember they existed even a little.” His grip on the sword tightened. “You gave the last one a moment of meaning right before he ended. I want that too. I think I’ve earned it. I think we all have.”

“What are you doing?” Priya’s voice, sharp, alarmed in a way Elias hadn’t heard from her yet.

“I’m opening the well all the way,” the boy said.

“All of them. All at once. If one dying draft answering to Elias almost broke the Blank around him — I want to know what dozens would do. Maybe it’s enough Ink, all together, to actually fix something. Maybe it’s enough to finally finish one of us properly, for real, instead of getting quietly replaced.” His eyes, when they met Elias’s, were pleading and terrifying in equal measure. “You said you cared that I existed. Prove it. Help me open it.”

“That’s not fixing anything,” Elias said, cold understanding closing over him like water.

“That’s a hundred half-erased people tearing this Canon apart trying to matter at the same time. That’s not an ending. That’s a wound.”

The ground under the well began to crack, faster this time, wider — and Priya was already moving, already shouting something about containment protocol Elias didn’t have time to process, because the boy raised his glowing sword, drove it point-first into the earth beside the well’s stone lip, and the whole square lit up gold-grey and screaming.

“Then make it hurt less,” the boy said, “or get out of my way—”

And the well tore open, all the way, all at once, and something vast and many-voiced began, at last, to climb out.
