“It’s a trap,” Priya said, unnecessary and true, as the glyph beneath them flared white-gold and the grey wasteland’s air went thick and resistant, like trying to move through wet paper.

“I didn’t know,” Toby said, horrified, already fighting the glyph’s pull with everything he had.

“Serah, this wasn’t—”Full novel: WORLD OF FICTION — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“I know it wasn’t yours,” Serah said, almost gently, “I simply let you believe your guilt was useful to me, because it was. Guilt makes people predictable, Tobias, and predictable people make excellent doors.” She turned, unhurried, to the four Errata members caught in her glyph, their Ink signatures visibly straining against a containment field none of them had trained against.

“I told you I’d prefer patience. I meant it. But your Council moved you into the field faster than I expected, and I don’t intend to wait for them to grow more careful with you.”

Dorian slammed his sword-light against the glyph’s edge and staggered back, his half-erased arm flaring pale grey with strain.

“It’s not just containment — it’s pulling, it’s trying to drain—”

“It’s harvesting,” Mira said, understanding landing hard and cold.

Elias felt it too — a slow, terrible tug at the exact place in his chest where the Ember Sovereign’s Fragment lived, like a hand reaching for something newly stitched and pulling at the thread.

He understood, in the same instant, exactly what Serah had actually built this trap for, and it wasn’t all four of them equally.

“You don’t want a hostage,” Elias said.

“You want to see what happens if you rip a fresh Fragment out of someone who’s never had one taken before.”

“I did say I preferred to understand you fully before deciding what to do with you,” Serah said, and there was, for the first time, real interest in her voice instead of patience.

“This seemed the fastest remaining way to run that experiment, once diplomacy stopped being efficient. I’m sorry it has to be unpleasant for you. I promise it will be very informative for me.”

The glyph’s pull sharpened, sudden and vicious, and Elias felt the Sequel Clause Fragment in his chest strain against something trying to tear it loose — not pain exactly, but a violation, like watching someone reach into a wound he hadn’t finished healing and pull.

Mira was already moving, knife carving uselessly at a glyph made of light rather than matter.

Dorian threw everything his half-ruined arm had left into a strike that barely dented the field’s edge.

Toby, closest to Elias, grabbed his arm and held on with both hands, as if sheer physical grip could anchor something being pulled out of him on a level none of them could touch.

“Don’t let go,” Toby said, voice breaking.

“Whatever happens, don’t let go of me, I don’t care if it doesn’t help, I am not watching this happen to you the way I watched it happen to the ones on the list before you—”

The Fragment tore loose from Elias’s chest with a sound only he could hear — not a scream, not words, something closer to a page ripping — and for one horrifying, weightless second he felt the Sequel Clause leave him entirely, felt himself go thin and unfinished in exactly the way the old Sovereign had described feeling in the well.

And then, from somewhere behind Serah, entirely unannounced, a fourth voice cut through the humming glyph — calm, ancient, and utterly furious in a way none of them had heard from anyone yet.

“You will put that back,” the voice said, “or you will learn, firsthand, exactly why the First Draft Council doesn’t send Wardens to handle Forger incursions.”
