It climbed out slow, deliberate, like it had all the time in whatever passed for a world down there, and every villager-shape in the square went still and turned to face it instead of the intruders, like dogs recognizing a bigger dog.

It wore the same homespun shirt.

Carried the same sword, except the light along its edge didn’t glow — it *guttered*, like a candle in wind that wasn’t there.Full novel: WORLD OF FICTION — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Its face was the farmboy’s face aged wrong, not older so much as *thinner*, like a copy of a copy, detail sanded away by too many redraws.

“Who—” Elias started.

“Me,” the boy said, very quietly.

“Or — the version of me from before. Before the last rewrite.” He hadn’t taken his eyes off it.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve been the Ember Sovereign. I’m not supposed to remember that, but I do, now, since things started breaking. There was a me before me. He got — he got replaced. When the story stopped being read enough to need him.”

Mira went very still beside Elias.

“Replaced how.”

“If it doesn’t get enough Ink from being read to keep believing in the old one, it just… starts over. New draft. New farmboy, new sword, new destined path, everyone forgets the old version ever existed — everyone except, apparently, whatever’s left of him. Down there.” His voice cracked fully this time.

It was something closer to grief, curdled by however many decades of narrative time alone in a dying well.

Elias felt something click into place in his chest, cold and unwelcome and familiar — because he knew exactly what an unfinished story felt like from the inside, and he had never once considered that it might feel like something from the *outside* too. The source of this chapter is g.com.

“This isn’t a monster,” he said, low, mostly to himself.

“This is what happens to a story nobody keeps reading. This is—” He stopped himself before he said *this is what almost happened to me,* because Toby was looking at him strangely already and this wasn’t the moment.

Dorian didn’t have the patience for feelings.

“Great, tragic backstory, love it, can we *leave* now—”

The old Sovereign moved before Dorian finished the sentence, faster than something that thin-looking should have been able to move, and its guttering blade caught him across the forearm before he could raise his own light in time.

Dorian didn’t scream.

He made a small, shocked sound instead, and staggered back clutching an arm that had gone the pale grey color of unprinted paper from wrist to elbow.

“It doesn’t cut,” Dorian said, staring at his own arm like it belonged to someone else.

“It *erases*—”
