In homeroom, Ms. MacElroy, a veteran teacher with a heavy smoker's rasp and absolutely zero patience for nonsense, was attempting to take the morning attendance. Georgie and I were seated right behind each other. We had strategically claimed desks in the very back row of the classroom to avoid attention.

Sheldon, naturally seated at the very front desk, had his hand raised high in the air. His arm was locked at a geometrically perfect ninety degree angle.

"Yes?" Ms. MacElroy asked. Her tired eyes narrowed sharply at the strange little boy who barely cleared the top of his wooden desk. "Sheldon, right?"

"Yes, ma'am," Sheldon said, promptly standing up from his seat.

"I am currently reviewing the official student handbook, specifically section four regarding the school dress code. I feel it is my civic duty to inform you that the girl seated in the third row is wearing a shirt that clearly exposes her collarbones, which is a direct violation. Furthermore, the boy sitting directly behind her possesses facial hair that exceeds the regulation quarter inch length."

The entire classroom fell completely dead silent. The older boy with the faint mustache glared daggers at my brother. The girl with the exposed collarbones let out a loud, offended gasp.

Ms. MacElroy blinked at him very slowly. "Sit down, Sheldon."

"But the handbook rules clearly state—"

"Sit. Down."

I groaned quietly from my seat in the back row, suddenly realizing the massive burden that had just been placed upon my shoulders.

He simply will not listen. It was glaringly obvious that I would have to spend significant time teaching my younger brother about the unwritten social rules of high school survival. Logic and reason simply did not apply to teenagers in this chaotic environment.

I had already tried to explain the basic concept of minding his own business in the hallway earlier this morning. However, Sheldon possessed a frustratingly brilliant legal mind when it came to interpreting instructions. He would inevitably find an annoying loophole to justify his actions, pointing out that I had only explicitly forbidden him from reporting tattoos.

He would completely ignore the broader context of my warning, claiming that exposing collarbones and measuring facial hair were entirely different infractions.

Dealing with his literal interpretation of every single statement was going to be an absolute nightmare. Georgie simply sat beside me and laughed quietly at my ongoing suffering, clearly enjoying my misery.

Despite his quiet amusement at the chaotic situation, Georgie still managed to shoot a look of profound disappointment toward the front of the room. He stared at the back of Sheldon's head, mentally preparing himself for a very long and embarrassing academic year. We were all going to suffer because of this kid.

By third period, Sheldon had already corrected his math teacher's complex proof right on the chalkboard. He had also aggressively questioned the historical accuracy of his history teacher's patriotic lesson regarding the Alamo. To cap off the morning, he politely informed the head librarian that her Dewey Decimal categorization system was lazy at best.

At lunch, the circular tables in the large cafeteria were fully occupied by groups, small and large, consisting of people with common interests and similar fashions. There was a continuous, echoing murmur of overlapping conversation that served as a constant white noise background.

Unless you were physically seated with a specific group, it was incredibly hard to make out what was actually being discussed at any given table. Sprinkled here and there throughout the massive room were a handful of solitary students sitting in complete isolation. Some were desperately wishing to join in with the popular kids, while the rest were perfectly happy being left entirely alone.

Much as I did before in middle school, I was seated completely alone in the noisy school cafeteria, eating my packed lunch and reading a rather thick book. It used to be a simple fantasy novel before the accident, but today I was deeply engrossed in a college level textbook on partial differential equations that I had checked out from the school library earlier.

I still found it incredibly hard to believe that someone would actually be making out between the bookshelves in the library on the very first day of school. It had been an incredibly awkward interaction when I stumbled upon them, but I still managed to grab this specific math book and check it out successfully.

I was already completely proficient with standard high school material since I had fully absorbed the memories of my past life. Therefore, I desperately needed something entirely new and challenging to get a proper feel for my newly enhanced intelligence.

Normally, an average person might consider the dense mathematical content of this college book a bit too advanced for a typical fourteen year old teenager. However, I was completely different now. To me, the heavy textbook served as excellent review material and was infinitely more interesting than any standard curriculum I would be getting in my freshman classes.

I had already decided on a plausible excuse if anyone became suspicious. I got suddenly intelligent after violently bumping my head on the wooden table. That was the exact cover story I would go with if anyone ever bothered to ask me about my sudden academic shift.

It was a genuinely fascinating experience to read this level of complex mathematics after the mysterious system perk had fundamentally altered my brain structure. The complicated numbers and intricate variables practically danced across the page, making absolute sense without requiring any strenuous effort on my part. Experiencing the world with this type of raw computational power made everyday life feel strangely beautiful and beautifully organized.

I had never possessed this profound level of intellectual capacity in either of my previous existences. In my past life, I was just an average guy navigating a normal world with a terminal illness, and this body had previously belonged to a perfectly average teenager. Now, I could process dense academic information at a speed that honestly rivaled some of the brightest minds on the entire planet.

I suddenly recalled reading articles in my previous life regarding a rare medical condition called acquired savant syndrome. Sometimes, ordinary individuals who suffered severe traumatic brain injuries would miraculously wake up with extraordinary mathematical or artistic abilities. It was a perfectly logical and scientifically documented phenomenon that I could easily use to explain away my newfound genius to any curious observers or skeptical teachers.

Despite having a solid cover story prepared, I had not yet informed my family about this massive cognitive development. I needed more time to quietly explore the vast limits of my own abilities before dragging them into this situation. It was safer to keep a low profile until I completely understood the full scope of what that mysterious gacha wheel had actually done to me.

I was obviously not going to reveal the wheel to anyone. It is always is rule number one to never tell anyone about your reincarnation and cheat.

Sheldon eventually wandered over to my isolated cafeteria table and quietly took the empty seat directly across from me. Before he could even unpack his lunch, I firmly reminded him once again that he was absolutely forbidden from snitching on any other students. He offered a small, dismissive nod of acknowledgment, seemingly accepting my strict terms for the time being.

After setting the ground rules, we both immediately returned our undivided attention to our respective reading materials. We ate our sandwiches in a comfortable, productive silence, effectively ignoring the chaotic noise of the crowded cafeteria surrounding us. It was a rare moment of peace on an otherwise stressful day, allowing me to fully absorb the complex differential equations displayed on the pages before me.

I was perfectly fine sitting alone on my desk and didn't need anyone. It's not like I couldn't fit in with others. It was a choice I made. Georgie invited me to sit with him but I declined him. Watching Georgie sitting with other kids while swallowing a bunch of grapes, something about the competition of how many you could fit inside the mouth. I was perfectly fine sitting here.

Eventually, Sheldon's natural curiosity won out, and he paused his reading to ask exactly what kind of book I was studying so intensely. I deliberately chose to ignore his probing question entirely, keeping my eyes glued firmly to the complex math textbook. I knew for a fact that engaging with him would only lead to a thoroughly exhausting and entirely unnecessary academic lecture.

Since his mind was basically a sponge for advanced science and mathematics, he most likely already knew everything contained within this specific textbook.

If I answered him, I would be forced to listen to him yap endlessly about partial derivatives and boundary conditions for the rest of the lunch period. It was much easier to just pretend I was too engrossed in my reading to hear him. It was more fun to read anyways than listening to others

Once the final school bell finally rang and we returned to the relative safety of our house, I immediately retreated to the quiet sanctuary of my bedroom. I spent the entire remainder of the late afternoon completely absorbed in the heavy college textbook. The complex mathematical theories and dense equations flowed seamlessly into my mind, locking themselves permanently into my newly enhanced memory.

My reading speed had drastically increased alongside my overall comprehension skills. By the time my mother finally called everyone downstairs for dinner, I had managed to successfully read and fully understand nearly the entire volume. The sheer amount of dense academic knowledge I had effortlessly consumed in just a few short hours was honestly starting to frighten me just a little bit.

Despite the slight unease regarding my rapid cognitive changes, I felt an undeniable surge of excitement about my future potential. I carefully placed a bookmark between the final few pages before heading out into the hallway. I was absolutely certain that I would easily finish the remaining chapters and fully master the textbook's contents right after dinner, well before my normal bedtime arrived.

Dinner that night was much quieter than usual. The lingering, heavy stress of the chaotic first day still hung over the dinner table, but the sharp edges of the tension had definitely been sanded down. Mary set a large, steaming plate of meatloaf directly in the center of the table and finally took her seat.

"Alright, everyone," she said softly, folding her hands together and bowing her head. "Grace."

Dad slumped forward slightly in his chair. He reached out his large hand without looking, fully expecting to feel the usual scratchy prickle of wool or the heavy bulk of an oven mitt.

Sheldon looked thoughtfully at his left hand, which was currently encased securely in its thick blue winter mitten. He looked up and stared directly at his father sitting across the table, successfully catching Dad's tired eye. Slowly, and with extreme deliberation, Sheldon gripped the edge of the blue cuff and pulled the protective garment completely off. He set it neatly on the wooden table right beside his dinner plate.

He reached out across the empty space. His small, entirely bare hand grasped his father's rough, calloused palm on one side, and his older brother Georgie's hand on the other.

George Senior looked down at the small, unprotected hand currently holding his own, a sudden, heavy lump quickly forming right in his throat. He squeezed the small fingers very gently.

I watched the quiet exchange from my seat and knew immediately that something significant must have happened during the private talk they had in the living room earlier this evening. Dad had somehow actually gotten through to him. I was immensely relieved to realize that my peaceful high school existence might not be completely shattered by my little brother's social shenanigans tomorrow.

Mary, her eyes shining brightly with unshed, emotional tears, smiled warmly at her family and bowed her head once more. "Lord, we thank you so much for this wonderful food, and we thank you for bringing this family together. Amen."

"Amen," Sheldon echoed very softly into the quiet dining room, silently deciding that, just for tonight, the terrifying invisible germs were absolutely worth the massive risk.
